Developmental neuropathology laboratory - Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, Campus Ribeirão Preto - SP, Av bandeirantes, 3900, Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, 14040-900, Brazil.

Introduction: Hydrocephaly is a disease that affects not only the dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid, but also other structures of the central nervous system. Although shunt is effective in reducing ventriculomegaly, many neurological damages are not reversed with surgery. Several studies demonstrate that oxidative stress is involved in the genesis of hydrocephalus lesions.

Background: Aiming at fostering local development of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery centers in developing countries, the nonprofit organization Children's HeartLink (CHL) encourages centers to participate in the International Quality Improvement Collaborative Database for Congenital Heart Disease (IQIC). The definition of parameters and data to evaluate patient treatment provides an opportunity to improve quality of care, reducing morbidity and mortality. The objective of the study was to analyze the outcomes of the partnership between CHL and IQIC database with a single pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery center for seven years providing continuous follow-up to guide actions aiming at morbidity and mortality reduction in patients with pediatric and congenital heart diseases.

Practical Application of the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group Staging System: A Pictorial Review.

Curr Probl Diagn Radiol

January 2020

Department of Radiology, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX; Department of Radiology, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA; Center for Pediatric and Maternal Value, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, Stanford, CA. Electronic address:

Because of issues with the previous staging system, the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group Staging System (INRG-SS) was created in 2009. The INRG-SS is based on preoperative imaging, rather than surgical, staging and emphasizes Imaging-Defined Risk Factors as the determining factors between L1 and L2 stages. Like with the introduction of any new tool, based on the authors' experience, there has been a time-lag related to adoption of the INRG-SS staging system by radiologists.

Dysplastic megalencephaly, also known as bilateral hemimegalencephaly, is a rare cerebral malformation characterized by bilateral cerebral hemisphere overgrowth and extensive malformation of cortical development. Affected patients present clinically with intractable seizures, severe neurological impairment and global developmental delay. There is a small body of literature reporting megalencephaly's association with neonatal high-output cardiac failure and a lack of literature describing prenatal findings.

Article Synopsis
  • Symptomatic toxoplasmosis affects about 10-20% of those infected, posing significant public health issues, especially in Brazil.
  • This study aimed to enhance the molecular diagnosis of symptomatic toxoplasmosis by comparing the efficacy of two primer sets (B1 and REP-529) in detecting Toxoplasma gondii DNA through real-time PCR in 807 clinical samples.
  • The results showed that REP-529 was more sensitive, detecting T. gondii DNA in 97.23% of positive samples, compared to 78.80% for B1, thereby supporting its use as a more effective diagnostic tool.
