Toxicol Appl Pharmacol

September 2021

Departamento de Toxicología, Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV), Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Background: Some studies in animal models and humans suggest that exposure to lead is associated with hearing loss. Lead can reach the inner ear through the blood circulation; evidence suggests that lead could accumulate in the inner ear, causing inner ear damage.

Aim: To evaluate prestin and otolin-1 protein levels and their relationship with an increased hearing threshold in participants exposed to lead.

[Hepatotoxicity probably associated with gabapentin].

Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc

June 2021

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Hospital de Especialidades "Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda Gutiérrez", Departamento de Anestesiología. Ciudad de México, México.

Background: Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication used as an adjuvant in the treatment of neuropathic pain; few cases have been reported in which it causes acute liver injury.

Clinical Case: 56-year-old male patient with a history of chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis and narrowing of the spinal canal under treatment with gabapentin, who presented acute liver injury probably secondary to a dose of gabapentin; however, it remitted with the suspension of said drug.

Conclusion: Gabapentin lacks liver metabolism; the mechanism by which it produces liver injury is still unknown; however, there are reports of hepatotoxicity associated with its administration, so its use must be individualized for each patient.

In cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL), a dominant Th2 profile associated with disease progression has been proposed. Moreover, although the production and regulation of IL-4 expression during the early stages of the disease may have important implications in later stages, these processes are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate the presence of TOX CD4 T cells that produce IL-4 in early-stage skin lesions of CTCL patients and reveal a complex mechanism by which the NLRP3 receptor promotes a Th2 response by controlling IL-4 production.

Mexican Consensus on Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Gac Med Mex

November 2021

Servicio de Hematología, Centro Médico Nacional 20 de noviembre, Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), Ciudad de México.

Hodgkin's lymphoma is due to the clonal transformation of cells originating from B lymphocytes, generating the pathognomonic binucleate Reed-Sternberg cells. Hodgkin's lymphoma is a B cell disease with a bimodal distribution, with higher incidence in adolescence and the third decade of life, showing a second peak in people over 55 years of age. Classic Hodgkin lymphoma cells routinely undergo gene expression reprogramming, as they lose the expression of most of the typical B-cell genes and acquire the expression of multiple genes that are typical of other types of cells in the immune system.

Cannabidiol-mediated RISK PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK pathways decreasing reperfusion myocardial damage.

Pharmacol Res Perspect

August 2021

Sección de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigación, Escuela Superior de Medicina, Instituto Politecnico Nacional, Mexico City, Mexico, Mexico.

Myocardial ischemia continues to be the first cause of morbimortality in the world; the definitive treatment is reperfusion; however, this action causes additional damage to ischemic myocardial tissue; this forces to seek therapies of cardioprotection to reduce this additional damage. There are many cardioprotective agents; within these, cannabinoids have shown to have beneficial effects, mainly cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is a non psychoactive cannabinoid.

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Farmacología, Hospital de Especialidades Bernardo Sepúlveda, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico City, Mexico.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) causes memory deficit and alterations in other cognitive functions, mainly in adults over 60 years of age. As the diagnosis confirmation is performed by a postmortem neuropathological examination of the brain, this disease can be confused with other types of dementia at early stages. About 860,000 Mexicans are affected by dementia, most of them with insufficient access to adequate comprehensive health care services.

Gaucher Disease: Identification and Novel Variants in Mexican and Spanish Patients.

Arch Med Res

October 2021

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Inmunología, Hospital de Pediatría, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, IMSS, Ciudad de México, México. Electronic address:

Background: Gaucher disease (GD) is the most prevalent lysosomal storage disorder, affecting all ethnic groups, although its prevalence is higher in Ashkenazi Jewish populations. Three clinical forms of GD have been described: Type 1 non-neuronopathic, type 2 acute neuronopathic, and type 3 subacute neuronopathic. An autosomal recessive disorder is caused by variants in the human glucocerebrosidase gene (GBA; MIM*606463) located on chromosome 1q21, resulting from deficit or lack of activity of the β-glucocerebrosidase enzyme, leading to the accumulation of glucocerebroside substrate in the cells of the macrophage-monocyte system.

Among Mexican flora, nearly 300 plant species have been employed as hypoglycemic in popular use. Thus, their study entertains great relevance In this context, this work contributes a clear and timely review of the plant species utilized in Traditional Mexican Medicine and experimental biological models in which not only have the hypoglycemic properties of the extracts and the isolated compounds been considered, but also the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, taking into account an integral focus based on the complex mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis and physiopathology of DM.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income regions such as Latin America. This is because of the combination and interaction in different proportions of a high prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors and socio-economic and cultural characteristics. This reality brings about the need to change paradigms to consistently and systematically boost cardiovascular prevention as the most cost-effective medium- to long-term strategy to reduce their prevalence in medium- and low-resource countries, not only in Latin America but also in other global regions.

Introduction: Available data for biocomparable drugs are not enough to make clear decisions with respect to the potential consequences of a change for non-medical reasons in efficacy, security and inmunogenicity in patients. In the near future, options on biological treatments, biocomparable drugs, non biocomparable drugs and new chemical synthesis options will grow. Therefore, it is important to know how patients behave in persistence of treatment after a change for non-medical reasons, which already happens on a regular basis in social security institutions in Mexico.
