The use of serious games as an innovative educational strategy for learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation: an integrative review.

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence available in literature on the use of serious games for health students to learn about cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Methods: Integrative review in PubMed / MEDLINE®, LILACS, Scopus and CINAHL databases. Included primary studies, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, from January 2009 to August 2019.

Pubertal development and adult height in patients with congenital hypothyroidism detected by neonatal screening in southern Brazil.

Objectives Adequate treatment of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is required for normal growth and sexual development. To evaluate pubertal development in patients with permanent CH detected by a statewide Neonatal Screening Program of Paraná and, secondly, to evaluate adult height (AH) in a subgroup of patients. Methods Clinical, laboratory, and auxological data obtained from medical records of 174 patients (123 girls).

Sarcopenia as an early complication of patients with head and neck cancer with dysphagia.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between dysphagia and sarcopenia in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC).

Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective study, sample by convenience, including men with HNC during their initial oncologic evaluation. Patients answered questionnaires (demographic data, lifestyle habits, disease characteristics and the Short International Physical Activity Questionnaire).

Individual sensitivity to growth hormone replacement in adults.

The metabolic actions of growth hormone (GH) last a lifetime and involve several physiological functions associated with the control of body composition, energy metabolism, water regulation, immune response, cardiovascular performance, physical and mental work. Adult patients with GH deficiency (GHD) present a constellation of clinical findings, which include increased total and visceral body fat, low bone and muscle mass, reduced muscle strength, impaired anaerobic physical capacity, unfavorable cardiovascular profile, and poor quality of life. Recombinant human GH (rhGH) therapy has been proved to reverse or improve many abnormalities associated with GHD in adult life, but the therapeutic response is highly variable among patients and influenced by multiple factors, which are the main focus of this narrative review.

Strongyloides-specific IgA, IgG and IgG immune complex profile in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Aims: To describe an anti-Strongyloides IgA, IgG and IgG immune complex antibody response profile in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Methods And Results: Saliva and serum samples were collected from 100 individuals: group I, 50 apparently healthy individuals; and group II, 50 pulmonary tuberculosis patients. The IgA, IgG and IgG immune complex detection were carried out via an ELISA immunoenzymatic test.

Aloysio de Castro (1881-1959) is now remembered as one of Brazil's greatest physicians and is considered the father of Brazilian neurological semiology. However, his interests went far beyond the realm of Medicine, and he became one of the most illustrious intellectuals of his time. In 1927, he gave a speech at the São Paulo Society of Artistic Culture on Frédéric Chopin and embarked on a journey across the composer's life and times, discussing the medical issues involving his death, as well as his lovers, his compositions, and the spiritual aspects of musical interpretation.

Open abdomen management for severe peritonitis in elderly. Results from the prospective International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA): Cohort study.

Background: Analyzing the data of the International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA), the feasibility of open abdomen treatment has been demonstrated at every age. This new analysis on the IROA database investigates the risk factors for mortality in elderly patients treated with open abdomen for intra-abdominal infection.

Methods: Data were derived from the IROA, a prospective observational international cohort study that enrolled patients treated with open abdomen worldwide.

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Children and Adolescents with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Brazil: A Multicentric Retrospective Study.

The survival rates of children with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) range from 60% to 70% in high-income countries. The corresponding rate for Brazilian children with AML who undergo HSCT is unknown. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 114 children with AML who underwent HSCT between 2008 and 2012 at institutions participating in the Brazilian Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Working Group.

Multivariate quasi-beta regression models for continuous bounded data.

We propose a multivariate regression model to deal with multiple continuous bounded data. The proposed model is based on second-moment assumptions, only. We adopted the quasi-score and Pearson estimating functions for estimation of the regression and dispersion parameters, respectively.

Facial Nerve Palsy Complicated by Masked Tuberculous Mastoiditis in a Recently Transplanted Patient.

Mastoiditis is a complication of the medium otitis characterized by suppuration and destruction of the mastoid cells and the pyramid petrosa; its tuberculous etiology has decreased in the last 40 years. Paralysis resulting from mastoiditis is more common in children. The incidence of mastoiditis has risen, although there are no reports in the literature associated with renal transplants.

Outcomes after Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplantation with Post-Transplantation Cyclophosphamide in Patients with Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) can cure primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID). When a HLA-matched donor is not available, a haploidentical family donor may be considered. The use of T cell-replete haploidentical HCT with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (haplo-PTCy) in children with PID has been reported in few case series.

Trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone mineral density in patients with long-term therapy with warfarin.

Unlabelled: In this study, we compared patients using the anticoagulant warfarin for more than a year with a control group with similar characteristics but without using the drug. We demonstrated worse BMD and bone quality by trabecular bone score (TBS) in patients using warfarin for more than 1 year.

Purpose: Evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD) and the trabecular bone score (TBS) of patients taking warfarin for more than 1 year compared with a control group.

Target-based approach for osteoarthritis treatment.

There is still no definitive treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA). We are certainly far from a consensus on the best form of treatment or on an effective treatment recommendation. There are reasons for the current equivocal treatment recommendations in the face of this very serious health problem.

Metabolic syndrome and its components in adult hypopituitary patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in adult hypopituitary patients.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of a cohort of hypopituitary adult patients followed in a single reference center for pituitary diseases. MetS was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria.

Toxicity Profile of PEG-Asparaginase in Adult Patients With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Brazil: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Currently, pediatric-inspired regimens are commonly applied to adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after the recent recognition that these protocols improve survival. While asparaginase in whatever available formulation is a key component of modern treatment of ALL, many adult oncologists and hematologists struggle to deal with its particular toxicities in clinical practice. We reviewed toxicity outcomes of pegylated asparaginase (PEG-ASP) in adults with ALL treated in 3 reference centers in Brazil.

Primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a condition that affects calcium metabolism due to parathyroid hormone (PTH) hypersecretion leading to hypercalcemia. Manifestations have changed over time, from a symptomatic disease with bone pain, fractures, nephrolithiasis, and muscle weakness, to a condition that is mainly asymptomatic (80-90%). Typical symptoms and signs occur in the bones and kidneys and atypical manifestations are cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric and cognitive, neuromuscular, rheumatological, and gastrointestinal.
