Neutrophils infiltrate several types of cancer; however, whether their presence is associated with disease progression remains controversial. Here, we show that colon tumors overexpress neutrophil chemoattractants compared to healthy tissues, leading to their recruitment to the invasive margin and the central part of colon tumors. Of note, tumor-associated neutrophils expressing tumor necrosis factor α, which usually represents an antitumoral phenotype, were predominantly located in the invasive margin.

Rehabilitation on a treadmill induces plastic changes in the dendritic spines of spinal motoneurons associated with improved execution after a pharmacological injury to the motor cortex in rats.

J Chem Neuroanat

November 2022

División de Neurociencias, Centro de Investigación Biomédica de Occidente, IMSS, Guadalajara, Jal, Mexico; Laboratorio "Burgos" de Investigaciones Psicobiológicas, Zapopan, Jal, Mexico. Electronic address:

Lesions to the corticospinal tract result in several neurological symptoms and several rehabilitation protocols have proven useful in attempts to direct underlying plastic phenomena. However, the effects that such protocols may exert on the dendritic spines of motoneurons to enhance accuracy during rehabilitation are unknown. Thirty three female Sprague-Dawley adult rats were injected stereotaxically at the primary motor cerebral cortex (Fr1) with saline (CTL), or kainic acid (INJ), or kainic acid and further rehabilitation on a treadmill 16 days after lesion (INJ+RB).

Article Synopsis
  • Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures due to an imbalance in brain signaling.
  • Researchers administered Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) to rats to study its effects on neuronal activity, which led to seizures and biochemical changes in the brain.
  • Findings indicate that while certain changes in neuron structure can enhance synaptic activity, a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) may contribute to cognitive decline seen in epilepsy patients.

Human papillomavirus genotypes and P16INK4A expression in squamous penile carcinoma in Mexican patients.

BMC Infect Dis

December 2019

Molecular Oncology Laboratory, Oncology Research Unit, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, CMN S XXI IMSS, Mexico City, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • About 50% of penile carcinoma (PeCa) cases worldwide are linked to human papillomavirus (HPV), but detecting HPV alone doesn't confirm its role in causing cancer; P16INK4A is currently used as a marker for HPV-related cancer.
  • A study evaluated 60 PeCa cases in Mexico, revealing that 58.9% were HPV-DNA positive and the most common genotype was HPV16, accounting for 42.9% of cases, with some patients showing multiple genotypes.
  • The findings suggest that P16INK4A overexpression may help classify HPV-related PeCa, but more research is needed to understand the implications of multiple HPV genotypes in the cancer's development and treatment.

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Enfermedades Infecciosas y Parasitarias, Hospital de Pediatría, CMN S XXI, IMSS, México, DF.

A strong association between persistent infection, chronic inflammation and cancer has been described. Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of gastric cancer, with 900,000 new cases yearly. Helicobacter colonization triggers the gastric epithelial cells to secret IL-8, a chemoattractant of immune cells, which persistently infiltrate the infected tissue.

Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF) and Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) are important molecules in inflammatory, infectious and tumoral processes. The genes codifying these molecules are polymorphic and certain alleles have been associated with susceptibility to disease. Gastric cancer is associated with an Helicobacter pylori-induced chronic inflammatory response.

September 2009

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Enfermedades Neurológicas, Hospital de Especialidades, CMN S XXI, IMSS. Av. Cuauhtémoc 330, Col. Doctores, México D.F. C.P. 06720, Mexico.

It has been described that febrile seizures during infancy increase risk of subsequent non-febrile seizures during the adulthood. However, latency period between febrile seizure and the onset of the first spontaneous seizure has not been evaluated. The present study was designed to investigate the susceptibility to subsequent seizures in immature rats that had experienced early-life hyperthermic seizures and before they achieved the adult age.
