Eosinophilic esophagitis is an immune-mediated chronic disease of the esophagus characterized by symptoms related to esophageal dysfunction and tissue eosinophilia. In the endoscopy, the esophageal mucosa may appear normal or show exudates, rings, edema, furrows, and strictures. Its management is based on elimination diet, topical corticosteroids and/or esophageal dilation.

Brain death and organ donation in Argentine pediatric intensive care units. A multicenter study.

Brain death (BD) is a condition determined by the complete and irreversible absence of brain functions. Maintenance of vital functions creates an opportunity for organ donation. A retrospective study was carried out in 7 pediatric intensive care units of Argentina (from 1/1/2013 to 9/30/2016) to determine the incidence of clinical and certified BD, and the proportion of effective transplantations.

Children and Adolescent Hodgkin Lymphoma in Argentina: Long-term Results After Combined ABVD and Restricted Radiotherapy.

Dynamic cranial vault expansion has proved to be useful in craniofacial surgery, and its use has extended to syndromic patients. [Anaerobiosis beyond anaerobic bacteria: its role in the recovery of aerobic microorganisms from purulent samples].

The main objective of incubation in anaerobiosis is the recovery of obligate anaerobic bacteria, not excluding other microorganisms. In 2003, we conducted a comparative and prospective study from consecutive clinical samples on the recovery of aerobic microorganisms from primary cultures both in anaerobiosis and aerobiosis of the same sample. The aims were to evaluate the methodology used in anaerobiosis in the recovery of aerobic microorganisms not diagnosed in primary aerobic cultures, and to establish a relationship between them and the origin of the sample.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis in children disturbs not only mandibular growth, but also facial skeletal development. Costochondral graft was used to ensure growth, but it had proven to be unpredictable. The authors evaluate retrospectively 41 patients who underwent temporomandibular joint reconstruction during the last 10 years.

Prognostic value of soluble interleukin 2 receptor levels in Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

We investigated the prognostic significance of soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2r) levels in the pre- and post-treatment serum of paediatric patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Serum levels of sIL-2r from 32 LCH patients and 14 healthy controls were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The LCH patients were classified, evaluated and treated according to the Histiocyte Society's protocols.

Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: prognostic value of initial peripheral blast count in good responders to prednisone.

Purpose: To assess the value of initial peripheral blast count in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and prednisone good response (PGR).

Patients And Methods: From January 1990 to December 1995, 403 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed ALL were enrolled in the authors' protocol 1-ALL90-BFM/HPG. Prednisone good response was defined as a blast count of less than 1,000/microL and a prednisone poor response (PPR) as a blast count of at least 1,000/microL, both in peripheral smears, after 7 days of oral prednisone (60 mg/m2 per day) and one intrathecal dose of methotrexate.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting as acute hepatic failure in childhood.

We report a 7-year old white girl who was admitted because of acute severe hepatic failure. Her complete blood count revealed pancytopenia and a bone marrow aspiration was consistent with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Blasts cells were positive for cytoplasmic CD3 and cell surface T-associated markers.
