Foreign body (FB) ingestion and aspiration are frequent causes of pediatric emergency room visits, with significant morbidity and mortality risks. This cross-sectional study analyzed 1,052 pediatric patients admitted for suspected FB events at a single institution between 2008 and 2015, including 886 cases of suspected ingestion and 166 cases of suspected aspiration. Cluster analysis identified three distinct clusters for both groups, with respiratory symptoms being predominant in clusters with worse outcomes.

Int J Cardiol

December 2024

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red-Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV), Av. Monforte de Lemos, 3-5. Pabellón 11. Planta 0 28029, Madrid, Spain; Servicio de Cardiología, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago de Compostela, PC 15706, Choupana s/n, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Spain; Medicine Department, Santiago de Compostela University. San Francisco Street, PC 15701, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Background And Objectives: Over the last two decades, reductions in cardiovascular (CV) and cerebrovascular events for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have been observed, but the non-cardiovascular rates have increased. Early initiation of oral anticoagulation helps reduce AF complications; however, the impact of delayed cardiology care after referral by a Primary Care Physician (PCP) is unknown. The aim of our study is to investigate the association between the elapsed time to cardiology care following a PCP referral and one-year outcomes among patients with AF and analyses gender-specific differences in these outcomes.

Clinicopathological and molecular insights into odontogenic tumors associated with syndromes: A comprehensive review.

World J Exp Med

December 2024

Department of Diagnosis in Pathology and Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Universidad de la República, Montevideo 1600, Uruguay.

The association between genetic syndromes and odontogenic tumors encompasses several entities, reflecting the intricate interplay between genetic factors and the development of these lesions. The present study aimed to comprehensively investigate the associations between genetic syndromes and odontogenic tumors. We delineated the diverse spectrum of syndromic connections, including key syndromes such as Gardner syndrome, Gorlin syndrome, Schimmelpenning syndrome, and others.

Background: Tuberculosis vaccine trials using disease as the primary endpoint are large, time consuming, and expensive. An earlier immunological measure of the protection against disease would accelerate tuberculosis vaccine development. We aimed to assess whether the effectiveness of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for prevention of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection was consistent with that for prevention of tuberculosis disease.

The Global initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) report states that the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should be considered in individuals with chronic respiratory symptoms and / or exposure to risk factors. Forced spirometry demonstrating airflow obstruction after bronchodilation is required to confirm the diagnosis using a threshold of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV) / forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio<0.7.

Objective: To examine the predictors of the occurrence of severe thrombocytopenia and its impact on damage accrual and mortality in SLE patients.

Methods: Factors associated with time to severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count ≤20,000/mm) occurring from the onset of SLE symptoms were assessed by Cox proportional hazards regressions. The association of severe thrombocytopenia with mortality was evaluated by logistic regression analyses while its impact on damage was by negative binomial regression.

Article Synopsis
  • Scabies is a common issue in many tropical areas, especially in places with limited resources, but accurate information on its prevalence in Africa is scarce due to diagnostic challenges.
  • The study aimed to test how well minimally trained field-workers could diagnose scabies compared to standard medical assessments after they received basic training.
  • Results showed that these field-workers had a high diagnostic accuracy (94% sensitivity and 96% specificity), indicating they could effectively identify scabies, which can improve public health initiatives and treatment strategies in affected regions.
