Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how HIV affects the severity of mpox outcomes in a large group of patients from 18 hospitals in Spain, focusing on factors like duration of illness and the presence of complications.
  • - Out of 1,823 patients with PCR-confirmed mpox, around 43% were people living with HIV, with a significant portion having uncontrolled viral loads, leading to higher rates of long or complicated mpox.
  • - The findings suggest that individuals with uncontrolled HIV are at increased risk for severe mpox complications, highlighting the need for timely HIV testing and immediate antiretroviral therapy for those diagnosed.

  • The Spanish National Polytrauma Registry (SNPR) was established in 2017 to enhance severe trauma management and assess resource use and treatment strategies in Spain.
  • An observational study collected data from 2069 trauma patients over 5 years, revealing that most were middle-aged men with a high incidence of blunt trauma, particularly from motorcycle accidents.
  • Findings suggest that early detection and treatment of thoracic injuries could significantly improve trauma care outcomes in Spain.

The effectiveness of venetoclax (VEN) in relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (RR-AML) has not been well established. This retrospective, multicenter, observational database studied the effectiveness of VEN in a cohort of 51 RR-AML patients and evaluated for predictors of response and overall survival (OS). The median age was 68 years, most were at high risk, 61% received ≥2 therapies for AML, 49% had received hypomethylating agents, and ECOG was ≥2 in 52%.

Introduction: Vortioxetine is a multimodal-acting antidepressant that provides improvements on cognitive function aside from antidepressants and anxiolytic effects. Vortioxetine has been found to be one of the most effective and best tolerated options for major depressive disorder (MDD) in head-to-head trials.

Areas Covered: The present review intends to gather the most relevant and pragmatic data of vortioxetine in MDD, specially focusing on new studies that emerged between 2015 and 2020.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) requires the iden- tification of reliable predictors of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). For this purpose, we aimed to evaluate the performance of the TNBCtype-4 classifier in a cohort of patients with TNBC treated with neoadjuvant carboplatin and docetaxel (TCb). Patients with TNBC were accrued in a nonrandomized trial of neoadjuvant carboplatin AUC 6 and docetaxel 75 mg/m for six cycles.

Background: Postoperative pulmonary and non-pulmonary complications are common problems that increase morbidity and mortality in surgical patients, even though the incidence has decreased with the increased use of protective lung ventilation strategies. Previous trials have focused on standard strategies in the intraoperative or postoperative period, but without personalizing these strategies to suit the needs of each individual patient and without considering both these periods as a global perioperative lung-protective approach. The trial presented here aims at comparing postoperative complications when using an individualized ventilatory management strategy in the intraoperative and immediate postoperative periods with those when using a standard protective ventilation strategy in patients scheduled for major abdominal surgery.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis: epidemiology, risk factors and case finding.

Int J Tuberc Lung Dis

April 2010

Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Hospital de Gran Canaria 'Dr Negrín', Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Although the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) epidemic is a very recent problem, many studies have attempted to understand it. We now have good estimates of the current burden (approximately 500 000 MDR-TB cases worldwide), and following the introduction of potential MDR-TB control strategies projections of these figures are being estimated. The projected trends in tuberculosis (TB) and MDR-TB incidence vary.
