1. Whole-cell current through heteromeric NR1-NR2A and NR1-NR2B subunit combinations of NMDA channels transiently expressed in human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293) were studied using the patch-clamp technique. 2.

The mossy fiber synaptogenesis has been studied in hippocampal slice cultures. In vivo mossy fiber terminals contact the thorny excrescences of CA3 pyramidal neurons over a restricted portion, i.e.

Subcellular fractions prepared from the rat hippocampus, were assessed for the presence of trophic activities. The cytosol of synaptosomal fractions induced mitotic reinitiation of confluent 3T3 fibroblasts. The synaptosomal fraction, enriched in mossy fibre terminals, contained the highest mitotic activity.

We report in this study that, in the presence of magnesium, bath application of micromolar concentrations of glycine have prominent effects on synaptic events and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) responses in neonatal but not in adult hippocampal slices. Intracellular recordings were made from 71 rat CA3 hippocampal neurons in neonatal slices. In keeping with our earlier study, during the first postnatal week, CA3 neurons exhibited giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs).
