Visceral fat as the main tomographic risk factor for COVID-19 mortality.

Heart Lung

December 2024

Internal Medicina Physician, Internal Medicine Department, Unidad Medica de Alta Especialidad, Hospital de Especialidades No 1, Centro Médico Nacional del Bajío, Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos esquina Insurgentes S/N, Colonia Los Paraísos, CP 37260, León, Guanajuato, Mexico. Electronic address:

Background: Obesity is a risk factor for COVID-19 mortality; a BMI >35 increases the risk of death up to 12-fold; two previous studies have examined the association between visceral fat quantified by tomography and the risk of severe COVID-19, but not its association with mortality.

Objective: Examine whether tomographic findings differentiated data from patients who died of COVID-19 pneumonia from those who survived in a cohort of patients at a tertiary hospital.

Methods: This was a case-control study (1:1) in which we recruited data from patients at a tertiary care hospital in Mexico.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with several adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias. The severity of arterial calcifications predicts the risk of coronary heart disease and increases the risk of premature cardiovascular death. In experimental models, vitamin K1 supplementation appears to reduce coronary artery calcifications.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad Anáhuac México, Huixquilucan 52786, Mexico.

Resistance to systemic therapies in sarcomas poses a significant challenge to improving clinical outcomes. Recent research has concentrated on the tumor microenvironment's role in sarcoma progression and treatment resistance. This microenvironment comprises a variety of cell types and signaling molecules that influence tumor behavior, including proliferation, metastasis, and resistance to therapy.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO or Devic's syndrome), characterized by acute attacks of optic neuritis and transverse myelitis, is associated with antiaquaporin 4 antibodies (anti-NMO-IgG) and it has a higher prevalence in non-Caucasian populations, where multiple sclerosis is less common.

Clinical Case: 41-year-old man, with no significant personal medical history, presented with clinical symptoms including paresthesias in the right hemibody and homonymous hemianopsia in the left eye. Three weeks later, he developed lumbalgia associated with paresthesias in both lower limbs up to the T7 sensory level, as well as acute urinary retention, followed by paraplegia.

Background: Mexico is the country with the highest mortality from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), which is why guidelines have been established for early reperfusion in which fibrinolysis is the second most accessible method. However, there is a percentage of patients who do not achieve acceptable myocardial perfusion and this is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Different adenosine schemes have been used as an adjuvant to restore adequate myocardial perfusion.

Improving Automatic Coronary Stenosis Classification Using a Hybrid Metaheuristic with Diversity Control.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

División de Ciencias e Ingenierías, Universidad de Guanajuato, Campus León, Loma del Bosque 103, Col. Lomas del Campestre, León 37150, Mexico.

This study proposes a novel Hybrid Metaheuristic with explicit diversity control, aimed at finding an optimal feature subset by thoroughly exploring the search space to prevent premature convergence. : Unlike traditional evolutionary computing techniques, which only consider the best individuals in a population, the proposed strategy also considers the worst individuals under certain conditions. In consequence, feature selection frequencies tend to be more uniform, decreasing the probability of premature convergent results and local-optima solutions.

[Severe coronavirus-2 infection background for cardiovascular complications].

Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc

March 2024

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Centro Médico Nacional del Bajío, Hospital de Especialidades No. 1, División de Investigación en Salud. León, Guanajuato, México.

Article Synopsis
  • Covid-19 infections can lead to long-term cardiovascular issues, potentially due to inflammation and damage from the virus, but it's unclear if severe cases pose a higher risk.
  • A study analyzed 988 patients to compare cardiovascular complications in those with severe covid-19 versus those without, using electronic medical records for data collection.
  • Results indicated that severe covid-19 is linked to increased rehospitalization for heart-related issues like endocarditis and arrhythmias, showing a lasting negative impact on cardiovascular health.

Background: Breast cancer shows significant clinical, morphologic, and molecular variation. Telomeres are nucleoprotein complexes composed of hexanucleotide repeat DNA sequence, TTAGGG, and numerous telomere-associated proteins. The maintenance of telomere length is carried out by a ribonucleoprotein called telomerase, which consists of two main components: a catalytic subunit called hTERT (human telomerase reverse transcriptase) and an RNA template called hTR (human telomerase RNA).

In this paper, a novel strategy to perform high-dimensional feature selection using an evolutionary algorithm for the automatic classification of coronary stenosis is introduced. The method involves a feature extraction stage to form a bank of 473 features considering different types such as intensity, texture and shape. The feature selection task is carried out on a high-dimensional feature bank, where the search space is denoted by O(2n) and n=473.
