[Severity of disease scoring systems and mortality after non-cardiac surgery].

Background: Mortality after surgery is frequent and severity of disease scoring systems are used for prediction. Our aim was to evaluate predictors for mortality after non-cardiac surgery.

Methods: Adult patients admitted at our surgical intensive care unit between January 2006 and July 2013 was included.

Chitosan porous 3D scaffolds embedded with resolvin D1 to improve in vivo bone healing.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect chitosan (Ch) porous 3D scaffolds embedded with resolvin D1 (RvD1), an endogenous pro-resolving lipid mediator, on bone tissue healing. These scaffolds previous developed by us have demonstrated to have immunomodulatory properties namely in the modulation of the macrophage inflammatory phenotypic profile in an in vivo model of inflammation. Herein, results obtained in an in vivo rat femoral defect model demonstrated that two months after Ch + RvD1 scaffolds implantation, an increase in new bone formation, in bone trabecular thickness, and in collagen type I and Coll I/Coll III ratio were observed.

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and constitutional delay of growth and puberty have distinct genetic architectures.

Objective: Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) represent rare and common forms of GnRH deficiency, respectively. Both CDGP and CHH present with delayed puberty, and the distinction between these two entities during early adolescence is challenging. More than 30 genes have been implicated in CHH, while the genetic basis of CDGP is poorly understood.

Review on management and outcomes of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm in women.

Vascular procedures in general, and specifically abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, are associated with worse outcomes in female patients. However, how female gender influences outcomes in the setting of aneurysm-rupture remains unclear and may be even more pronounced when compared to elective operations. In this report, the authors aim to review the literature regarding ruptured AAA repair in women.

Visceral adipose tissue and carotid intima-media thickness in HIV-infected patients undergoing cART: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in HIV-infected patients has been associated with lipodystrophy, metabolic abnormalities, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Ultrasound measures of carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) have been used as a valid measure of subclinical atherosclerosis and as a tool to predict the risk of cardiovascular events. Our aim was to evaluate the progression of cIMT in HIV-infected patients subjected to cART, with and without lipodystrophy, over a one-year period.

Background: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a life-threatening developmental anomaly, intrinsically combining severe pulmonary hypoplasia and hypertension. During development, signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) are utilized to elicit cell growth, differentiation, and survival.

Methods: We used the nitrofen-induced CDH rat model.

Endoscopic balloon dilation of Crohn's disease strictures-safety, efficacy and clinical impact.

Aim: To evaluate the incidence of anastomotic strictures after intestinal resection in Crohn's disease (CD), demonstrate long-term efficacy and safety of endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) in CD strictures and its impact on the diagnosis of subclinical postoperative endoscopic recurrence.

Methods: Retrospective single tertiary center study based on prospectively collected data between 2010 and 2015 including anastomotic and non-anastomotic strictures.

Results: 29% of 162 CD patients included developed an anastomotic stricture.

Fecal marker levels as predictors of need for endoscopic balloon dilation in Crohn's disease patients with anastomotic strictures.

Aim: To evaluate the accuracy and best cut-off value of fecal calprotectin (FC) and fecal lactoferrin (FL) to predict disease recurrence in asymptomatic patients presenting with anastomotic strictures.

Background: Massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) represent a major clinical concern, especially when degeneration and chronicity are involved, which highly compromise healing capacity.

Purpose: To study the effect of the secretome of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on tendon cells (TCs) followed by the combination of these activated TCs with an electrospun keratin-based scaffold to develop a tissue engineering strategy to improve tendon-bone interface (TBi) healing in a chronic MRCT rat model.

Intratrigonal OnabotulinumtoxinA Improves Bladder Symptoms and Quality of Life in Patients with Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis: A Pilot, Single Center, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Controlled Trial.

Purpose: We compared the efficacy and safety of trigonal injections of onabotulinumtoxinA and saline in patients with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis.

Materials And Methods: This phase II study enrolled women who had had bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis for more than 6 months and pain for 4 months or longer on a visual analogue scale of 0 to 10, which were refractory to common treatment. OnabotulinumtoxinA 100 U in 10 or saline as placebo in 9 was administered as 10 trigonal injections of 1 ml.

Postoperative Haematocrit and Outcome in Critically Ill Surgical Patients.

Introduction: Haematocrit has been studied as an outcome predictor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between low haematocrit at surgical intensive care unit admission and high disease scoring system score and early outcomes.

Material And Methods: This retrospective study included 4398 patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit between January 2006 and July 2013.

A Retrospective Analysis of the Real-Life Utilization of Ranibizumab in Patients with Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration from Portugal.

Introduction: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy has revolutionized the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration; however, it is important to monitor actual use of ranibizumab and related treatment outcomes in routine practice.

Material And Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study to monitor the 2-year outcomes following ranibizumab treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration in Portugal. Patients treated between January 2009 and December 2009 were retrospectively evaluated.

Risk factors for the occurrence of epistaxis: Prospective study.

Objective: Analyse and compare the characteristics of patients with epistaxis admitted to the otolaryngology emergency department with those provided by a control group. Establish a model to identify epistaxis predictive factors.

Methods: Prospective analysis of 283 consecutive adults, admitted to the otolaryngology emergency department of a tertiary referral centre between 25 January and 25 February 2014.

Repetitive eating questionnaire [Rep(eat)-Q]: Enlightening the concept of grazing and psychometric properties in a Portuguese sample.

Background/objective: Grazing has been associated with poor weight loss or weight regain in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery, but research remains scarce and complicated by the use of different non-validated measures. The aim of this paper is to describe the validation of the Rep(eat)-Q, a self-report measure developed to assess grazing, and investigates its relationship with BMI and psychopathology.

Subjects/methods: 1223 university students and community participants (non-clinical; Study A) and 154 pre-bariatric and 84 post-bariatric patients (Study B) completed a set of self-report measures, including the Rep(eat)-Q (worded in Portuguese), to assess disordered eating, depression, anxiety, stress and impulsivity.

Acute pediatric neck infections: Outcomes in a seven-year series.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic clues, as biochemical parameters and imaging studies, of children with acute neck infections (ANI) to identify possible independent prognostic factors leading to complications and prolonged hospitalization.

Methods: Records of children admitted to a tertiary university hospital from January 2008 to December 2014 with a diagnosis of ANIs were reviewed retrospectively. Diseases were categorized according to the site of infection and patients were divided into two groups: children (aged<10 years) and adolescents (aged 10-18 years).

Background: Massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) are very large tears that are often associated with an uncertain prognosis. Background: The prognostic value of lymphocyte infiltration (LI) of colorectal carcinoma (CC) has been demonstrated by several groups. However, no validated test is currently available for clinical practice. We previously described an automated and reproducible method for testing LI and aimed to validate it for clinical use.

Objective: Normosmic congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nCHH) is a rare disorder characterised by lack of pubertal development and infertility, due to deficient production, secretion or action of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and, unlike Kallmann syndrome, is associated with a normal sense of smell. Mutations in the gene cause autosomal recessive nCHH. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of mutations in a group of 40 patients with nCHH.

Occurrence of Anaemia in the First Year of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in a European Population-based Inception Cohort-An ECCO-EpiCom Study.

Background And Aims: Anaemia is an important complication of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anaemia and the practice of anaemia screening during the first year following diagnosis, in a European prospective population-based inception cohort.

Methods: Newly diagnosed IBD patients were included and followed prospectively for 1 year in 29 European and one Australian centre.

Portuguese Recommendations for the use of biological therapies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis- 2016 update.

Objective: To update the recommendations for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) with biological therapies, endorsed by the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology (SPR).

Methods: These treatment recommendations were formulated by Portuguese rheumatologists based on literature evidence and consensus opinion. At a national meeting the 10 recommendations were discussed and updated.
