Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been considered for years the standard initial treatment for patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPC). Recently published results support the use of taxanes, second-generation antiandrogens or radiotherapy to the primary tumor as part of the treatment in these patients, considering ADT alone as suboptimal. Metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) is used as part of the treatment for oligometastatic patients in different tumor types.

Nosocomial outbreak of COVID-19 in an internal medicine ward: Probable airborne transmission.

Rev Clin Esp (Barc)

December 2022

Unidad de Enfermedades Infecciosas, Servicio de Medicina Interna, Hospital de Terrassa (Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa), Terrassa (Barcelona), Spain.

Background And Objectives: Despite the increasing evidence supporting the importance of airborne transmission in SARS-CoV-2 infection, it has not been considered relevant in the vast majority of reported nosocomial outbreaks of COVID-19. The aim of this study is to describe a nosocomial outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infection whose features suggest that aerosol transmission had an important role.

Methods: This is a descriptive analysis of a nosocomial outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infection in an internal medicine ward that occurred in December 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Some lipoprotein disorders linked to premature cardiovascular disease (PCVD) are not identified by standard lipid tests.
  • A case-control study involving 125 PCVD patients and 190 controls assessed the predictive value of serum small dense LDL cholesterol (sdLDL-C) and other lipoprotein characteristics using advanced techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
  • PCVD patients exhibited lower total LDL particles but higher levels of sdLDL-C and specific triglycerides, revealing that these factors are strong predictors of PCVD, highlighting the need for more detailed lipoprotein analysis beyond conventional profiles.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is associated with mutations in the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (), apolipoprotein B (), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 () genes. A pathological variant has not been identified in 30-70% of clinically diagnosed FH patients, and a burden of LDL cholesterol (LDL-c)-raising alleles has been hypothesized as a potential cause of hypercholesterolemia in these patients. Our aim was to study the distribution of weighted LDL-c-raising single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) scores (weighted gene scores or wGS) in a population recruited in a clinical setting in Catalonia.

The aim of this study was to examine the changes in cognitive flexibility and associated cerebral blood flow in the anterior cingulate lobe of drug-naive patients with first-episode schizophrenia who were treated with atypical antipsychotics for 6 weeks. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images were obtained from 8 healthy subjects both at rest and while performing the flexibility subtest of the TAP (Test for Attentional Performance). SPECT images were obtained in parallel from 8 first-episode drug-naive schizophrenic patients while they were performing the same task both before and after 6 weeks of neuroleptic treatment.
