Objective: To evaluate the safety of the methotrexate (MTX)-leflunomide (LEF) combination in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), comparing it with other therapeutic schemes involving conventional synthetic (cs-) and biologic (b-) disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) or Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi).

Methods: Patients with RA starting a treatment course with a csDMARD (without previous use of bDMARD or JAKi) or their first bDMARD/JAKi were followed up in a registry-based, multicentric cohort study in Brazil (BiobadaBrasil). The primary outcome was the incidence of serious adverse events (SAEs); secondary outcomes included serious infections.

We present a 6-year-old girl with skin hyperpigmentation, leukoplakia, and onychodystrophy, the classic mucocutaneous triad usually associated with dyskeratosis congenita. The patient also had premature graying of the hair, bone marrow failure, hepatitis, exudative retinopathy, osteopenia with multiple long bone fractures, and intracranial calcifications and brain cysts. Coats plus syndrome is a rare disease with a clinical and genetic overlap with dyskeratosis congenita.

Objective: To evaluate the contribution that unilateral thoracic sympathectomy in dominant side or two-stage bilateral thoracic sympathectomy can have as strategies to reduce the incidence of compensatory sweating after sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.

Methods: This is a prospective, controlled, randomized multicenter trial of 200 participants with palmar hyperhidrosis, which will be randomized into two arms: (a) one-stage bilateral thoracic sympathectomy (control arm); or (b) unilateral thoracic sympathectomy in dominant side (intervention arm). At six months the participants submitted to unilateral procedure can make the contralateral surgery if they wanted it, creating a third group called two-stage bilateral sympathectomy.

Sterol O-Acyl Transferase 1 as a Prognostic Marker of Adrenocortical Carcinoma.

Cancers (Basel)

January 2020

Unidade de Suprarrenal, Laboratório de Hormônios e Genética Molecular LIM/42, Serviço de Endocrinologia e Metabologia, Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, Av. Dr. Enéas de Carvalho Aguiar, 155, São Paulo, SP 05403-900, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and aggressive type of cancer with no significant treatment advancements, making the search for new prognostic biomarkers crucial.
  • - The study focused on Sterol-O-acyl transferase 1 (SOAT1), which is linked to cholesterol metabolism, finding that strong expression of SOAT1 in ACC tumors indicates a worse prognosis and is associated with aggressive cancer features.
  • - The research revealed that high SOAT1 levels can predict lower overall survival and recurrence-free survival in ACC patients, emphasizing its potential as a significant biomarker for assessing clinical outcomes.

We describe regional differences in therapy for bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) or carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). Patients (n = 1482) in 12 countries from an observational study of BSI caused by ESBL-E or CPE were included. Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for the influence of country of recruitment on empirical use of β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors (BLBLIs) or carbapenems, targeted use of BLBLIs for ESBL-E and use of targeted combination therapy for CPE.

Unidad Clínica de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología, Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena, Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla, Universidad de Sevilla, Seville, Spain; Departamento de Medicina, Universidad de Sevilla, Seville, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: The best available treatment against carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of appropriate therapy and of appropriate combination therapy on mortality of patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to CPE.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included patients with clinically significant monomicrobial BSIs due to CPE from the INCREMENT cohort, recruited from 26 tertiary hospitals in ten countries.

Background: Previous studies suggest that intestinal epithelial stem cells (IESC), critical drivers of homeostasis and regeneration, include two subpopulations: crypt-based columnar and "position +4" stem cells, identified by Lgr5 and Bmi1 biomarkers, respectively. Teduglutide is an enterotrophic counterpart of glucagon-like peptide 2. This study aimed to investigate the response of putative IESC to surgical injury and teduglutide administration on an animal model of intestinal resection and anastomosis.
