Objective: The closure of patent ductus arteriosus with multiple devices has been associated with a reduction in lung perfusion. We evaluated the pulmonary perfusion after percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus with the Amplatzer Duct Occluder device using perfusion lung scan.

Methods: Thirty patients underwent successful percutaneous patent ductus arteriosus occlusions using the Amplatzer Duct Occluder device were included in this study.

Background: Treatments in patients with multidrug resistance often involve the use of multiple agents with partial antiviral activity and overlapping metabolic toxicities. Enfuvirtide is therefore a welcome addition to the antiretroviral management of patients with multiclass resistant virus, given the low risk of systemic toxicities and novel mechanism of action relative to existing drug classes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ENF plus optimized background regimen (OBR) in a Mexican cohort of highly HIV-1 ARV-experienced patients.

Introduction: In the last decades, several devices have been used for the percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus, with its own limitations and risks. The Amplatzer Duct Occluder II has been designed to overcome those limitations and reduce risks.

Objective: We described our initial series of patients who underwent percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus with the Amplatzer Duct Occluder II, emphasis on the technical aspects of the procedure.

Protumor activities of the immune response: insights in the mechanisms of immunological shift, oncotraining, and oncopromotion.

J Oncol

April 2013

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitarias (UIMEIP), Hospital de Pediatría Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Avenida Cuauhtémoc 330, Colonia Doctores, 06725 Delegación Cuauhtémoc, DF, Mexico ; Programa de Doctorado en Ciencias Quimicobiológicas del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), Mexico.

Experimental and clinical studies indicate that cells of the innate and adaptive immune system have both anti- and pro-tumor activities. This dual role of the immune system has led to a conceptual shift in the role of the immune system's regulation of cancer, in which immune-tumor cell interactions are understood as a dynamic process that comprises at least five phases: immunosurveillance, immunoselection, immunoescape, oncotraining, and oncopromotion. The tumor microenvironment shifts immune cells to perform functions more in tune with the tumor needs (oncotraining); these functions are related to chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling activities.

Oxidized low-density lipoproteins and Toll-like receptors (TLR) 2 and 4 are involved in the development of atherosclerosis. The TLR are important in the pro-inflammatory response. The aim of this research was to analyze the activation of CD14, TLR4, and TLR2 in response to minimally modified low-density lipoprotein (mmLDL).

In order to determine the accuracy of serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) as a test for biliary atresia, we reviewed the charts of 29 infants with cholestatic jaundice less than one year of age. All patients underwent liver biopsy or laparotomy with cholangiogram to establish neonatal hepatitis (NH) or extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA). We also gathered information from 176 patients from published studies.

We performed a prospective study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-dose cyclosporine A (CSA) treatment in paediatric lupus nephritis refractory to conventional therapy. Seven children with biopsy-proven Class III-IV lupus nephritis were treated with CSA (2-4 mg/kg/day) combined with low-dose prednisone for one year. All patients had failed to achieve sustained proteinuria remission with corticosteroids and cytotoxic drugs.
