, traditionally considered an environmental bacterium, has recently garnered attention for its potential involvement in human health. While prior research hinted at its pathogenic role in humans, our study aims to determine its prevalence and associations in diverse clinical contexts. We examined vaginal swabs from three distinct patient groups: patients with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), patients with cervicovaginal infections, and patients with a history of precancerous lesions undergoing follow-up.

February 2024

Radiology Resident, Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Imaging, Hospital de Alta Especialidad No. 1 Bajío, Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos esquina Insurgentes, Colonia Los Paraísos, PC, 37260, León, Guanajuato, México.

Background And Aim: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) reduce cardiovascular outcomes; one of the target organs is epicardial adipose tissue, achieving a 10-20% change in patients with diabetes but excluding acute coronary syndrome (ACS), Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effect of dapagliflozin on epicardial fat in patients with ACS assessed by non-contrast cardiac tomography (CT) and its association with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).

Methods And Results: This cohort nested case-control study included 52 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and acute myocardial infarction with and without ST-segment elevation. Cases were defined as all patients assigned to dapagliflozin 10 mg, and controls were patients assigned to placebo.

Association of the rs5186 polymorphism of the AGTR1 gene with decreased eGFR in patients with type 2 diabetes from Mexico City.

Nefrologia (Engl Ed)

December 2023

Unidad de Investigación Médica en Bioquímica, Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad "Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda", Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, IMSS, Ciudad de México, México. Electronic address:

Background: Early biomarkers search for Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), as genetic markers to identify vulnerable carriers of the disease even before Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) decline or microalbuminuria development, has been relevant during the last few years. The rs5186 (A116C) polymorphism of the Angiotensin II Receptor Type I gene (AGTR1), has been associated to multiple effects of renal injury risk, commonly detected in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). It has been described that rs5186 could have an effect in stability proteins that assemble Angiotensin II Receptor Type I (AT1), modifying its action, which is why it should be considered as a risk factor for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), characterized by a GFR progressive reduction.

External Validation of Two Scoring Tools to Predict the Operative Duration and Open Conversion of Elective Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in a Mexican Population.

Dig Surg

September 2023

Department of General Surgery, Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad, Hospital de Especialidades No. 14, Centro Médico Nacional "Adolfo Ruiz Cortines," Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Veracruz, Mexico.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the use of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) operative time (CholeS score) and conversion to an open procedure (CLOC score) outside their validation dataset in Mexican population.

Methods: Patients >18 years who underwent elective LC were analyzed in a single-center retrospective chart review study. Association between scores (CholeS and CLOC) with operative time and conversion to open procedures was assessed with Spearman correlation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the genomic features and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Mexico using whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics tools.
  • Clinical isolates were collected from 28 medical centers, and various genetic resistance and virulence factors were identified in these bacteria, indicating a significant presence of resistance genes across the studied strains.
  • The findings highlight the prevalence of multiple resistance genes in the tested bacteria, suggesting urgent attention is needed for managing antibiotic resistance in clinical settings in Mexico.

Myelofibrosis: diagnosis and treatment.

Gac Med Mex

January 2022

Servicio de Hematología, Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado, Ciudad de México, México.

Myelofibrosis (MF) is a BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by clonal myeloproliferation, dysregulated kinase signaling, and release of abnormal cytokines. In recent years, important progress has been made in the knowledge of the molecular biology and the prognostic assessment of MF. Conventional treatment has limited impact on the patients' survival; it includes a wait-and-see approach for asymptomatic patients, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, androgens, or immunomodulatory agents for anemia, cytoreductive drugs such as hydroxyurea for the splenomegaly and constitutional symptoms, and splenectomy or radiotherapy in selected patients.

Servicio de Hematología, Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado, Ciudad de México, México.

In addition to symptoms secondary to splenomegaly, microvascular abnormalities, and thrombohemorrhagic complications, patients with MPN may experience a significant symptom burden attributed to an increase in circulating inflammatory cytokines. These symptoms can be severe and limit quality of life. Therefore, in addition to the prevention of complications, one of the objectives of the treatment of MPN is the control of symptoms.
