The Learning Incubator: an innovative teaching and learning technology in nursing.

Objective: To understand the meaning of the Learning Incubator as a teaching and learning technology in the nursing area.

Method: Qualitative research, supported by grounded theory. Data was collected from March to November 2019, through interviews with guiding questions and hypotheses directed at two different groups.

DONORS (Donation Network to Optimise Organ Recovery Study): Study protocol to evaluate the implementation of an evidence-based checklist for brain-dead potential organ donor management in intensive care units, a cluster randomised trial.

Introduction: There is an increasing demand for multi-organ donors for organ transplantation programmes. This study protocol describes the Donation Network to Optimise Organ Recovery Study, a planned cluster randomised controlled trial that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of an evidence-based, goal-directed checklist for brain-dead potential organ donor management in intensive care units (ICUs) in reducing the loss of potential donors due to cardiac arrest.

Methods And Analysis: The study will include ICUs of at least 60 Brazilian sites with an average of ≥10 annual notifications of valid potential organ donors.

Efficacy and Safety of a Biosimilar Versus Branded Enoxaparin in the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism Following Major Abdominal Surgery: A Randomized, Prospective, Single-Blinded, Multicenter Clinical Trial.

Several biosimilar versions of enoxaparin are already approved and in use globally. Analytical characterization can establish good quality control in manufacturing, but they may not assure similarity in clinical outcomes between biosimilar and branded enoxaparin. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of biosimilar Cristália versus branded Sanofi enoxaparin in venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery at risk for VTE.

Application of prognostic score IPSET-thrombosis in patients with essential thrombocythemia of a Brazilian public service.

Introduction:: In patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET), the vascular complications contribute to morbidity and mortality. To better predict the occurrence of thrombotic events, an International Prognostic Score for Thrombosis in Essential Thrombocythemia (IPSET-thrombosis) has recently been proposed. We present the application of this score and compare its results with the usual classification system.

Diabetes mellitus, metformin and head and neck cancer.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM (Diabetes Mellitus)) is directly associated with some cancers. However, studies on the association between diabetes mellitus and head and neck cancer (HNC (Head and Neck Cancer)) have rendered controversial results. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between DM and HNC, as well as the impact of metformin use on the risk of HNC.

The Bariatric Patient in the Intensive Care Unit: Pitfalls and Management.

The increasing number of bariatric/metabolic operations as important alternatives for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes brought several concerns about the intensive care of patients undergoing those procedures. Intensive Care Unit admission criteria are needed in order to better allocate resources and avoid unnecessary interventions. Furthermore, well-established protocols, helpful in many clinical situations, are not directly applicable to obese patients.

[Effects of carbon dioxide insufflation on regional cerebral oxygenation during laparoscopic surgery in children: a prospective study].

Background And Objectives: Laparoscopic surgery has become a popular surgical tool when compared to traditional open surgery. There are limited data on pediatric patients regarding whether pneumoperitoneum affects cerebral oxygenation although end-tidal CO2 concentration remains normal. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the changes of cerebral oxygen saturation using near-infrared spectroscope during laparoscopic surgery in children.

Adjuvant treatment delay in breast cancer patients.

Background: to evaluate if time between surgery and the first adjuvant treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy) in patients with breast cancer is a risk factor for lower overall survival (OS).

Method: data from a five-year retrospective cohort study of all women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at an academic oncology service were collected and analyzed.

Cognitive performance and peripheral endocannabinoid system receptor expression in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric syndrome characterized by generalized cognitive deficits that are associated with functional impairment. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulates neurotransmission and neuronal plasticity and is important for cognitive functioning. Evidence points to the involvement of this neuromodulatory system in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and that alteration of the ECS on peripheral lymphocytes could reflect central changes.

[Cervical length as a predictor of the latent period and infection in preterm premature membranes rupture].

Purpose: To verify cervical length using transvaginal ultrasonography in pregnant women between 28 and 34 weeks of gestation, correlating it with the latent period and the risk of maternal and neonatal infections.

Methods: 39 pregnant women were evaluated and divided into groups based on their cervical length, using 15, 20 and 25 mm as cut-off points. The latency periods evaluated were three and seven days.

Delayed pharyngoesophageal reconstruction with combined local and regional flaps: a case report.

We describe an unusual technique for performing delayed pharyngoesophageal reconstruction following circumferential pharyngolaryngectomy. The patient was a 52-year-old man who underwent a circumferential pharyngolaryngectomy for the treatment of hypopharyngeal carcinoma. In view of the patient's poor clinical status, we opted to perform a pharyngostomy and an esophagostomy and to postpone pharyngoesophageal reconstruction for a more appropriate occasion.

The subclavicular versus the supraclavicular route for pectoralis major myocutaneous flap: a cadaveric anatomic study.

The aim of this paper was to determine if the subclavicular route of rotation improved the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap's ability to reach head and neck sites in comparison to the traditional supraclavicular rotation. We dissected 50 flaps in 25 fresh adult male cadavers. The length of the pedicle and the flap's ability to reach five anatomical head and neck sites (laryngeal prominence of thyroid cartilage, mentum, angle of the mandible, external auditory canal, and orbit) were tested by supraclavicular and subclavicular rotation.

Right coronary bypass grafting with coronary-coronary venous bypass graft.

Objective: The following report describes the experience of the Cardiovascular Surgery Team of the ABC Medical School with coronary-coronary bypass grafting.

Methods: Four patients undergone off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, with coronary-coronary bypass of the right coronary artery, by using great saphenous vein graft.

Results: The follow-up period was 3 to 5 years without any intra- or postoperative recurrence.

Pedicled temporoparietal galeal flap for reconstruction of intraoral defects.

Objectives: In this report we aim to describe the surgical technique required to utilize the pedicled temporoparietal galeal flap for repair of selected intraoral defects and to report our experience with this type of reconstructive procedure.

Methods: The charts of 6 consecutive patients submitted to reconstruction of intraoral defects using the pedicled temporoparietal galeal flap were reviewed. All of the defects were located in the posterior oral cavity and oropharynx.

[Surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation using radiofrequency].

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of intraoperative atrial fibrillation ablation using radiofrequency during mitral valve procedure. This report describes the early and midterms results.

Methods: Between September 2003 and September 2005, 15 patients with mitral disease were operated.

Delayed histological changes in cutaneous portion of pectoralis major flaps employed in upper aero-digestive tract reconstruction.

Our aim was to determine whether histological changes occur in the cutaneous portion of pectoralis major flaps employed for upper aero-digestive tract reconstruction and, if present, to characterize these changes and try to infer their cause. Seven patients submitted to repair of aero-digestive tract defects secondary to cancer resection with pectoralis major myocutaneous flap were included in this study. All patients received adjuvant radiotherapy.

[Central inferior bisegmentectomy (S4B+S5) for gallbladder carcinoma treatment: a series of seven resectable cases].

Background: Despite its rarity, gallbladder cancer is an aggressive type of neoplasia with a very poor prognosis. The best resection for oncological purposes continues to be right hepatectomy extended to segment IV. However, bisegmentectomy IV-V is becoming an interesting alternative because of greater preservation of the parenchyma.
