Brain death (BD) is a condition determined by the complete and irreversible absence of brain functions. Maintenance of vital functions creates an opportunity for organ donation. A retrospective study was carried out in 7 pediatric intensive care units of Argentina (from 1/1/2013 to 9/30/2016) to determine the incidence of clinical and certified BD, and the proportion of effective transplantations.

Citrullinemia type I is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutation of the gene expressing ASS1 argininosuccinate synthetase, limiting enzyme of the urea cycle. The classic variants are associated with neonatal/infantile forms that cause hyperammonemia leading to death if treatment is not established. Initial symptoms of disorders of the urea cycle include neurological impairment with mild or moderate liver damage.

Chemotherapy regimens and clinical support advances have improved survival in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The after-effects of treatment are a reason for concern, including damage to the immune system induced by immunosuppressive therapy which is reflected in the loss of antibody protection provided by prior immunizations. Our goal was to assess the presence of measles, rubella, and tetanus protective antibody titers among patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after completing chemotherapy.

Between September 1995 and December 2010, 99 new consecutive assessable patients with extra-cranial MGCT were treated according to SFOP/SFCE TGM95 Protocol. A "watch and wait" strategy for completely resected stage I-II was observed in cases with preoperative high tumor markers levels. Metastatic disease or alpha fetoprotein levels > 15 000 ng/ml cases were treated by VIP chemotherapy (etoposide, ifosfamide and CDDP) 4-6-courses.

Introduction: The possibility of sustaining life functions makes it difficult to distinguish between a dying patient and a patient with chances of survival, raising a dilemma for everyone around them. On the one side, continuing with life support techniques that would only extend an irreversible process and result in physical and psychological damage and harm their dignity. On the other side, withholding or withdrawing life support without an adequate reflection and diagnostic-therapeutic effort which may lead to the death of a potentially recoverable child.

Pediatricians should acquire multiple skills during their professional training, including procedural skills. Skill acquisition requires knowledge on theoretical bases, direct observation and, lastly, supervised repetitive practice. Training using simulators allows to learn procedures in a controlled setting, ensuring patients' safety, integrating this as a learning stage prior to the actual contact with patients.

Human rhinoviruses (RV) are associated with the majority of viral respiratory illnesses in infants, children and adults. Over the last several years, researchers have begun to sequence the many different species and strains of RV in order to determine if certain species were associated with increased disease severity. There are a variety of techniques employed to prepare samples for sequencing.

Background: Asthma and wheezing account for a substantial disease burden around the world. Very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 grams) infants are at an increased risk for the development of severe acute respiratory illness (ARI) and recurrent wheeze/asthma. The role of respiratory viruses in asthma predisposition in premature infants is not well understood.

Retinoblastoma remains incurable in many regions of the world. The major obstacles to cure are delayed diagnosis, poor treatment compliance, and lack of evidence-based recommendations for clinical management. Although enucleation is curative for intraocular disease, in developing countries retinoblastoma is often diagnosed after the disease has disseminated beyond the eye.

Craniosynostosis in Apert syndrome is routinely treated by wide frontal and bilateral supraorbital reshaping and posterior cranial decompression. Dynamic cranial vault expansion has proved to be useful in craniofacial surgery, and its use has extended to syndromic patients. Although a controversy remains between conventional osteotomy and application of the spring-mediated technique in surgical treatment of craniosynostosis, there have been several positive clinical reports on expansion techniques for nonsyndromic and syndromic craniosynostosis.

The main objective of incubation in anaerobiosis is the recovery of obligate anaerobic bacteria, not excluding other microorganisms. In 2003, we conducted a comparative and prospective study from consecutive clinical samples on the recovery of aerobic microorganisms from primary cultures both in anaerobiosis and aerobiosis of the same sample. The aims were to evaluate the methodology used in anaerobiosis in the recovery of aerobic microorganisms not diagnosed in primary aerobic cultures, and to establish a relationship between them and the origin of the sample.

Purpose: To assess the value of initial peripheral blast count in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and prednisone good response (PGR).
Patients And Methods: From January 1990 to December 1995, 403 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed ALL were enrolled in the authors' protocol 1-ALL90-BFM/HPG. Prednisone good response was defined as a blast count of less than 1,000/microL and a prednisone poor response (PPR) as a blast count of at least 1,000/microL, both in peripheral smears, after 7 days of oral prednisone (60 mg/m2 per day) and one intrathecal dose of methotrexate.
