February 2021

Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia; Department of Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, School of Medicine, Universidad El Bosque, Bogota, Colombia. Electronic address:

Background: There is a critical need for studies aimed to help clinicians to establish the normal/expected central apnea-hypopnea index (CAHI) at altitudes above sea level and ages other than those reported in the current available studies. The aim of the present study was to develop predictive models useful for determining the normal/expected CAHI in children of different ages born and living at various altitudes above sea level.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed in order to identify all available studies that reported on CAHI values measured in healthy children of different ages and living at various levels above sea level.

Objectives: We aimed to validate a Spanish version of the Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder scale of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (SRBD-PSQ) in children living in a high-altitude Colombian city.

Methods: In a prospective cohort validation study, patients aged between 2 and 17 years who attended the Ear, Nose, and Throat pediatric department of our institution for symptoms related to sleep-related breathing disorders had a baseline visit at enrollment, a second visit the day scheduled for the surgical intervention, and a follow-up visit at least 3 months after the surgical intervention. In these three visits, we gathered the necessary data for assessing the criterion validity, construct validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and sensitivity to change of the Spanish version of the SRBD-PSQ.

Background: The endoscopic video capsule (EVC), a minimally invasive method of study of the gastrointestinal system indicated in occult gastrointestinal bleeding, has as main complication the retention of endoscopic capsule (CR), currently it is managed with direct extraction using double-balloon enteroscopy; however, when it fails due to its location or associated pathologies, the surgical intervention results in the most successful approach.

Objective: To evaluate clinical characteristics and management of patients with video capsule endoscopy retention.

Method: From January 2001 to December 2018, a retrospective search was carried out in three centers, of patients with CR diagnosis, clinical variables and approach were evaluated, in addition to a critical review of the literature.

Objective: Although the assessment of a bronchodilator response (BDR) is a routine and important procedure when performing lung function tests, comparisons between spirometric and oscillometric BDRs in asthmatic children living at high altitude have not been previously reported. The aim of the present study was to compare spirometric and oscillometric BDRs in children living at high altitude, and to identify independent predictors of spirometric and oscillometric BDRs.

Methods: Between January and December, 2015, asthmatic children aged between 5 and 17 years old performed impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry during the same visit before and after albuterol administration.

Dual Targeting of Stromal Cell Support and Leukemic Cell Growth by a Peptidic PKC Inhibitor Shows Effectiveness against B-ALL.

Int J Mol Sci

May 2020

Grupo de Investigación Fisiología Celular y Molecular, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá D. C. 111321, Colombia.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) favour a scenario where leukemic cells survive. The protein kinase C (PKC) is essential to confer MSC support to leukemic cells and may be responsible for the intrinsic leukemic cell growth. Here we have evaluated the capacity of a chimeric peptide (HKPS), directed against classical PKC isoforms, to inhibit leukemic cell growth.

Ex utero intrapartum treatment procedures are mainly indicated to secure the airways of fetuses featuring a risk of obstruction at birth while ensuring uteroplacental circulation. This report documents a successful intubation case with a C-MAC video laryngoscope during an ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure in a newborn featuring an infiltrative neck mass. Despite technical challenges faced in this procedure, the C-MAC video laryngoscope allowed an optimal view of airway structures.

Vomer Flap: A Golden Tool for the Treatment of Cleft Palate.

J Craniofac Surg

September 2018

Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, School of Medicine, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Fundación Hospital de la Misericordia, Bogotá, Colombia.

Despite the lack of consensus regarding the treatment of labio-palatal clefts, each treatment protocol is the expression of an individual perspective that accumulates the experience of each multidisciplinary group, which all pursue the same goal: to achieve adequate language development with the lowest possible impact on facial growth. To achieve this, a management scheme has been developed, this exploits vomer flaps for the closure of palatal clefts and limits dissections in the palatine segments. Modifications are presented in the design and dissection of vomer flaps, so as to use the largest amount of mucosal tissue available, thus facilitating closure of the different clefts, particularly in Veau Group III clefts.
