HLA-mismatched transplants with either in vitro depletion of CD3+ T-cell receptor (TCR)αβ/CD19 (TCRαβ) cells or in vivo T-cell depletion using posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCY) have been increasingly used for patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEIs). We performed a retrospective multicenter study via the EBMT registry on 306 children with IEIs undergoing their first transplant between 2010 and 2019 from an HLA-mismatched donor using TCRαβ (n = 167) or PTCY (n = 139). The median age for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was 1.

This study aimed to determine the onset and duration of action of 3 commercially available topical anesthetic solutions in Brazil, using the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer (Luneau, Paris, France) and to quantitatively assess patient-reported discomfort during application. A prospective, randomized, masked, and double-blind study was conducted, involving 40 eyes from 21 patients. Patients were administered each one of the topical anesthetics weekly, and corneal sensitivity was measured using the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer's corneal touch threshold (CTT).

Rapid prototyping technology, known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, and its use in the medical field are advancing. Studies on severe bone deformity treatment with 3D printing showed benefits in postoperative outcomes thanks to this technology. Even so, preoperative planning guidance for surgeons is lacking.

In 2018, Mehawej et al. described a patient with Ramon syndrome in whom a homozygous variant in ELMO2 was identified, suggesting that this gene may be the causative for this syndrome.

In this study, rapid diagnostic of multidrug-resistant (MDR) sepsis pathogens, directly from positive blood culture (BC) bottles, was evaluated by combining MALDI-TOF and the EUCAST Rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (RAST). Carbapenemase production in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates was also evaluated by RAST. From 171 positive BC bottles analyzed, 79 (46 %) MDR species, including E.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical results of cryopreserved amniotic membrane transplantation as a treatment option for refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers.
Methods: This prospective study included 11 eyes of 11 patients who underwent amniotic membrane transplantation for the treatment of refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers at Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Federal do Paraná, in the city of Curitiba, from May 2015 to July 2021. Patients underwent different surgical techniques in which the amniotic membrane was applied with the epithelium facing upward to promote corneal re-epithelialization.

Urothelial carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer (BC), accounting for approximately 90% of all cases. Evaluating the depth of tumor invasion in the bladder wall (tumor staging) is essential for determining the treatment and prognosis in patients with BC. Neoadjuvant therapy followed by radical cystectomy is the most common treatment of localized muscle-invasive BC (MIBC).

Purpose: Data on the real-life use of amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) compared with other available formulations are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of different amphotericin B (AMB) intravenously administered in the context of hospital practice for the treatment of invasive fungal infections (IFI) and to provide new insights into the profile of ABLC.
Methods: This is a multicenter, retrospective, observational study conducted at 10 tertiary Brazilian hospitals.

To date, hydroxyurea is the only effective and safe drug that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of individuals with Sickle cell disease. Twenty years of real-life experience has demonstrated that hydroxyurea reduces pain attacks, vaso-occlusive events, including acute chest syndrome, the number and duration of hospitalizations and the need for transfusion. The therapeutic success of hydroxyurea is directly linked to access to the drug, the dose used and adherence to treatment which, in part, is correlated to the availability of hydroxyurea.

The prevalence of neurological syndromes associated with antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase is increasing. While cognitive impairment is a common feature of this condition, it seldom emerges as the primary symptom. In this study, we discuss a case of refractory dementia associated with the glutamic acid decarboxylase spectrum disorder.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has been increasingly observed in children, but there is a lack of epidemiological and molecular data on CDI in Latin America. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the role of CDI in children with diarrhea. It included 105 children with antimicrobial-associated diarrhea (AAD) and analyzed the molecular characteristics of strains isolated from two hospitals in southern Brazil between 2017 and 2020.

Objective: to measure urinary volume through bladder ultrasound, performed by a nurse in critically ill patients, after removal of the indwelling urinary catheter and to verify the related factors on urinary retention.
Method: quantitative, observational and cross-sectional study, carried out with 37 critically ill patients of both sexes, over 18 years of age, with removal of indwelling urinary catheter in the last 48 hours. A questionnaire containing sociodemographic and clinical variables and an ultrasound examination were used.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important goal of therapy for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS); however, little is known about HRQoL of these patients at clinical presentation. We report HRQoL profile of newly diagnosed patients with MDS across both the the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) and IPSS-Revised (IPSS-R) classifications, stratified by sex and age group categories, aiming to also establish European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) reference values for these patients. Analysis was based on 927 patients with a median age of 73.

Objectives: Intronic GAA repeat expansions have recently been found to be a common cause of hereditary ataxia (GAA- ataxia; SCA27B). The global epidemiology and regional prevalence of this newly reported disorder remain to be established. In this study, we investigated the frequency of GAA- ataxia in a large cohort of Brazilian patients with unsolved adult-onset ataxia.

Context: Subtle cognitive impairments have been described in children with congenital hypothyroidism (CH) detected by neonatal screening (NS), even with early and adequate treatment. Patients with CH may present with brain cortical thickness (CT) abnormalities, which may be associated with neurocognitive impairments.
Objective: This work aimed to evaluate the CT in adolescents with CH detected by the NS Program (Paraná, Brazil), and to correlate possible abnormalities with cognitive level and variables of neurocognitive prognosis.
