Rapid identification of moulds and arthroconidial yeasts from positive blood cultures by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

Moulds and arthroconidial yeasts are potential life-threatening agents of fungemia in immunocompromised patients. Fast and accurate identification (ID) of these pathogens hastens initiation of targeted antifungal therapy, thereby improving the patients' prognosis. We describe a new strategy that enabled the identification of moulds and arthroconidial yeasts directly from positive blood cultures by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS).

Evidence for an Ancestral Association of Human Coronavirus 229E with Bats.

Unlabelled: We previously showed that close relatives of human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) exist in African bats. The small sample and limited genomic characterizations have prevented further analyses so far. Here, we tested 2,087 fecal specimens from 11 bat species sampled in Ghana for HCoV-229E-related viruses by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR).

Rhizopus arrhizus and Fusarium solani Concomitant Infection in an Immunocompromised Host.

Neutropenic patients are at risk of the development of hyalohyphomycosis and mucormycosis. Correct identification is essential for the initiation of the specific treatment, but concomitant mold infections are rarely reported. We report one unprecedented case of concomitant mucormycosis and fusariosis in a neutropenic patient with acute myeloid leukemia.

Standard Triple Therapy versus Sequential Therapy in Helicobacter pylori Eradication: A Double-Blind, Randomized, and Controlled Trial.

Introduction The factors that affect the development of children with and without hearing disabilities are similar, provided their innate communication abilities are taken into account. Parents need to mourn the loss of the expected normally hearing child, and it is important that parents create bonds of affection with their child. Objective To conduct a postevaluation of the development and cognition of 20 candidates for cochlear implants between 1 and 13 years of age and to observe important factors in their development.

Neuropathic pain after brachial plexus avulsion--central and peripheral mechanisms.

Review: The pain that commonly occurs after brachial plexus avulsion poses an additional burden on the quality of life of patients already impaired by motor, sensory and autonomic deficits. Evidence-based treatments for the pain associated with brachial plexus avulsion are scarce, thus frequently leaving the condition refractory to treatment with the standard methods used to manage neuropathic pain. Unfortunately, little is known about the pathophysiology of brachial plexus avulsion.

Microbial colonization affects the efficiency of photovoltaic panels in a tropical environment.

Sub-aerial biofilm (SAB) development on solar panels was studied in São Paulo. After 6, 12 and 18 months' exposure, photovoltaic panels were covered by increasing proportions of organic matter (42%, 53% and 58%, respectively). Fungi were an important component of these biofilms; very few phototrophs were found.

Role of GLI2 in hypopituitarism phenotype.

GLI2 is a zinc-finger transcription factor involved in the Sonic Hedgehog pathway. Gli2 mutant mice have hypoplastic anterior and absent posterior pituitary glands. We reviewed the literature for patients with hypopituitarism and alterations in GLI2.

Long-term efficacy and safety of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in HIV-1-infected adolescents failing antiretroviral therapy: the final results of study GS-US-104-0321.

Background: Reports of long-term tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) treatment in HIV-infected adolescents are limited. We present final results from the open-label (OL) TDF extension following the randomized, placebo (PBO)-controlled, double-blind phase of GS-US-104-0321 (Study 321).

Methods: HIV-infected 12- to 17-year-olds treated with TDF 300 mg or PBO with an optimized background regimen (OBR) for 24-48 weeks subsequently received OL TDF plus OBR in a single arm study extension.

Outcomes on quality of life, weight loss, and comorbidities after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Context: Bariatric surgery has become the most effective method for producing weight loss in obese patients. The evaluation of improvement of comorbidities and changes in the quality of life are important outcome factors; however, it is necessary to investigate whether they persist over the long term.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 143 obese patients from our institution from February 2007 to February 2008.

Correction of metabolic acidosis in hemodialysis: consequences on serum leptin and mineral metabolism.

Purpose: Hyperleptinemia and metabolic acidosis (MA) are frequently observed in patients on hemodialysis (HD). While the role of leptin in patients on HD is not completely understood, HD only partially corrects MA. Both leptin and acidosis have effect on bone disease.

Comparison of two methods of RNA extraction from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens.

The present study aimed to compare two different methods of extracting RNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We further aimed to identify possible influences of variables--such as tissue size, duration of paraffin block storage, fixative type, primers used for cDNA synthesis, and endogenous genes tested--on the success of amplification from the samples. We systematically reviewed the efficacy of stimulant and non-stimulant drugs on driving performance of ADHD patients. We searched several databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published through March, 2013.

Evaluation of VITEK 2 for discriminating Trichosporon species: misidentification of Trichosporon non-T. asahii.

The VITEK 2 system was evaluated for the identification of 74 Trichosporon invasive and non-invasive clinical isolates, comparing its results with the IGS1 sequencing. The system correctly identified Trichosporon asahii but not non-T. asahii isolates, which represented nearly 50% of the invasive infections in our nosocomial setting.

Objective: To expand norms for the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) for the Brazilian middle-age and elderly populations.

Methods: The DRS was administered to 502 individuals without cognitive deficits, 312 women and 190 men, aged 50 years or over and with educational level ranging from 0 to 13 years or more. The sample was composed of subjects who participated in other studies, from Caeté (Minas Gerais state), Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo state) and São Paulo (São Paulo state).

The new mutation L321F in Candida albicans ERG11 gene may be associated with fluconazole resistance.

Background: For many years fluconazole has been commonly used to treat Candida infections. However, the indiscriminate use of this antimycotic therapy has favored the emergence of resistant isolates. Mutations in the ERG11 gene have been described as one of the primary mechanisms of resistance in Candida species.

Endophthalmitis as a first manifestation of right-sided endocarditis in a patient with patent foramen ovale.

Endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare complication of endocarditis, rendering poor visual prognosis. We report a case of a 66-year-old female with renal failure who presented with fever, ocular pain, and purulent eye discharge. After a diagnosis of endogenous endophthalmitis, she was treated with antibiotics and enucleation of the eye.

Study of the anatomy of the tibial nerve and its branches in the distal medial leg.

Objective: Determine, through dissection in fresh cadavers, the topographic anatomy of the tibial nerve and its branches at the ankle, in relation to the tarsal tunnel.

Methods: Bilateral dissections were performed on 26 fresh cadavers and the locations of the tibial nerve bifurcation and its branches were measured in millimeters. For the calcaneal branches, the amount and their respective nerves of origin were also analyzed.
