In the COVID-19 scenario, patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) infected with SARS-CoV-2 may have an increased risk of death. Through a national multicenter study, we aimed to describe the impact of COVID-19 on the survival of HSCT recipients in Brazil. Eighty-six patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (92% by RT-PCR) were included.

The incidence of pediatric adrenocortical tumors (ACT) is high in southern Brazil due to the founder R337H variant. Neonatal screening/surveillance (NSS) for this variant resulted in early ACT detection and improved outcomes. The medical records of children with ACT who did not participate in newborn screening (non-NSS) were reviewed (2012-2018).

Aims: Considering that healthcare systems' financial resources are limited, we aimed to analyze the number needed to treat (NNT) and cost of preventing an event (COPE) related to drug use from Supplementary Health System (SSS) perspective.
Methods: Data from KEYNOTE-189 (NCT02578680) were considered, comparing pembrolizumab + chemotherapy to chemotherapy alone. A cost-per-responder model was developed considering the 24- and 12-month time horizons for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) endpoints, respectively.

Delleman-Oorthuys or oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome (OCCS) is an extremely rare condition which relies on three pillars of manifestations: ophthalmological, neurological, and dermatological. It was first described by Delleman and Oorthuys in 1981, and since then, very few other cases have been reported. We report the case of a 13-month-old boy, referred to an ophthalmological tertiary service for investigation of a microglobe with a cystic retrobulbar mass on translucency test.

Background: Nut consumption has been related to improvements on cardiometabolic parameters and reduction in the severity of atherosclerosis mainly in primary cardiovascular prevention. The objective of this trial is to evaluate the effects of the Brazilian Cardioprotective Diet (DIeta CArdioprotetora Brasileira, DICA Br) based on consumption of inexpensive locally accessible foods supplemented or not with mixed nuts on cardiometabolic features in patients with previous myocardial infarction (MI).
Methods: DICA-NUTS study is a national, multicenter, randomized 16-week follow-up clinical trial.
Objective: The objective of this study is to compare the clinical outcome among patients who are surgically treated for lumbar disc herniation by transforaminal and interlaminar endoscopy techniques.
Methods: For the treatment of lumbar disc herniation, 31 patients were assigned to undergo the interlaminar technique and 24 patients the transforaminal technique. They were evaluated using visual analog scale and Oswestry disability index in the preoperative period, in the first postoperative period, and in the 12th month after the procedure.

Individuals surviving cancer and brain tumors may experience growth hormone (GH) deficiency as a result of tumor growth, surgical resection and/or radiotherapy involving the hypothalamic-pituitary region. Given the pro-mitogenic and anti-apoptotic properties of GH and insulin-like growth factor-I, the safety of GH replacement in this population has raised hypothetical safety concerns that have been debated for decades. Data from multicenter studies with extended follow-up have generally not found significant associations between GH replacement and cancer recurrence or mortality from cancer among childhood cancer survivors.

Several studies have examined the complement system in schizophrenia, suggesting an involvement of the lectin pathway. We analyzed 49 patients with schizophrenia and explored the association between psychopathology of schizophrenia and complement component 3 (C3) serum levels, C-reactive protein (CRP) serum levels, ficolin activation, and mannose-binding lectin (MBL) activation. In the multiple regression analysis, a negative association was observed between the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total score and ficolin activation.

Outside of clinical trials, few studies have addressed the outcomes of Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults, especially from developing world. In this study, we conducted a multicenter analysis on the outcomes of patients aged > 15 years with Ph+ ALL, aiming to get to know an overview of the Brazilian experience as well as to explore baseline factors associated with relapse and mortality in our setting. Over these 10 years, patients were treated with diverse protocols, all of them always combined with a frontline tyrosine-kinase inhibitor.

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) with a remission-relapsing presentation and symptomatic exacerbations that have detrimental impacts on patient quality of life and are associated with a high cost burden, especially in patients with moderate-to-severe disease. The Real-world Data of Moderate-to-Severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Brazil (RISE BR) study was a noninterventional study designed to evaluate disease control, treatment patterns, disease burden and health-related quality of life in patients with moderate-to-severe active IBD. We report findings from the prospective follow-up phase of the RISE BR study in patients with active UC or CD.

This position statement was prepared to guide endocrinologists on the best approach to managing thyroid disorders during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The most frequent thyroid hormonal findings in patients with COVID-19, particularly in individuals with severe disease, are similar to those present in the non-thyroidal illness syndrome and require no intervention. Subacute thyroiditis has also been reported during COVID-19 infection.
