Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze how common visual symptoms are in patients with Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and what factors might predict these symptoms.
  • - Out of 1,636 patients with GCA, 36.6% experienced visual issues, with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy being the most common complication; older age and jaw claudication were identified as risk factors for visual involvement.
  • - Conversely, conditions like polymyalgia rheumatica, fever, longer symptom duration, and higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate were associated with a lower risk of experiencing visual symptoms.

The deadliest lung lobe in COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study of elderly patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Postgrad Med

June 2022

Facultad de Medicina Universidad Miguel Hernández, Campus de San Juan de Alicante, Alicante, Spain.

Introduction: The relationship between which lung lobe is affected on the chest X-ray (CXR) performed at the Emergency Department (ED) and mortality from COVID-19 has not been studied. With this in mind, the present study aimed to discern which lung lobe was the one with the highest associated mortality rate in the elderly population.

Methods: Information was collected from the 2020 hospital admissions records of our hospital.

Introduction: Ground-glass opacity is commonly seen on radiographic imaging tests of patients admitted for COVID-19. The main objective of this study is to determine if the presence of ground-glass opacity on chest X-rays carried out at the Emergency Department correlates with significantly higher mortality. A secondary objective is to clarify which characteristics are associated with those patients who presented ground-glass opacity.

Opicapone is a catechol-O-methyl-transferase (iCOMT) inhibitor authorized in Europe in 2016 and indicated as adjunctive therapy to preparations of levodopa/ DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors in adult patients with Parkinson's disease and end-of-dose motor fluctuations who cannot be stabilised on those combinations. The efficacy of opicapone in these patients has been demonstrated in two pivotal randomized clinical trials, BIPARK I and BIPARK II, in which it has demonstrated its superiority versus placebo and non-inferiority versus entacapone. Although they constitute the gold standard for the evaluation of interventions, randomized clinical trials present limitations of external validity due to the use of strict eligibility criteria.

Incubation period of COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Rev Clin Esp (Barc)

February 2021

Departamento de Medicina Clínica, Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche, San Juan de Alicante, Spain.

Background And Objective: The incubation period of COVID-19 helps to determine the optimal duration of the quarantine and inform predictive models of incidence curves. Several emerging studies have produced varying results; this systematic review aims to provide a more accurate estimate of the incubation period of COVID-19.

Methods: For this systematic review, a literature search was conducted using Pubmed, Scopus/EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases, covering all observational and experimental studies reporting the incubation period and published from 1 January 2020 to 21 March 2020.

Objectives: To design and validate a clinical risk scale for 90-day adverse events after emergency department (ED) discharge of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

Material And Methods: Prospective, observational CoSTuM (Spanish acronym for comorbidity, symptoms, treatments, and poor heart rate control) study of patients with AF. We recorded all adverse events occurring during follow-up and used multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify variables independently associated with the occurrence of any such event.

The tibiocalcaneal bundle of the deltoid ligament - Prevalence and variations.

Foot Ankle Surg

February 2021

Department of Anatomy and Human Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain; Orthopedic Surgeon, Department of Orthopedics, Clinica Del Remei, Barcelona, Spain. Electronic address:

Introduction: A precise understanding of the anatomy of the multiple bundles of the deltoid ankle ligament might have clinical impact. The most relevant deltoid anatomical series report a variable frequency of the tibiocalcaneal ligament, possibly the most important bundle to be reconstructed in medial ankle insufficiency. Our purpose was to access the deltoid's tibiocalcaneal ligament morphology in a large anatomical study as well as to perform a historical literature review on the reasons for its variable prevalence.

The objective of our study was to standardize magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessment of spine and sacroiliac joints in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and/or inflammatory spinal pain, by creating checklists and templates based on the opinions of rheumatologists and radiologists. A scientific committee developed a series of questionnaires with multiple items regarding MRI in patients with axial inflammatory pain and/or axSpA. Then an expert panel of rheumatologists and radiologists rated all items in a 9-point Likert scale.

The Os Peroneum incidence - A cadaveric study.

Foot Ankle Surg

April 2020

Department of Orthopedics, Clinica Del Remei, Department of Anatomy and Human Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: The Os Peroneum (OP) is a small sesamoid bone, which can be found in the Peroneus Longus Tendon (PLT) sheath, near the calcaneocuboid joint. Size and shape variability is quite common as well as a multipartite OP that can be found in some cases. Trying to explore and understand this variability, this study was carried out in order to provide us with answers about the presence and shape of OP in our specimens.

Insertional anatomy of peroneal brevis and longus tendon - A cadaveric study.

Foot Ankle Surg

October 2019

Department of Orthopedics, Clinica Del Remei, Department of Anatomy and Human Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Peroneal Tendon (PT) complex is formed by the Peroneus Longus Tendon (PLT) and Peroneus Brevis Tendon (PBT), their synovial sheath, the superior and inferior retinaculum, and the Os Peroneum (OP). Their insertion is associated with some anatomic variability. Knowing these variants helps to understand the PT pathology and it may support the decision-making concerning the operative approach.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the prognostic effect of carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA125)-guided therapy (CA125 strategy) versus standard of care (SOC) after a hospitalization for acute heart failure (AHF).

Background: CA125 has emerged as a surrogate of fluid overload and inflammatory status in AHF. After an episode of AHF admission, elevated values of this marker at baseline as well as its longitudinal profile relate to adverse outcomes, making it a potential tool for treatment guiding.
