Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a holistic approach to managing blood as a resource of each patient; it is a multimodal strategy that is implemented using a set of techniques that can be applied in individual cases. In fact, the overall result of the implementation of PBM cannot be fully appreciated or explained by simply summing up the effects of the individual strategies and techniques used, since they can only produce the expected ideal result if combined. Implementing a PBM program in healthcare offers several benefits including improved patient safety, better outcomes, cost savings, conservation of resources, evidence-based practice, transfusion alternatives, improved quality of care, compliance with accreditation standards, patient-centered care, and professional education and training.

Managing the patient's blood and hematopoietic system is like managing any of the other organs and organ systems during patient care. Specialists control the heart, kidneys, endocrine system, etc. and the patient's blood requires similar clinical treatment.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a multidimensional approach that seeks to optimize the use of blood and its components in patients. This matter emerged as a response to the need to reduce unnecessary exposure to blood transfusions and their potential risks. In the past, blood transfusion was often overused resulting in complications and high costs.

Introduction: Treatment-free remission (TFR) is a new goal of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) therapy. TFR is feasible when the patient has achieved a deep and stable molecular response and met the criteria required to ensure its success. Treatment discontinuation should not be proposed to the CML patient if minimum conditions are not met.

Introduction: The Acute Leukemia-European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (AL-EBMT) risk score was recently developed and validated by Shouval et al. OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of this score in predicting the 2-year overall survival (OS-2), leukemia-free survival (LFS-2) and transplant-related mortality (TRM) in acute leukemia (AL) adult patients undergoing a first allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) at a transplant center in Brazil.
Methods: In this prospective, cohort study, we used the formula published by Shouval et al.

Introduction: Transthoracic echocardiography is a safe and readily available tool for noninvasive monitoring of Cardiac Output (CO). The use of the suprasternal window situated at the sternal notch can be an alternative approach for estimating blood flow. The present study aimed to compare two methods of CO calculation.

Since the World has been facing the COVID-19 pandemic, special attention has been taken concerning cancer patients; related to their immunosuppression status, adding risk for more aggressive COVID-19 and mortality, but also concerns about the access and the quality of care in cancer therapy. The COVID-19 pandemic impacts the number of infected, its related mortality, as well as the care of cancer patients. Multiple myeloma patients are a particular group with several important aspects to be considered during pandemic times.

Objectives: We describe the preliminary results of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) in a group of patients with ascending aortic disease from the Global Registry for Endovascular Aortic Treatment (GREAT).
Methods: We identified TEVAR performed for diseases truly originating from the ascending aorta. Between July 2011 and May 2015, 5014 patients were enrolled; six (0.

Background: ABO blood group incompatibility between donor and recipient is associated with a number of immunohematological complications, but is not considered a major contraindication to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, available evidence from the literature seems to be conflicting as to the impact of incompatibility on overall survival, event-free survival, transplant-related mortality, graft-versus-host disease, and time to neutrophil and platelet engraftment.
Methods: This single-center, prospective, cohort study included patients with hematological malignancies who underwent a first allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation between 2008 and 2014.

The Recommendations for Management of Endemic Diseases and Travel Medicine in Solid-Organ Transplant Recipients and Donors: Latin America clinical practice guideline is intended to guide clinicians caring for solid-organ transplant (SOT) donors, candidates and recipients regarding infectious diseases (ID) issues related to this geographical region, mostly located in the tropics. These recommendations are based on both systematic reviews of relevant literature and expert opinion from both transplant ID and travel medicine specialists. The guidelines provide recommendations for risk evaluation and laboratory investigation, as well as management and prevention of infection of the most relevant endemic diseases of Latin America.

Objective: The disease of the aortic arch is traditionally approached by open surgical repair requiring cardiopulmonary bypass and circulatory arrest. This study performed a retrospective analysis comparing outcomes through primary hybrid patients submitted to aortic arch surgery without cardiopulmonary bypass with patients submitted to conventional open surgery.
Methods: 25 patients submitted to the aortic arch surgery were selected in the period 2003-2012 at the Madre Teresa Hospital in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil; 13 of these underwent hybrid technique without cardiopulmonary bypass and 12 underwent conventional open surgery.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a rare disease in solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Therefore, little is known about the risk factors and disease behavior in the transplant setting. This multicenter, matched case-control study (1:2 ratio) was designed to determine the risk factors, clinical features and outcomes of VL among this population.
