The role of inflammation in the bile duct injury has been suggested. : Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause liver injury and a deterioration of hepatic function. The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a good predictor for poor prognosis of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United States, Egypt and Turkey. Nevertheless, the best cut-off value for the MELD score to predict mortality in the Mexican population has yet to be established.

Background: The optimal dose of rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (r-ATG) in renal transplantation is still under debate. We previously reported that a low-dose r-ATG induction of 3 mg/kg can be used safely and effectively in low-risk kidney transplants with good results in the first year after transplantation compared to basiliximab induction.
Aims: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term impact of this trial of low-dose r-ATG versus basiliximab on post-transplant outcomes (patient and graft survival, biopsy-proven acute rejection incidence [BPAR], infectious complications, and side effects).

Difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is defined by its surgical outcomes, including operative time, conversion to open surgery, bile duct and/or vascular injury. Difficult LC can be graded based on intraoperative findings. The main objective of this study is to apply and validate the reliability of their proposed risk score to predict the operative difficulty of an LC, based on their own validated intraoperative scale.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) has been recognized as a possible cause of severe COVID-19 development. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) removes cholesterol, an essential component in lipid rafts, and this cholesterol removal can regulate protein attachment to lipid rafts, modulating their functionality in the immune cell response. Although severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can alter the lipid profile, there is little information on the role of HDL-c and other lipids in prognostic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Mexican population. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of HDL-c and lipid profile on severity and survival of 102 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 first wave.

Finding an effective therapy against diseases caused by flaviviruses remains a challenge. Here, we present a protocol to test Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs that inhibit host nuclear protein import, promoting a reduction of dengue infection. We describe steps for analyzing the drug effect on nuclear import inhibition of cellular and viral proteins by confocal microscopy or western blotting.

Here we reported a case of primary sclerosing epitheloid fibrosarcoma (SEF) of the kidney, an extremely rare and aggressive tumor. The patient presented a mass in the upper part of the right kidney with pulmonary metastasis at the time of diagnosis, a right radical nephrectomy was performed, it was a solid tumor of 15 cm × 9 cm affecting almost the entire kidney. Histological study revealed a neoplasm of uniform epithelioid cells with scant cytoplasm with dense and sclerotic stroma.

Metformin (MET) and atorvastatin (ATO) are promising treatments for COVID-19. This review explores the potential of MET and ATO, commonly prescribed for diabetes and dyslipidemia, respectively, as versatile medicines against SARS-CoV-2. Due to their immunomodulatory and antiviral capabilities, as well as their cost-effectiveness and ubiquitous availability, they are highly suitable options for treating the virus.

Dengue virus (DENV) uses cellular nuclear transport machinery to import some proteins into the nucleus. Recently, the non-structural protein 3 (NS3) of DENV was localized in the nucleus of infected cells; however, its nuclear import mechanism is still unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that Ivermectin (IVM) inhibits the nuclear localization of NS3 through the inhibition of the Importin α/β1 pathway.

Objective: To evaluate the central venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide difference combined with arterial-to-venous oxygen content difference (∆Pv-aCO2/∆Ca-vO2 ratio) as a predictor of mortality in patients with COVID-19-related severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Methods: Patients admitted to the intensive care unit with severe ARDS secondary to SARS-CoV-2, and invasive mechanical ventilation were included in this single-center and retrospective cohort study performed between April 18, 2020, and January 18, 2022. The tissue perfusion indexes (lactate, central venous oxygen saturation [ScvO2], and venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide pressure difference [∆Pv-aCO2]), anaerobic metabolism index (∆Pv-aCO2/∆Ca-vO2 ratio), and severity index (Simplified Acute Physiology Score II [SAPSII]) were evaluated to determine its association with the mortality through Cox regression analysis, Kaplan-Meier curve and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.

Methods: Patients >18 years who underwent elective LC were analyzed in a single-center retrospective chart review study. Association between scores (CholeS and CLOC) with operative time and conversion to open procedures was assessed with Spearman correlation.

This editorial lists the main current theories on long COVID, such as the theory of viral persistence and the one of immunothrombosis associated with deregulation of the immune system; it is discussed as well their interrelation, which finally explains the etiopathogenesis and physiopathology of this new syndrome that afflicts the survivors of COVID-19; it is also discussed the link between viral persistence with the formation of amyloid microthrombi based on the hypothesis that the spike protein causes amyloidogenesis, inducing organic chronic damage that will characterize long COVID.

Background: Although the negative impact on fertility of men recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been suggested, there is insufficient evidence, and the data are limited and contradictory. The present prospective study aimed to evaluate the sex-related hormones, semen parameters, erectile dysfunction (ED), and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in a cohort of men who recovered from COVID-19 and age-matched control men.

Background/aim: There is increasing evidence that patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 develop neurological manifestations such as encephalitis. The purpose of this article was to present a case of viral encephalitis associated with SARS-CoV-2 in a 14-year-old child with Chiari malformation type I.
Case Report: The patient manifested frontal headache, nausea, vomiting, skin pallor, right side Babinski sign and was diagnosed with Chiari malformation type I.
