  • Primary spinal cord glioblastomas (GBMs) are rare but aggressive tumors that primarily affect young males, exhibiting distinct clinical characteristics compared to cranial GBMs.
  • A systematic review analyzed data from 237 patients, revealing that most tumors occur in the cervical and thoracic spine, with motor deficits as the main symptom.
  • Patients typically underwent surgery, with many receiving additional chemotherapy and radiotherapy; the average progression-free survival was 11.5 months and overall survival was 15.3 months, showing no significant differences based on sex or age.

Deep burns damage the reticular dermis and may lead to the formation of hypertrophic scars. Compression therapy reduces local vascularity and realigns collagen fibers, resulting in esthetic and functional improvements. This study evaluated the effect of Kinesio tape compression with maximum mechanical tension on vascularity, pliability and the height of hypertrophic scars following deep burns.

Updates in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis.

Rev Bras Ortop (Sao Paulo)

June 2024

Instituto Nacional de Traumatologia e Ortopedia (INTO), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory and degenerative condition resulting in articular cartilage destruction and functional loss. Its prevalence has grown considerably due to increased life expectancy and obesity, and its diagnosis relies on evaluation, medical examination, and confirmation by supplementary radiographic images. Knee OA is multifactorial and influenced by several local, systemic, and external aspects.

Urothelial carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer (BC), accounting for approximately 90% of all cases. Evaluating the depth of tumor invasion in the bladder wall (tumor staging) is essential for determining the treatment and prognosis in patients with BC. Neoadjuvant therapy followed by radical cystectomy is the most common treatment of localized muscle-invasive BC (MIBC).

  • * A study of 99 patients with aneurysmal SAH in Recife, Brazil, found that 85.9% had low serum vitamin D levels despite high sun exposure, especially among individuals with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin type IV and V).
  • * Findings suggest a relationship between low vitamin D levels and various factors such as diet, skin melanin, and possible genetic traits, raising questions about vitamin D's role in vascular health despite generally high sunlight exposure in the tropical setting

Dissecting posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms are uncommon lesions. Their anatomy and the location of the dissection are variable, however, they usually occurs at the origin of the PICA. Dissecting PICA aneurysms generally have non-vascular morphology involving an entire segment of the artery and cannot be cut.

Key Clinical Message: The findings in the literature, as well as those described in this study, emphasize the need for systematic and longitudinal care for patients with neglected diseases during and after treatment, mainly in low-middle income countries.

Abstract: Leprosy is a chronic, granulomatous, mycobacterial infection caused by mycobacterium leprae, affecting the skin and peripheral nervous system. We present a case of a 13-year-old child with leprosy for more than a year, indicating decompression of the ulnar nerve.

Background: Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) is a rare but severe condition affecting children early and is usually secondary to an identifiable brain disorder. It is related to psychomotor deterioration in childhood and epilepsy in adult life. Treatment is challenging as infantile spasms may not respond to most antiseizure medication, and relapse is frequent.

Internal carotid artery blood blister-like aneurysms are challenging lesions that arise from the artery trunk at non-branching sites. They have been recognized since 1969 and are distinct from typical saccular aneurysms. Usually, these aneurysms are broad-based, with no clearly identifiable neck and have extremely friable and fragile walls, thus with a great propensity to cause subarachnoid hemorrhage and to rupture during treatment.

Pain generator-based lumbar spinal decompression surgery is the backbone of modern spine care. In contrast to traditional image-based medical necessity criteria for spinal surgery, assessing the severity of neural element encroachment, instability, and deformity, staged management of common painful degenerative lumbar spine conditions is likely to be more durable and cost-effective. Targeting validated pain generators can be accomplished with simplified decompression procedures associated with lower perioperative complications and long-term revision rates.

This systematic review answered the guiding question using the PICO system: "What are the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) on alveolar ridge preservation and tissue gain in reconstructive and jaw graft surgery?" Searches were performed in the PubMed|MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and LILACS|bvs databases. In total, 573 articles were found in the initial search, and 564 were evaluated after the removal of duplicates, of which 5 randomized controlled trials met the eligibility criteria and were included 2 studies investigated the effect of A-PRF on the preservation of the bone ridge, 1 study evaluated the tissue repair after tooth extraction with A-PRF, 1 evaluated the peri-implant gap filling with A-PRF-xenograft mixture, and other the A-PRF on the treatment of alveolar osteitis. Advanced-PRF preparation protocol varied between the included studies from 8 to 13 minutes of centrifugation, at 1300 RPM (200 g ).
