Clin Nutr ESPEN

December 2024

Instituto da Criança do Hospital das Clínicas, School of Medicine, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background: Nutritional intervention during hospitalisation is vital in managing of children and adolescents in intensive care. In this context, body composition measurements, such as mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), can help improve the accuracy of nutritional assessments. However, using MUAC has some limitations.

Objectives: To gather the perspectives of APS ACTION members regarding the strengths and limitations of Damage Index for Antiphospholipid Syndrome (DIAPS); and establish recommendations for the improvement of DIAPS.

Methods: APS ACTION members were invited to answer a survey regarding their satisfaction with DIAPS scoring system and individual items. The level of agreement (LoA) among members with the inclusion of individual items in DIAPS was calculated (LoA of <75% was considered disagreement).

Background: Acute traumatic wounds often require prolonged healing time and hospitalization. Negative-pressure wound therapy with instillation and dwell time (NPWTi-d) has demonstrated effectiveness in accelerating patient healing over traditional NPWT, and its benefits are well established in the treatment of chronic infected wounds. However, randomized studies examining the use of NPWTi-d in acute traumatic wounds are scarce.

Article Synopsis
  • Knee osteoarthritis is becoming more common due to aging and obesity, and biological therapies like microfragmented Adipose Tissue (mFAT) injections may help improve patient outcomes.
  • A study evaluated the safety of harvesting adipose tissue and injecting mFAT in 34 patients under local anesthesia, observing them during the procedure and one week later.
  • Results showed only minor issues like ecchymosis and mild discomfort, with no significant adverse events reported, indicating the procedure is safe.

Introduction: Amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) is an effective antifungal agent for treating invasive fungal infections (IFIs) even though its formulation is associated with potential adverse events, including those related to its infusion. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of acute infusion-related side effects (IRSE) associated with ABLC and their relationship with the profile of patients with oncohematological disease admitted in Brazilian reference tertiary hospitals.

Methods: This is an observational retrospective study that included clinical records of patients hospitalized, in a period of 6 years, diagnosed with probable or proved IFI and treated with at least two doses of ABLC.

Plant biomonitoring in urban ecosystems: a comprehensive review in Sao Paulo.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Laboratorio de Patologia Ambiental e Experimental (LIM05), Hospital das Clinicas - FMUSP, Sao Paulo, 01246-903, Brazil.

Air, water, and soil pollution pose significant threats to environmental and human health, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions. This comprehensive review evaluates the scientific literature on plant biomonitoring in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, from 2009 to 2019, aiming to compile data for future research, assess the distribution of biomonitoring studies, and analyse their relationship to human health outcomes. To the extent of our knowledge, a review according to the criteria of this article has not yet been carried out.

Background: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) of the lower limbs (LLs) is a severe condition caused by peripheral arterial obstructive disease (PAOD). Surgical planning for CLI requires the study of limb circulation, and the vascular resistance index (RI) measured by Doppler ultrasound (US) has been used to aid in surgical decision-making. The objective is to correlate the RI of recipient arteries with the patency of LL revascularization surgeries in patients with CLI.

Lauro Gomes, 2000 - Santo André - SP, 09060-870, Brazil; Research and teaching institute - Rede D'OR, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Oliguria, a condition characterized by decreased urine output, may be misinterpreted as acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients post-surgery, despite being a potential adaptive response during surgery.
  • A study analyzing 1,476 patients revealed that 34.4% exhibited oliguria within the first 24 hours after surgery, with certain factors like vasopressor use and non-elective procedures linked to increased risk.
  • Although oliguria was associated with a higher rate of AKI development compared to non-oliguric patients, 87.6% of oliguric patients did not show kidney dysfunction based on serum creatinine levels, questioning the accuracy of oliguria as an indicator for AKI.

November 2024

Departamento de Infectologia e Medicina Tropical da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo (FMUSP), Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Introduction: Immunocompromised persons are at high risk of persistent Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection and associated diseases. Few studies evaluated HPV vaccines in immunocompromised persons. This study aimed to evaluate the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (4vHPV) immunogenicity and safety in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, in comparison to immunocompetent women (IC).

Background: Patients undergoing perineal defect reconstruction with the internal pudendal artery perforator (IPAP) flap traditionally face 5 days of postoperative bed rest (BR) to minimize surgical risks. However, prolonged BR can exacerbate postoperative physiologic changes such as increased fatigue, reduced body mass, and declining lung function, while also leading to complications such as pneumonia, delirium, deep vein thrombosis, and pressure injuries. This study assessed the effectiveness, feasibility, and safety of an adapted early mobilization (EM) program for these patients.

Introduction: Rituximab, an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, has shown effectiveness in reducing disease relapses and disability accrual through relapses in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). However, its higher cost compared to oral immunosuppressants raises questions about its cost-effectiveness, particularly in low and middle-income countries. This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of early rituximab treatment versus escalation treatment in NMOSD patients.

Assessing the predictive efficacy of European-based systolic blood pressure polygenic risk scores in diverse Brazilian cohorts.

Sci Rep

Laboratório de Genética e Cardiologia Molecular, Faculdade de Medicina, Instituto do Coração, Hospital das Clínicas HCFMUSP, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Despite the identification of numerous genetic variants affecting SBP in European populations, their applicability in admixed populations remains unclear. This study evaluates the predictive efficacy of a systolic blood pressure (SBP) polygenic risk score (PRS), derived from the UK Biobank data, in two Brazilian cohorts. We analyzed 944 K genetic variants consistent across an independent UK Biobank dataset, Brazilian cohorts, and HapMap database.

Introduction: Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (A1AD) is a genetically determined antiproteinase deficiency that predisposes to early-onset emphysema and liver disease. Lung transplantation (LTx) is the final therapeutic option. Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by oral and genital ulcers and deep venous thrombosis associated with large-vessel and small-vessel vasculitis and aneurysms.
