Introduction: Amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) is an effective antifungal agent for treating invasive fungal infections (IFIs) even though its formulation is associated with potential adverse events, including those related to its infusion. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of acute infusion-related side effects (IRSE) associated with ABLC and their relationship with the profile of patients with oncohematological disease admitted in Brazilian reference tertiary hospitals.

Methods: This is an observational retrospective study that included clinical records of patients hospitalized, in a period of 6 years, diagnosed with probable or proved IFI and treated with at least two doses of ABLC.

This article presents a case study of a 7-year-old female patient with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia, previously treated with chemotherapy. The patient developed acute right peripheral facial paralysis and right upper limb weakness, leading to the discovery of an extra-axial solid lesion at the right cerebellopontine angle. This lesion extended into adjacent structures with notable contrast enhancement and restricted diffusion on magnetic resonance imaging, indicative of chloroma, an extramedullary solid mass composed of myeloid precursor cells.

HCT in the widening spectrum of congenital immunodeficiencies.

Curr Opin Hematol

January 2025

Instituto de Pesquisa Pele Pequeno Principe/Faculdades Pequeno Principe, Hospital de Clinicas da Universidade Federal do Parana, Curitiba, Brazil.

Purpose Of Review: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and inborn errors of immunity (IEI) have been closely linked since transplantation was first used to cure severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in 1968. Since then, novel genes and diseases have been continually added to the ongoing list of IEI, and new data on indications and outcomes have emerged. We review recent data and progress in the field of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for IEI including new diseases and complications.

Introduction: The role of IMP3, CDK4, MDM2 and β-catenin proteins in Enchondroma and Central Chondrosarcoma is not totally understood. The aim of this study is to evaluate the immunoexpression of these proteins, associating histological grade, clinical data and prognosis to these tumors.

Methods: This is a retrospective-analytical study of 32 Enchondroma and 70 Central Chondrosarcoma.

The practice of hormone therapy is crucial in aligning secondary sex characteristics with the gender identity of transgender adults. This study examines the effects of a commonly used injectable hormone combination, specifically estradiol enanthate with dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide (EEn/DHPA), on serum hormonal levels and self-reported satisfaction with breast development in transwomen. Our research focused on a retrospective longitudinal study involving a large cohort of transwomen evaluated between 2020 and 2022, comprising 101 participants.

Objective: To compare costs between treatment strategies employed prior to and after prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PSMA PET/CT) via the Brazilian Unified Health Care System and their impact on the therapeutic management of biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer.

Materials And Methods: The referring physicians were surveyed on their treatment intentions (strategies) at two different time points: prior to and after PSMA PET/CT. Cost comparison results are presented as median (IQR) for each of the two strategies.

Hematol Transfus Cell Ther

September 2024

Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * While promising, this therapy poses challenges, including cardiovascular toxicity, with recent studies suggesting a significant risk of side effects related to cytokine release syndrome, which can lead to serious heart complications.
  • * The review discusses the connection between cytokine release syndrome and heart issues from the therapy, examining risk factors for cardiotoxicity and offering guidelines for patient assessments before and after treatment.

Assessment of erythrocyte alloimmunization among patients treated at a Brazilian university hospital.

Hematol Transfus Cell Ther

November 2024

Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas (ICBIM), Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the frequency of alloimmunization among patients at a Brazilian university hospital, focusing on demographic and clinical characteristics of those with positive irregular antibody screenings.
  • Findings reveal that women were more likely to be alloimmunized, with common blood groups A and O, and anti-D, anti-E, and anti-Kell antibodies frequently detected.
  • The research emphasizes the importance of thorough antibody screening and erythrocyte immunophenotyping to enhance the safety and effectiveness of blood transfusions in clinical settings.

Introduction: Most children with adrenocortical tumors (ACTs) present with accelerated growth and skeletal maturation at diagnosis, which potentially compromises their adult heights (AHs). Knowledge about growth and pubertal patterns after ACT resection is scarce. This study presents the pubertal and auxological development of patients treated for ACT and followed up at a single pediatric endocrinology service in Brazil.

Background: Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis is a significant issue in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, contributing to high mortality rates.

Objectives: Our objectives were to comprehensively describe histoplasmosis treatment with various amphotericin B (AmB) formulations, including mortality rates, adverse effects and risk factors for mortality.

Methods: This multicentre retrospective cohort study (January 2014-December 2019) evaluated medical records of patients with proven or probable histoplasmosis treated with at least two doses of AmB in seven tertiary medical centres in Brazil.

Background: Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) plays a crucial role in breaking down various substrates. It also has effects on the insulin signaling pathway, contributing to insulin resistance, and involvement in inflammatory processes like obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Emerging effects of DPP-4 on bone metabolism include an inverse relationship between DPP-4 activity levels and bone mineral density, along with an increased risk of fractures.

Purpose Of Review: Recent progress in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) characterization, increased accrual of unrelated donors and cord blood units, and a new platform for haploidentical transplantation have resulted in the widespread availability of donors for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Recent Findings: Advances in HLA typing have identified an increasing number of loci and alleles that are crucial for successful transplantation. Newer HLA A, B, C, DRB1, and DQB1 alleles, DPB1 mismatches, and HLA B leader sequence matching are incorporated into donor selection algorithms.

Background: Newborn screening (NBS) for the early detection of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) has been implemented in a few countries. The objective of this study was to verify the situation and define obstacles to the implementation of NBS worldwide.

Methods: A questionnaire was developed by the Inborn Errors of Immunity Committee of the World Allergy Organization (WAO) with 17 questions regarding NBS for IEI in the physician's workplace, NBS test type, problems hindering NBS implementation, reimbursement for IEI therapy, presence of a national IEI registry, referral centers, molecular diagnosis, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation centers, gene therapy, and immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

Intrahepatic biliary stone disease is a difficult condition to treat, due to anatomical complexity of biliary tract, association with colestasis, and high recurrence rates, with potential short- and long-term complications, such as cholangitis and secondary biliary cirrhosis. Removal of biliary stones via intraductal access can be achieved endoscopically or percutaneously, with preference for cholangioscopy-guided laser lithotripsy in complex cases. The surgical approach, despite its prolonged results, is a more invasive and risky procedure.

Background: Malignant gliomas are the most prevalent primary malignant cerebral tumors. Preoperative imaging plays an important role, and the prognosis is closely related to surgical resection and histomolecular aspects. Our goal was to correlate Ki67 indexes with tumoral volumetry in semiautomatic segmentation on preoperative magnetic resonance images and residual fluorescence in a 5-ALA-assisted resection cohort.
