Lactoferrin (LF) is a protein with antimicrobial activity, which is conferred in part by 2 regions contained in its N-terminal lobe. These regions have been used to develop the following synthetic peptides: lactoferricin17-30, lactoferrampin265-284, and LF chimera (a fusion of lactoferricin17-30 and lactoferrampin265-284). We have reported that these LF peptides have antibacterial activity against several pathogenic bacteria; however, the exact mechanism of action has not been established.

A novel homozygous variant in SERPINH1 associated with a severe, lethal presentation of osteogenesis imperfecta with hydranencephaly.

Gene

December 2016

Sheffield Clinical Genetics Service, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, UK; Highly Specialised Severe, Complex & Atypical OI Service, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, UK. Electronic address:

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterised by low bone mineral density resulting in fractures. 85-90% of patients with OI carry a variant in the type 1 collagen genes, COL1A1 and COL1A2, which follows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. However, within the last two decades, there have been growing number of variants identified in genes that follow an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.

The response of the adaptive immune system is usually less intense in premature neonates than term neonates. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether immunological parameters vary between preterm (PT) neonates (≥32 weeks of gestational age) and very preterm (VPT) neonates (<32 weeks of gestational age). A cross-sectional study was designed to prospectively follow PT and VPT neonates at risk of developing sepsis.

MYC-induced nuclear antigen (MINA) and preeclampsia.

Hypertens Pregnancy

May 2016

a Molecular Medicine Laboratory , Unidad Académica de Medicina Humana y Ciencias de la Salud , Zacatecas , México.

Background: Inadequate trophoblast invasion and the subsequent inflammatory response have been implicated in preeclampsia (PE) pathogenesis. Because MYC-induced nuclear antigen (MINA) gene expression is involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, inflammatory response modulation, and the unpaired regulation of which is associated with human diseases, we sought to investigate the connection between MINA and PE.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible relationship between the MINA rs4857304 variant and susceptibility to PE development as well as to estimate placental MINA gene expression and its association with PE.

Epithelial ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal of gynecological malignancies. Due to its lack of early symptoms, detection usually occurs when the tumor is no longer confined to the ovary. We previously identified Fbxw15, a gene encoding an F-box protein in the mouse ovary, and showed that its expression is developmentally regulated.

Endothelial colony-forming cells: Biological and functional abnormalities in patients with recurrent, unprovoked venous thromboembolic disease.

Thromb Res

January 2016

Unidad de Investigacion Medica en Trombosis, Hemostasia y Aterogenesis, IMSS, Gabriel Mancera 222, Col. Del Valle, CP 03100 Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Endothelial cells (ECs) play a crucial role in blood coagulation and fluid maintenance, and this study explores their abnormalities in patients with venous thromboembolic disease (VTD) where thrombophilic conditions are often absent.
  • Researchers obtained endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) from patients and controls, analyzing their characteristics, capillary formation ability, and the production of various cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
  • The results showed earlier and increased ECFC production in VTD patients, with notable differences in cytokine profiles and mitochondrial dysfunction, suggesting a dysfunctional state of ECFCs in these patients that could provide insights into VTD pathology.

Objective: Obesity before pregnancy is associated with a greater risk for the offspring to develop obesity and diabetes in childhood and adulthood. The aim of the present study was to determine the association between maternal overweight or obesity before pregnancy and newborn oxidative stress (OS).

Methods: Seventy-two mother-child pairs were divided according to the pre-gestational body mass index (BMI) of the mothers as follows: eutrophic (n = 21), overweight (n = 32), and obese (n = 19).

Methods: From June 2002 to April 2006, we conducted a prospective, observational, before-and-after study in 8 intensive care units (ICUs) from 6 hospitals in 3 cities of Mexico. The approach included administrative support, availability of supplies, education and training, reminders in the workplace, process surveillance, and performance feedback.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are considered a risk factor for Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). The current classification of MPN by the World Health Organization is based on the presence of JAK-2 V617F somatic mutation, which is present in 40 to 60% of patients with BCS. Factor V Leiden mutation is found in around 53% of patients with BCS, representing the most common prothrombotic disease associated with the disorder.

Background: In Mexico, breast cancer represents the first cause of cancer death in females. At the molecular level, non-coding RNAs and especially microRNAs have played an important role in the origin and development of this neoplasm In the Anglo-Saxon population, diverse genetic variants in microRNA genes and in their targets are associated with the development of this disease. In the Mexican population it is not known if these or other variants exist.

Departamento de Biología, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico, Federal District, Mexico

Objective: Endometriosis is linked to altered cell proliferation and stem cell markers c-kit/stem cell factor (SCF) in ectopic endometrium. Our aim was to investigate whether c-kit/SCF also plays a role in eutopic endometrium.

Design: Eutopic endometrium obtained from 35 women with endometriosis and 25 fertile eumenorrheic women was analyzed for in situ expression of SCF/c-kit, Ki67, RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase (Akt), phosphorylated RAC-alpha serine/threonin-protein kinase (pAkt), Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β), and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (pGSK3β), throughout the menstrual cycle.

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is one of the most catastrophic complications that can occur during pregnancy or in the immediate postpartum period, frequently complicated by profound shock and cardiovascular collapse as well as severe respiratory distress. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is now commonly used to improve neurological outcomes after various types of hypoxic injury and is widely used in the treatment of postanoxic injury after cardiac arrest (CA). To our knowledge, no studies have evaluated whether TH could be effectively used in AFE, and its use for this indication has not been described previously.

Objective: Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are a subset of circulating endothelial progenitor cells that are particularly abundant in umbilical cord blood. We sought to determine whether ECFC abundance in cord blood is associated with maternal body-mass index (BMI) in nonpathologic pregnancies.

Study Design: We measured the level of ECFCs in the cord blood of neonates (n = 27) born from non-obese healthy mothers with nonpathologic pregnancies and examined whether ECFC abundance correlated with maternal BMI.

Background: Asthma is a disease that has been considered mainly in children and teenagers, but due to the longer life expectancy, more elderly patients with pulmonary diseases suggestive of asthma have been detected. The diagnosis of asthma in patients over sixty years of age, becomes more complex, since there are coexistent diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, along with the difficulty for the performance of function pulmonary tests, which impact upon the adequate treatment and quality of life.

Objective: To spread and update information on the clinical usefulness of elderly asmathic patients.
