Cardiology Department, University Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta, Girona, Spain; Biomedical Research Institute, Girona (IdIBGi), CIVERCV, ICS, Catalonia, Spain; Department of Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Girona, Spain.

Background: The use of technological innovations in ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care networks has been shown to be effective in improving information flow and coordination, and thus reducing the time to reperfusion. We developed a smartphone application called ODISEA to improve our STEMI care network and evaluated the results of its use.

Method: Quasi-experimental study that compared the outcomes of STEMI suspected patients with an alert and indication for transfer to a cath lab during a previous period and a period in which the ODISEA APP was used.

Codesign and Feasibility Testing of a Tool to Evaluate Overweight and Obesity Apps.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

April 2022

Red de Investigación en Cronicidad, Atención Primaria y Promoción de la Salud (RICAPPS), Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Digital health interventions and mobile technologies can help to reduce the rates of obesity and overweight conditions. Although weight management apps are widely used, they usually lack professional content and evaluation, so the quality of these apps cannot be guaranteed. The EVALAPPS project aims to design and validate a tool to assess the safety and effectiveness of health-related apps whose main goal is to manage and prevent obesity and overweight conditions.

Long-term exposure to PM above WHO guidelines exacerbates COVID-19 severity and mortality.

Environ Int

January 2022

Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Laboratory of Toxicology and Environmental Health, School of Medicine, IISPV, Sant Llorenç 21, 43201 Reus, Catalonia, Spain.

Background: Age, sex, race and comorbidities are insufficient to explain why some individuals remain asymptomatic after SARS-CoV-2 infection, while others die. In this sense, the increased risk caused by the long-term exposure to air pollution is being investigated to understand the high heterogeneity of the COVID-19 infection course.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the underlying effect of long-term exposure to NO and PM on the severity and mortality of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the impact of statin therapy on in-hospital mortality for COVID-19 patients and found that statin users were older and had more health issues compared to non-users.
  • The research involved analyzing data from 2,157 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, revealing that those on statins had a lower death rate (19.8%) compared to those not on statins (25.4%).
  • The findings suggest that continuing statin therapy during hospitalization is beneficial and should not be halted due to concerns related to COVID-19.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is associated with mutations in the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (), apolipoprotein B (), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 () genes. A pathological variant has not been identified in 30-70% of clinically diagnosed FH patients, and a burden of LDL cholesterol (LDL-c)-raising alleles has been hypothesized as a potential cause of hypercholesterolemia in these patients. Our aim was to study the distribution of weighted LDL-c-raising single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) scores (weighted gene scores or wGS) in a population recruited in a clinical setting in Catalonia.

Background: The lack of continuity between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instruments designed for children and adults hinders change analysis with a life course approach. To resolve this gap, EuroQol (EQ) developed the EQ-5D-Youth (EQ-5D-Y), derived from the EQ-5D for adults. Few studies have assessed the metric properties of EQ-5D-Y in children with specific chronic conditions, and none have done so for children with type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Background: The use of apps to tackle overweight and obesity by tracking physical and dietary patterns and providing recommendations and motivation strategies to achieve personalized goals has increased over recent years. However, evidence of the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of these apps is severely lacking.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify efficacy, safety, and effectiveness criteria used to assess weight control, overweight, and obesity management in mobile health (mHealth) interventions through a systematic review.

  • Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) and memantine are commonly prescribed for treating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and this study aimed to analyze how these medications are used among patients over time.
  • A cohort of 2,992 Alzheimer’s patients from a registry was examined to identify characteristics associated with the prescription of these drugs and to track usage trends from 2007 to 2014.
  • Results indicated that a significant majority of patients (70.4%) received antidementia medication at diagnosis, with AChEIs prescribed more frequently than memantine, but the use of AChEIs decreased while memantine use increased as the severity of dementia progressed.
