Ectopic hormone production may be present in neuroendocrine and non-endocrine neoplasms. Ectopic sources of growth hormone, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), or their releasing factors are uncommon but clinically relevant. Ectopic ACTH tumors have been studied more than the rest, but there are still no comprehensive multidisciplinary guidelines that include all the pitfalls in the diagnosis and management of ectopic hormonal syndromes and the neoplasms associated with ectopic Cushing or acromegaly.

Acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) leads to myocardial injury or necrosis, and M1 macrophages play an important role in the inflammatory response. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (BM-MSCs) are capable of modulating macrophage plasticity, principally due to their immunoregulatory capacity. In the present study, we analyzed the capacity of MSCs to modulate macrophages derived from monocytes from patients with STEMI.

Background: Early biomarkers search for Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), as genetic markers to identify vulnerable carriers of the disease even before Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) decline or microalbuminuria development, has been relevant during the last few years. The rs5186 (A116C) polymorphism of the Angiotensin II Receptor Type I gene (AGTR1), has been associated to multiple effects of renal injury risk, commonly detected in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). It has been described that rs5186 could have an effect in stability proteins that assemble Angiotensin II Receptor Type I (AT1), modifying its action, which is why it should be considered as a risk factor for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), characterized by a GFR progressive reduction.

In Latin America, asthma is a public health problem with a significant impact on both patients and health systems. The greater understanding of the pathophysiology and the recognition of the central role that inflammation has in the severity of asthma has favored the development of monoclonal antibodies that have IL-5, IL-4, IL-13 and IgE as therapeutic targets. Although these therapeutic alternatives promote better control of the disease, not all patients respond favorably to these treatments.

Pituitary tumors (PT) are highly heterogeneous neoplasms, comprising functioning and nonfunctioning lesions. Functioning PT include prolactinomas, causing amenorrhea-galactorrhea in women and sexual dysfunction in men; GH-secreting adenomas causing acromegaly-gigantism; ACTH-secreting corticotrophinomas causing Cushing disease (CD); and the rare TSH-secreting thyrotrophinomas that result in central hyperthyroidism. Nonfunctioning PT do not result in a hormonal hypersecretion syndrome and most of them are of gonadotrope differentiation; other non-functioning PT include null cell adenomas and silent ACTH-, GH- and PRL-adenomas.

Obesity is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. Based on hundreds of clinical and basic investigations, its etiopathogenesis goes beyond the simple imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. The center of the regulation of appetite and satiety lies in the nuclei of the hypothalamus where peripheral signals derived from adipose tissue (e.

The use of diagnostic tests to determine the presence or absence of a disease is essential in clinical practice. The results of a diagnostic test may correspond to numerical estimates that require quantitative reference parameters to be transferred to a dichotomous interpretation as normal or abnormal and thus implement actions for the care of a condition or disease. For example, in the diagnosis of anemia it is necessary to define a cut-off point for the hemoglobin variable and create two categories that distinguish the presence or absence of anemia.
