Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN, Km. 9.6 Libramiento Norte Carretera Irapuato León, 36824 Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disturbances to human health and economy on a global scale. Although vaccination campaigns and important advances in treatments have been developed, an early diagnosis is still crucial. While PCR is the golden standard for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 infection, rapid and low-cost techniques such as ATR-FTIR followed by multivariate analyses, where dimensions are reduced for obtaining valuable information from highly complex data sets, have been investigated.

Patterns of Muscle-Related Risk Factors for Sarcopenia in Older Mexican Women.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2022

Instituto Nacional de Geriatría, Dirección de Investigación, Av. Contreras 428, Ciudad de México 10200, Mexico.

Early detriment in the muscle mass quantity, quality, and functionality, determined by calf circumference (CC), phase angle (PA), gait time (GT), and grip strength (GSt), may be considered a risk factor for sarcopenia. Patterns derived from these parameters could timely identify an early stage of this disease. Thus, the present work aims to identify those patterns of muscle-related parameters and their association with sarcopenia in a cohort of older Mexican women with neural network analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between certain circulating microRNAs (dystromiRs and oxidative stress-related miRNAs) and muscle injury in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
  • Researchers analyzed 24 DMD patients, measuring various indicators of muscle function, metabolic parameters, and serum microRNA levels.
  • Results showed that non-ambulatory DMD patients had lower levels of these microRNAs compared to ambulatory patients, indicating that muscle injury progression correlates with decreasing expression of these miRNAs, thus enhancing our understanding of DMD's natural history.

Instituto de Investigación de Zonas Desérticas, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Altair 200, CP 78377, San Luis, S.L.P., México.

Due to its relationship with oxidative stress and inflammation responses, obesity and its cardiometabolic implications have been related with serum copper (Cu). Hence, we analyzed the association of overweight (OW) and obesity (OB) status and cardiometabolic traits with serum Cu level in Mexican schoolchildren. Anthropometrical data and cardiometabolic traits were analyzed in this cross-sectional study.

Insulinoma after sleeve gastrectomy: A case report.

World J Clin Cases

June 2022

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Enfermedades Endocrinas, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Mexico City 06720, Mexico.

Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has been proposed as an effective and durable treatment for severe obesity and glucose metabolism disorders, and its prevalence has increased from 5% to 37% since 2008. One common complication after bariatric surgery is a postprandial hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemic state. While rare, insulinomas can cause this state, where symptoms are more common in the fasting state; thus, evaluation of insulin secretion is needed.

Background: Obesity has been described as a risk factor for COVID-19 severity and mortality. Previous studies report a linear association between BMI and adverse outcomes, meanwhile in other critical illness, excessive fat tissue is related to improved survival. Whether different BMI is related with the survival of patients with severe COVID-19 deserves further analysis.

Purpura fulminans is a life-threatening disease, characterized by disseminated intravascular coagulation and endovascular thrombosis; can often occur secondary to heterogeneous etiologies, such as sepsis, and to a lesser extent, secondary to sepsis due to halophilic bacteria, such as , found in marine environments. Patients with specific comorbidities are at the highest risk of worst scenarios, without prompt treatment, infection can rapidly evolve to fatal, with a mortality rate close to 100 %. We present a case of Purpura fulminans due to septicemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied the genetic connections to blood fats using data from 1.6 million people from different backgrounds to understand why certain fats are higher or lower in the body.
  • They looked at special genes and how they interact in the liver and fat cells, finding that the liver plays a big part in controlling fat levels.
  • Two specific genes, CREBRF and RRBP1, were highlighted as important in understanding how our bodies manage fats due to strong supporting evidence.

Current medical guidelines consider pregnant women with COVID-19 to be a high-risk group. Since physiological gestation downregulates the immunological response to maintain "maternal-fetal tolerance", SARS-CoV-2 infection may constitute a potentially threatening condition to both the mother and the fetus. To establish the immune profile in pregnant COVID-19+ patients, a cross-sectional study was conducted.

The CatSper channel localizes exclusively in the flagella of sperm cells. The Catsper1 protein, together with three pore units, is essential for the CatSper Channel formation, which produces flagellum hyperactivation and confers sperm fertility. expression is dependent on Sox transcription factors, which can recognize in vitro at least three Sox binding sites on the promoter.

Hard Voting Ensemble Approach for the Detection of Type 2 Diabetes in Mexican Population with Non-Glucose Related Features.

Healthcare (Basel)

July 2022

Unidad Académica de Ingeniería Eléctrica, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Jardín Juárez 147, Centro, Zacatecas 98000, Mexico.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents one of the biggest health problems in Mexico, and it is extremely important to early detect this disease and its complications. For a noninvasive detection of T2DM, a machine learning (ML) approach that uses ensemble classification models with dichotomous output that is also fast and effective for early detection and prediction of T2D can be used. In this article, an ensemble technique by hard voting is designed and implemented using generalized linear regression (GLM), support vector machines (SVM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) for the classification of T2DM patients.
