Importance: A clear dosing regimen for methotrexate in psoriasis is lacking, and this might lead to a suboptimal treatment. Because methotrexate is affordable and globally available, a uniform dosing regimen could potentially optimize the treatment of patients with psoriasis worldwide.

Objective: To reach international consensus among psoriasis experts on a uniform dosing regimen for treatment with methotrexate in adult and pediatric patients with psoriasis and identify potential future research topics.

A fully liquid MenACWY-CRM vaccine presentation has been developed, modifying the meningococcal serogroup A (MenA) component from lyophilized to liquid. The safety and immunogenicity of the liquid presentation at the end of the intended shelf-life (aged for 24 or 30 months) were compared to the licensed lyophilized/liquid presentation. This multicenter, randomized (1:1), observer-blind, phase 2b study (NCT03433482) enrolled adolescents and young adults (age 10-40 years).

A novel GPIHBP1 mutation related to familial chylomicronemia syndrome: A series of cases.

Atherosclerosis

April 2021

Laboratório de Biologia Molecular e Genômica, Departamento de Biologia Celular e Genética, Centro de Biociências, Universidade Federal Do Rio Grande Do Norte, Natal, RN, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - GPIHBP1 is crucial for the function of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and mutations in the GPIHBP1 gene can cause serious health issues like hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis.
  • - This study identifies a new homozygous mutation in the GPIHBP1 gene found in twelve patients from Brazil, affecting how the gene processes and leading to significant health implications.
  • - The mutation, located in a critical splicing site, results in severe hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL levels in patients, with a notable percentage having a history of acute pancreatitis, indicating a potential founder effect in this population.

Patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI) present with a wide range of disease severity and clinical manifestations, with significant functional impairment and shortened lifespan. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with galsulfase has been shown to improve clinical and biochemical parameters including patient survival, quality of life and growth. The present study is a resurvey of 34 Brazilian MPS VI patients with rapidly progressive disease (classical phenotype) who initiated ERT with galsulfase under five years of age and had been on ERT until data collection in 2019, with few exceptions (n = 4 patients who died before 2019).

Tricuspid regurgitation progression after left-sided surgery and its correlation with worse postoperative and long-term outcomes is a highly debated topic. Some studies support prophylactic tricuspid repair based on annulus dimension rather than on tricuspid regurgitation severity only, while others are in favor of a more conservative management. Furthermore, the advent of percutaneous tricuspid valve intervention and its promising short-term outcomes has introduced a new factor to be taken into account on the tricuspid intervention decision-making process.

Department of Pharmacy, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Rua General Gustavo Cordeiro de Farias s/n, Petrópolis, Natal, RN, 29012-570, Brazil.

Background: Mammographic breast density is an important predictor of breast cancer, but its measurement has limitations related to subjectivity of visual evaluation or to difficult access for automatic volumetric measurement methods. Herein, we describe the design and clinical validation of Aguida, a software program for automated quantification of breast density from flat mammography images.

Materials And Methods: The software program was developed in MatLab.

Department of Clinical Analysis, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil Department of Microbiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

A colistin-resistant Escherichia coli strain was recovered from a patient with a diabetic foot infection in Brazil. Whole-genome analysis revealed that the E. coli isolate belonged to the widespread sequence type (ST) 101 and harbored the mcr-1 gene on an IncX4 plasmid that was highly similar to mcr-1-bearing IncX4 plasmids that were recently identified in Enterobacteriaceae from food, animal, and human samples recovered on different continents.
