Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare, but potentially fatal, immune-mediated disease of the peripheral nerves and nerve roots that is usually triggered by infections. The incidence of GBS can therefore increase during outbreaks of infectious diseases, as was seen during the Zika virus epidemics in 2013 in French Polynesia and in 2015 in Latin America. Diagnosis and management of GBS can be complicated as its clinical presentation and disease course are heterogeneous, and no international clinical guidelines are currently available.

Head and neck cancer associated with myiasis.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

July 2022

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Pernambuco, Recife-PE, Brazil; Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hospital da Restauração, Pernambuco, Brazil. Electronic address:

Head and neck cancer patients represent a risk group for the development of fly larvae infestation in neoplastic wounds. This condition can accelerate the disease progression and increase its lethality due to local or systemic complications. The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review on head and neck cancer associated with myiasis in order to answer the focal question: what are the occurrence, diagnosis, aetiology, treatment and outcomes of head and neck cancer associated with myiasis? This paper was structured based on the five-steps methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley (Int J Soc Res Methodol 2005;1:19-32), and followed the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), OSF Registries protocol.

Bullet embolism (BE) is a rare and misdiagnosed phenomenon that can significantly affect the cardiovascular system. It occurs when a bullet enters and migrates through the body vessels in gunshot victims. We report in this article a case of a 25-year-old male patient, victim of penetrating trauma caused by a firearm projectile that presented two embolism destinations with acute ischemic repercussions: the right brachial artery and the branches of the superior mesenteric artery.

Rev Bras Ter Intensiva

November 2021

Disciplina de Anestesiologia, Dor e Terapia Intensiva, Universidade Federal de São Paulo - São Paulo (SP), Brasil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and compared them to those in 27 other countries as part of the Fluid-TRIPS project.
  • On the study day, a significantly lower percentage of patients in Brazil (16.1%) received fluids compared to patients in other countries (26.8%), with a higher emphasis on crystalloids, particularly sodium chloride (0.9%).
  • Factors influencing fluid choice included patient serum albumin levels and the type of healthcare provider prescribing the fluids.

In the last decade, gastroenterologists have been attempting to use endoscopy to reproduce the great success of traditional surgical suture techniques. Despite recent advances, we still lack a reliable method that results in a permanent suture with minimal incidence of suture failure. This was an experimental study in pigs with an innovative technique that applied basic surgical concepts to endoscopy to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel suture technique.

Peripheral spectrum neurological disorder after arbovirus infection is associated with HLA-F variants among Northeastern Brazilians.

Infect Genet Evol

August 2021

Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, AV Bandeirantes, 3900, HC, Vila Monte Alegre, 14049900 Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Introduction: Non-classical class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA) molecules are known to modulate the function of cytotoxic cells (NK and T CD8+) during viral infection by interacting with inhibitory/activating receptors. However, little is known about the HLA-E/-F genetic variability on arbovirus infections.

Methods: We evaluated by massive parallel sequencing the full HLA-E/-F genetic diversity among patients infected during the arbovirus (ZIKV, DENV, and CHIKV) outbreak leading to a broad range of neurological complications in the Brazilian State of Pernambuco.

Severe neurological complications following arbovirus infections have been a major concern in seasonal outbreaks, as reported in the Northeast region of Brazil, where the same mosquito transmitted Zika (ZIKV), Dengue (DENV), and Chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses. In this study, we evaluated the levels of 36 soluble markers, including cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and soluble HLA-G (Luminex and ELISA) in: i) serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), during the acute phase and two years after the infection (recovery phase, only serum), ii) the relationship among all soluble molecules in serum and CSF, and iii) serum of infected patients without neurological complications, during the acute infection. Ten markers (sHLA-G, IL-10, IL-22, IL-8, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, MCP-1, HGF, VEGF, and IL-1RA) exhibited differential levels between the acute and recovery phases, with pronounced increases in MIP-1α (<0.

Percutaneous solutions for biliary stent dysfunction: pictorial essay.

Radiol Bras

January 2021

Escola Paulista de Medicina da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (EPM-Unifesp), São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Plastic and metal biliary stents can fail to function properly, such failure being due to a positioning error or to the migration, occlusion, or fracture of the stent. An obstructed biliary stent can act as a nidus, causing complications such as recurrent persistent cholangitis. It can also cause vascular complications (such as bleeding and the formation of pseudoaneurysms), perforate the liver capsule (causing biloma or abscess), or, in rare cases, cause intestinal obstruction or perforation.
