Treatment options for patients with secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML) and AML with myeloid-related changes (AMLMRC) aged 60 to 75 years are scarce and unsuitable. A pivotal trial showed that CPX-351 improved complete remission with/without incomplete recovery (CR/CRi) and overall survival (OS) as compared with standard "3+7" regimens. We retrospectively analyze outcomes of 765 patients with sAML and AML-MRC aged 60 to 75 years treated with intensive chemotherapy, reported to the PETHEMA registry before CPX-351 became available.

Implementation of international guidelines in Latin American settings requires additional considerations (ie, values and preferences, resources, accessibility, feasibility, and impact on health equity). The purpose of this guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations about the diagnosis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and its management in children and during pregnancy. We used the GRADE ADOLOPMENT method to adapt recommendations from 3 American Society of Hematology (ASH) VTE guidelines (diagnosis of VTE, VTE in pregnancy, and VTE in the pediatric population).

Cytogenetic abnormalities (CA) such as t(4;14), t(14;16), and del(17p), are associated with a poor prognosis in Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients. However, there is scarce information regarding the Latin-American population. This study aims to analyze the impact of t(4;14), t(14;16), and del(17p) on the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of transplant-eligible newly-diagnosed MM (NDMM) patients in Latin America.

Background: 18F-fluorodesoxyglucose positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET-CT) has a high sensitivity and specificity to detect medullary and extramedullary lesions in multiple myeloma (MM).

Aim: To describe the findings of PET-CT in extramedullary multiple myeloma (EMM) at diagnosis and at relapse, and correlate its results with clinical variables, response to treatment and survival.

Materials And Methods: Review of medical records and PET-CT reports of 39 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) who had at least one PET-CT study, treated between January 1, 2015, and January 1, 2019 at a clinical hospital.

This srudy aimed to estimate the prevalence of trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity in Uruguayan women diagnosed with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer over a 10-year period, who were treated under the financial coverage of the National Resources Fund (Fondo Nacional de Recursos). This was an observational, descriptive study based on the analysis of an anonymized database of Uruguayan women diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer who received adjuvant trastuzumab treatment from to 2006 to 2016, provided by the Fondo Nacional de Recursos. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics version 25, and variables were assessed using measures of central tendency, dispersion, contingency tables, and proportions.

Introduction: Intraoperative hypotension (IH) is an independent predictor of mortality. Some experts have suggested that ultrasound measurement of the inferior vena cava (IVC) in spontaneous ventilation can predict IH.

Objective: To evaluate the capacity of ultrasound measures of IVC in spontaneous ventilation to predict episodes of IH after anaesthesia induction.

Circulating T regulatory cell subsets in patients with untreated lung cancer.

Clin Transl Oncol

September 2022

Departamento Básico de Medicina, Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quintela, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay.

Introduction: Regulatory T Cells (Tregs) play an important role in carcinogenesis and tumor immunoediting by preventing the development of effective antitumor immunity. Several reports showed that circulating Tregs are increased in patients with solid tumors, including lung cancer. Treg population could be categorized into "naive," "effector," and "memory" subtypes, bearing potential unique functions.

Article Synopsis
  • Heart failure (HF) is common in older adults and often worsened by other health issues; this study analyzed data from a national registry of HF patients aged 50 and over.
  • Out of 5424 patients, a significant 61% died within a year, with mortality rates increasing as the PROFUND index score (a measure of health risk) rose; those with scores above 11 had the highest risk.
  • The findings suggest that the PROFUND index is effective in predicting one-year mortality for HF patients, particularly beneficial for identifying those at intermediate to high risk.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved 327 participants, mostly women, with a notable portion having a family history of breast cancer, and provided online genetic counseling for those carrying the identified variant.
  • * The findings suggest that BRCA genotyping in the Ashkenazi Jewish population in Uruguay is feasible and the detection rate aligns with those found in other Ashkenazi communities, indicating the need for further screening initiatives.

Objectives: This work aims to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and impact on prognosis of right bundle branch block (RBBB) in a cohort of acute heart failure (AHF) patients.

Methods: We prospectively analyzed 3,638 AHF patients included in the RICA registry (National Heart Failure Registry of the Spanish Internal Medicine Society). We independently analyzed the relationship between baseline and clinical characteristics and the presence of RBBB as well as the potential impact of RBBB on 1-year all-cause mortality and a composite endpoint of 90-day post-discharge hospitalization or death.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) could be a useful continuous, non-invasive technique for monitoring the effect of partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) fluctuations in the cerebral circulation during ventilation. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of NIRS to detect acute changes in cerebral blood flow following PaCO2 fluctuations after confirming the autoregulation physiology in piglets. Fourteen piglets (<72 h of life) were studied.

Background: The traditional infusion of "yerba mate" is widely consumed in South America and exported to countries around the world. Although generally considered a "clear fluid", there is no data to date on the gastric emptying time of yerba mate and safe preoperative fasting intervals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gastric emptying time of a standardized infusion of yerba mate using bedside ultrasound and compare it with the time confirm of hot and cold tea.

Frontotemporal Dementias in Latin America: History, Epidemiology, Genetics, and Clinical Research.

Front Neurol

September 2021

Departmento de Neurologia, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

The historical development, frequency, and impact of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are less clear in Latin America than in high-income countries. Although there is a growing number of dementia studies in Latin America, little is known collectively about FTD prevalence studies by country, clinical heterogeneity, risk factors, and genetics in Latin American countries. A systematic review was completed, aimed at identifying the frequency, clinical heterogeneity, and genetics studies of FTD in Latin American populations.
