Obturator hernias, though rare, are clinically significant abdominal hernias, predominantly affecting elderly, thin women, with an estimated prevalence of less than 1%. The primary treatment involves surgical intervention to reduce and repair the defect, either through laparotomy or laparoscopy, with bowel resection needed in up to 75% of patients. Here, we present the case of an 83-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain and a history of constipation.

Background/objectives: Reduced serum magnesium (Mg) levels have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in adults. However, in the children population, the evidence is still limited. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to analyze the association of serum Mg levels with the frequency of overweight and obesity and cardiometabolic traits in 189 schoolchildren (91 girls and 98 boys) between 6 and 12 years old from Mexico City.

Key Clinical Message: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting and deranged bone turnover. Clinicians should consider tumor-induced osteomalacia in unexplained hypophosphatemia and investigate for underlying tumors.
Abstract: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, which leads to deranged bone turnover.

Granulomas are characteristic bovine tuberculosis lesions; studying this structure has improved our understanding of tuberculosis pathogenesis. However, the immune response that develops in granulomas of young cattle naturally infected with () has not been fully studied. Our previous work described an atypical pattern in granulomatous lesions of cattle younger than 4 months (calves) naturally infected previously that did not correspond to the histological classification previously proposed.

There is still a need for safe, efficient, and low-cost coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines that can stop transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Here we evaluated a vaccine candidate based on a live recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) that expresses a stable version of the spike protein in infected cells as well as on the surface of the viral particle (AVX/COVID-12-HEXAPRO, also known as NDV-HXP-S). This vaccine candidate can be grown in embryonated eggs at a low cost, similar to influenza virus vaccines, and it can also be administered intranasally, potentially to induce mucosal immunity.

Treatment with cholecalciferol is effective for the normalization of 25(OH)D, demonstrating a beneficial effect on the calcium-tropic axis in other populations; however, its effect on the PTH/vitamin D/calcium and FGF23/klotho/phosphorus axis in RTR has not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of normalization of serum 25(OH)D concentrations on the PTH/vitamin D/calcium-FGF23/klotho/phosphorus axis in KTR treated with cholecalciferol, as well as the association between the components of this axis.

Background/objectives: Little is known about the effect of serum amylase enzymatic activity on glucose metabolism. We investigated the association of serum amylase enzymatic activity with fasting plasma glucose, insulin resistance (IR), and the plasma glucose and insulin response to an oral starch test (OST) in Mexican children.
Methods: Anthropometric data, glucose and insulin levels, and the serum enzymatic activity of total (AMYt), salivary (AMY1), and pancreatic (AMY2) amylase were analysed in 764 children (N = 427/N = 337).
Background: leptin and adiponectin are associated with cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and could be useful prognostic factors. Objectives. to explore the usefulness of the leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR) to predict the presence or worsening of dyslipidemia during 1 year of follow-up in children receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT).

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disturbances to human health and economy on a global scale. Although vaccination campaigns and important advances in treatments have been developed, an early diagnosis is still crucial. While PCR is the golden standard for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 infection, rapid and low-cost techniques such as ATR-FTIR followed by multivariate analyses, where dimensions are reduced for obtaining valuable information from highly complex data sets, have been investigated.

While several studies have previously described the levels of one-carbon metabolism-related micronutrients in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and their neonates, the results in these literature reports have been contradictory. We hypothesized that the concentrations of micronutrients involved in the one-carbon cycle are altered in pregnant women and their neonates by GDM, and that these changes could further modify the neonatal anthropometry. Micronutrient levels were measured in 123 pregnant women with normal glucose levels (M-ND) and their neonates (N-ND), as well as in 54 pregnant women with gestational diabetes (M-GDM) and their neonates (M-GDM).

Background/aim: Medication prescription is a fundamental component in the care of the elderly. Several characteristics of aging and geriatric medicine affect prescriptions for these people and make the selection of drug therapy a difficult and complex process. The objective of this study is to develop a geriatric portal for asynchronous online counseling (AGAlink) for use by physicians specializing in family medicine to reduce medication problems among older adult patients in the first level of care.

Vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were developed in record time and show excellent efficacy and effectiveness against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, currently approved vaccines cannot meet the global demand. In addition, none of the currently used vaccines is administered intranasally to potentially induce mucosal immunity.
