Objective: Evaluation of epidemiological data on Idiopathic Scoliosis in patients with different pectus subtypes.

Methods: A medical record analysis of 418 patients with pectus, associated with idiopathic scoliosis above 10°, with research on: subtypes of pectus (Lateral Pectus Carinatum, Inferior Pectus Carinatum, Superior Pectus Carinatum, Broad Pectus Excavatum, and Localized Pectus Excavatum), and characteristics of the scoliotic curve (Cobb angle, laterality, and location).

Results: The mean age was 14.

MRI-Based Morphometric Comparison of Lower Leg Muscles and Tendons in Individuals With Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome.

Biomed Res Int

December 2024

Laboratory of Molecular Analysis, Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Science, Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde e Tecnologias, Universidade de Brasília, Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil.

Runners frequently suffer from medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), often linked to excessive eccentric muscle contractions causing periosteal traction by the muscles in the deep posterior compartment. However, the effects of MTSS on these muscles and tendons remain underexplored. This study is aimed at investigating changes in muscle and tendon volumes in this compartment, as well as cross-sectional area measurements, using magnetic resonance imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) can lead to Critical Ischemia (CI) of the Lower Limbs, often resulting in amputation, and Infrared Thermography (IT) is a non-invasive method to assess skin temperature for guiding amputation levels.
  • A study conducted between April and November 2023 at Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal evaluated patients with PAD and CI in preoperative stages, utilizing IT to monitor thermal gradients.
  • Findings indicated that smoking patients exhibited greater thermal gradients and were more inclined to require above-the-knee amputations, demonstrating IT's effectiveness in the preoperative assessment of amputation levels.

Background: Lower limb amputation surgery is associated with a high risk of venous thromboembolism. There is evidence that pharmacological thromboprophylaxis is not widely prescribed to patients undergoing this type of procedure.

Objectives: To investigate the profile of the thromboprophylaxis practices of angiologists and vascular surgeons in Brazil during the perioperative period of lower limb amputation surgery and conduct a descriptive analysis of the findings.

Deep vein thrombosis is one of the main causes of inpatient and outpatient morbidity, both in medical and surgical patients, significantly impacting mortality statistics and requiring prompt diagnosis so that treatment can be initiated immediately. This document was prepared and reviewed by 11 specialists certified by the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, who searched the main databases for the best evidence on the diagnostic (physical examination, imaging) and therapeutic approaches (heparin, coumarins, direct oral anticoagulants, fibrinolytics) to the disease.

Despite the high prevalence of pathogenic variants (PV) carriers in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, germline genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer (HBC) is not available in the Brazilian public health system, and the prevalence of Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is not well established in other regions of Brazil. We assessed the occurrence of p.R337H carriers among women treated for breast cancer (BC) between January 2021 and January 2022 at public hospitals of Brasilia, DF, Brazil.

Background: Knowledge of the pattern of regression and distribution of residual tumor cells may assist in the selection of candidates for rectum-sparing strategies.

Objective: To investigate and identify factors associated with tumor regression pattern and distribution of residual tumor cells.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study of patients with T3/T4 N0/N+ adenocarcinoma of the middle and lower third of the rectum (≤10 cm) treated with radiotherapy (5×5 Gy) followed by 6 cycles of CAPOX chemotherapy.

Background: Early reperfusion therapy is acknowledged as the most effective approach for reducing case fatality rates in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Objective: Estimate the clinical and economic consequences of delaying reperfusion in patients with STEMI.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated mortality rates and the total expenses incurred by delaying reperfusion therapy among 2622 individuals with STEMI.

Background And Aims: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is characterized by chronic cholestasis with associated pruritus and extrahepatic anomalies. Maralixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor, is an approved pharmacologic therapy for cholestatic pruritus in ALGS. Since long-term placebo-controlled studies are not feasible or ethical in children with rare diseases, a novel approach was taken comparing 6-year outcomes from maralixibat trials with an aligned and harmonized natural history cohort from the G lobal AL agille A lliance (GALA) study.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted in April and June 2019, it analyzed data from 27 out of 738 pediatric intensive care units, finding that 74% of patient-days included therapist-provided mobility.
  • * Key factors influencing mobility included increased family presence, which improved out-of-bed activities, while barriers like lack of physician orders hindered mobilization on 27% of patient-days.

We present the investigation and control of an extensively drug-resistant outbreak in a 30-bed intensive care unit (ICU). Within 6 weeks, 4 critically ill trauma patients were infected by the same strain. Intensive containment measures limited the spread of this strain while sustaining the capacity of the trauma ICU.

Background: Influenza infection is a highly preventable transmissible viral disease associated with mild upper respiratory symptoms and more severe conditions such as lethal pneumonia. Studies have shown that a broader spectrum influenza vaccine could reduce influenza's burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. A considerable number of systematic reviews reported that quadrivalent influenza vaccines are considered more effective compared to trivalent vaccines, hence, there is a need for an overview in order to synthesize the current evidence pertaining to the comparison between quadrivalent and trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines.
