Analysis of B cell proliferation in response to in vitro stimulation in patients with CVID.

Allergol Immunopathol (Madr)

September 2024

Laboratorio en Inmunodeficiencias, Instituto Nacional de Pediatría SSA, Ciudad de México, México;

Article Synopsis
  • Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a disorder marked by issues in B cell functioning and antibody production, with various responses depending on whether T cells are involved.
  • A study comparing 23 CVID patients with 14 healthy donors analyzed B and T cell activity and proliferation under different stimuli, finding differing responses based on the presence of memory B cells.
  • Results indicated that patients with lower memory B cells had increased follicular T cells and poor proliferation to certain stimuli, highlighting the need for more research to uncover the underlying mechanisms and potential genetic links to CVID.

Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNET) represent the vast majority of sellar masses. Some behave aggressively, growing rapidly and invading surrounding tissues, with high rates of recurrence and resistance to therapy. Our aim was to establish patterns of genomic, transcriptomic and methylomic evolution throughout time in primary and recurrent tumors from the same patient.

Analysis of the Probiotic Potential of LB1_P46 Isolated from the Mexican Fermented Pulque Beverage: A Functional and Genomic Analysis.

Microorganisms

August 2024

Departamento de Ingeniería Celular y Biocatálisis, Instituto de Biotecnología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Cuernavaca 62210, Morelos, Mexico.

The traditional Mexican fermented beverage pulque has been considered a healthy product for treating gastrointestinal disorders. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been identified as one of the most abundant microbial groups during pulque fermentation. As traditional pulque is consumed directly from the fermentation vessel, the naturally associated LABs are ingested, reaching the consumer's small intestine alive, suggesting their potential probiotic capability.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) can be complicated by pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for corrective surgery may cause endothelial dysfunction, involving endothelin-1 (ET-1), circulating endothelial cells (CECs), and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). These markers can gauge disease severity, but their levels in children's peripheral blood still lack consensus for prognostic value.

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Nutrición, Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad (UMAE), Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Hospital de Pediatría, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Ciudad de México 06720, Mexico.

Background: The receptor activator of the nuclear factor-kB (RANK)/RANK ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) pathway is a determining pathway in the balance between bone formation and resorption, and disruptions in this complex can affect bone metabolism.

Methods: This study analyzes the changes in RANKL, OPG, and 25(OH)D levels; the RANKL/OPG ratio; and other bone turnover markers (BTMs) from diagnosis to complete remission in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This is a prospective observational cohort study, carried out at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico City, including 33 patients (4-17 years) with newly diagnosed B-cell ALL.

Following spinal cord injury (SCI), the regenerative capacity of the central nervous system (CNS) is severely limited by the failure of axonal regeneration. The regeneration of CNS axons has been shown to occur by grafting predegenerated peripheral nerves (PPNs) and to be promoted by the transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs). The introduction of a combinatorial treatment of PPNs and NPCs after SCI has to address the additional problem of glial scar formation, which prevents regenerating axons from leaving the implant and making functional connections.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases in the world and poses a significant public health challenge. Early detection and management of this metabolic disorder is crucial to prevent complications and improve outcomes. This paper aims to find core differences in male and female markers to detect T2DM by their clinic and anthropometric features, seeking out ranges in potential biomarkers identified to provide useful information as a pre-diagnostic tool whie excluding glucose-related biomarkers using machine learning (ML) models.

Background: Vulpian-Bernhardt syndrome is an atypical form of the motor neuron disease described since the 19th century. The importance of a timely diagnosis lies in the increased survival present in this variant. Due to the clinical rarity and complex diagnosis we report a clinical case of this disease, which is why we describe the typical clinical presentation, the diagnostic approach, and we make a bibliographic review of this neurodegenerative disorder as well.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cold agglutinin syndrome (CAS) is a type of hemolytic anemia caused by antibodies (mostly IgM) that work best in cold temperatures, often triggered by infections, autoimmune disorders, or cancer.
  • - A case study of a 22-year-old man showed CAS linked to reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in someone with undiagnosed HIV; he had severe anemia and related symptoms but improved after treatment.
  • - Recognizing CAS is crucial during infectious mononucleosis, as it can lead to significant health risks; early identification and supportive measures can aid recovery.

[Childhood overweight and obesity: A biomedical challenge in Mexico].

Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc

January 2024

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Hospital de Especialidades "Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda Gutiérrez", Unidad de Investigación Médica en Bioquímica. Ciudad de México, México.

In Mexico, 1 out of 3 schoolchildren aged 5 to 11 years is overweight or obese, which represents one of the main public health concerns, due to the fact that this condition in the child population is highly associated with the development of metabolic complications in adults. To date, dietary and physical activity interventions to prevent this problem have shown modest results worldwide. Biomedical studies in Mexico have shown that the pathophysiology of childhood overweight and obesity presents different molecular patterns, inflammation and oxidative stress, possibly associated with specific variants in the genome.

Introduction: The intricate relationship between obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression underscores a significant public health challenge. Obesity is strongly linked to the onset of several health conditions, including arterial hypertension (AHTN), metabolic syndrome, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia. Understanding the connection between CKD and obesity is crucial for addressing their complex interplay in public health strategies.

Background: Arterial hypertension is highly prevalent in Mexico; nevertheless, there are limited insights regarding its management during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we estimate the prevalence of clinical and treatment profiles of arterial hypertension and explore associated factors for undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension using a cross-sectional survey endorsed by the Collaborative Group on Arterial Hypertension from the Mexican Institute of Social Security.

Methods: Our survey was conducted from May to November 2021 using the May-Measurement Month 2021 protocols of the International Society of Hypertension.
