Hypopituitarism is a rare endocrine disorder characterized by insufficient hormone secretion from the pituitary gland. This condition leads to deficient production of one or more pituitary hormones, including growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also called arginine vasopressin (AVP). Symptoms vary widely and are often not, late recognized.

2024 SIAC guidelines on cardiorespiratory rehabilitation in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease.

The 2024 Interamerican Society of Cardiology (SIAC) guidelines on cardiorespiratory rehabilitation (CRR) in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease aim to gather and evaluate all relevant evidence available on the topic to unify criteria and promote the implementation of CRR programs in this population in Latin America and other parts of the world. Currently, there is no unified CRR model for the pediatric population. Consequently, our goal was to create these CRR guidelines adapted to the characteristics of congenital heart disease and the physiology of this population, as well as to the realities of Latin America.

This study aimed to determine the onset and duration of action of 3 commercially available topical anesthetic solutions in Brazil, using the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer (Luneau, Paris, France) and to quantitatively assess patient-reported discomfort during application. Amniotic membrane transplantation for neurotrophic corneal ulcers.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical results of cryopreserved amniotic membrane transplantation as a treatment option for refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers.

Methods: This prospective study included 11 eyes of 11 patients who underwent amniotic membrane transplantation for the treatment of refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers at Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Federal do Paraná, in the city of Curitiba, from May 2015 to July 2021. To date, hydroxyurea is the only effective and safe drug that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of individuals with Sickle cell disease. The therapeutic success of hydroxyurea is directly linked to access to the drug, the dose used and adherence to treatment which, in part, is correlated to the availability of hydroxyurea.

Prevalence of radiographic findings in chronic osteomyelitis.

Background: Simple radiography in conjunction with pertinent medical history and a comprehensive physical examination is typically adequate for diagnosing chronic osteomyelitis (CO). However, radiographic manifestations of CO lack specificity; therefore, the concordance among specialists in this regard has not been systematically assessed. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the proficiency of orthopedic surgeons and radiologists in identifying radiographic indicators present in simple radiographs for diagnosing CO.

Natural History of a Disease: Patent Ductus Arteriosus Diagnosed on an Elderly Woman.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a rare finding in adults. The ductus arteriosus (DA) is responsible for shunting blood from the pulmonary artery into the aorta bypassing the lungs in fetal life (the placenta is responsible for fetal oxygenated blood). Its closure happens after birth, once fetal circulation transitions to normal postnatal circulation and blood oxygenates in the lungs.

Introduction: Hereditary ataxias (HAs) encompass a diverse and genetically intricate group of rare neurodegenerative disorders, presenting diagnostic challenges. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) has significantly improved diagnostic success. This study aimed to elucidate genetic causes of cerebellar ataxia within a diverse Brazilian cohort.

Background: Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a hereditary codominant autosomal disease. This liver disease ranges from asymptomatic cases to terminal illness, which makes early recognition and diagnosis challenging. It is the main cause of pediatric liver transplantation after biliary atresia.

Case report: Successful autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a patient with GAD antibody-spectrum disorder with rapidly progressive dementia.

The prevalence of neurological syndromes associated with antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase is increasing. While cognitive impairment is a common feature of this condition, it seldom emerges as the primary symptom. In this study, we discuss a case of refractory dementia associated with the glutamic acid decarboxylase spectrum disorder.

Food packaging and endocrine disruptors.

Objectives: Narrative review evaluating food contamination by endocrine disruptors present in food packaging.

Data Source: The terms "endocrine disruptors" and "food packaging" were used in combination in the PubMed, MEDLINE and SciELO databases, evaluating studies, in humans, published in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish between 1990 and 2023.

Data Synthesis: Packaging, especially those made from plastic or recycled material, is an important source of food contamination by endocrine disruptors.

Analysis of Clostridioides difficile Infection in Children with Diarrhea in Two Hospitals in Southern Brazil.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has been increasingly observed in children, but there is a lack of epidemiological and molecular data on CDI in Latin America. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the role of CDI in children with diarrhea. It included 105 children with antimicrobial-associated diarrhea (AAD) and analyzed the molecular characteristics of strains isolated from two hospitals in southern Brazil between 2017 and 2020.

Use of ultrasonography in the evaluation of urinary retention in critically ill patients.

Objective: to measure urinary volume through bladder ultrasound, performed by a nurse in critically ill patients, after removal of the indwelling urinary catheter and to verify the related factors on urinary retention.

Method: quantitative, observational and cross-sectional study, carried out with 37 critically ill patients of both sexes, over 18 years of age, with removal of indwelling urinary catheter in the last 48 hours. A questionnaire containing sociodemographic and clinical variables and an ultrasound examination were used.
