A discordant lymphoma occurs where 2 distinct histologic subtypes coexist in at least 2 separate anatomic sites. Histologic discordance is most commonly observed between the bone marrow (BM) and lymph nodes (LNs), where typically aggressive lymphoma is found in a LN biopsy with indolent lymphoma in a BM biopsy. Although the diagnosis of discordance relied heavily on histopathology alone in the past, the availability of flow cytometry and molecular studies have aided the identification of this entity.

Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is an orphan subtype of leukaemia which constitutes less than 2% of all leukaemia's, with an incidence of less than 1 per 100,000 persons per annum. Median age at presentation is 55 years and it is 3-4 times more frequent in males. It is also more frequently encountered in whites and less in Asians, Africans and Arabs.

Over the last 20 years there have been sustained and dramatic improvements in the therapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Until 1990, therapy for CLL was based on alkylating agents, chlorambucil and cyclophosphamide, which did not impact meaningfully on overall survival. The more recent therapeutic regimens, built on combination chemoimmunotherapy, achieve complete responses in 40-50% of cases.

Objective: To verify whether absolute monocyte count (AMC) and lymphocyte- monocyte ratio (LMR) at diagnosis are valid prognostic parameters in classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL).

Patients And Methods: Data were collected from 1450 patients with cHL treated in Israel and Italy from January 1, 1988, through December 31, 2007.

Results: The median age of the patients was 33 years (range, 17-72 years), and 70% (1017) of the patients had nodular sclerosis (NS); the median follow-up duration was 87 months.

The randomized Haemato Oncology Foundation for Adults in The Netherlands 68 phase 3 trial compared front-line chemotherapy with chemotherapy plus the CD52 monoclonal antibody alemtuzumab for high-risk chronic lymphocytic leukemia, defined as at least 1 of the following: unmutated immunoglobulin heavy chain genes, deletion 17p or 11q, or trisomy 12. The goals of this article are to discuss the potential risk of children whose parents were traumatized by terror, to present literature on parenting in the context of terror, and to consider factors that may mediate the transmission of trauma-effects from parents to children. Mediators considered are parents' traumatic distress, disturbed parent-child interactions, trauma-related disturbances in parents' thinking, and effects of stress on children's neural functioning. Also discussed are genetic and environmental factors that may moderate the transmission of intergenerational effects and promote children's risk and resilience.

The neuromuscular weakness associated with myasthenia gravis (MG) can be transiently relieved by pharmacological inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Here, we expand the anticholinesterase repertoire to include 2'-O-methyl-protected antisense oligonucleotides targeted to AChE mRNA (EN101). Using stimulated-single fiber electromyography, we show that EN101 treatment of rats with experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG), improved the mean consecutive difference (MCD) and blocking for 24h.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) plays a key role in the production of proinflammatory mediators, namely the arachidonic acid-derived eicosanoids, lysophospholipids, and platelet-activating factor, and indirectly influences the generation of cytokines, nitric oxide (NO), and free radicals. The immunomodulating capacity of heparin led us to test the effect of the synthetic heparin-mimicking and low anticoagulant compound RG-13577 on the course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and central nervous system (CNS) inflammation. EAE was induced in SJL mice by inoculation with whole mouse spinal cord homogenate. RG-13577, delivered intraperitoneally, inhibited the clinical signs of acute EAE and markedly ameliorated inflammation in the spinal cord, primarily by inhibiting heparanase activity in lymphocytes and astrocytes and thus impairing lymphocyte traffic.

D15S63 is one of the loci, on chromosome 15q11-q13, that exhibit parent-of-origin dependent methylation and that is commonly used in the diagnosis of Prader-Willi or Angelman syndromes (PWS/AS). A 28-kb deletion spanning the D15S63 locus was identified in five unrelated patients; in each of them the deletion was inherited from a normal parent. Three of the five families segregating the deletion were reported to be of Jewish Ashkenazi ancestry, and in the other two families the ancestral origin was unknown.

1,25-dihydroxyvitaminD3 [1,25-(OH)2D3] and PTH both act to increase serum calcium. In addition, 1,25-(OH)2D3 decreases PTH gene transcription, which is relevant both to the physiology of calcium homeostasis and to the management of the secondary hyperparathyroidism of patients with chronic renal failure. In chronic hypocalcemia there is secondary hyperparathyroidism with increased levels of PTH mRNA and serum PTH despite markedly increased levels of 1,25-(OH)2D3.

Peripheral blood samples from 61 patients (36 male, 25 female) with all stages of B-type chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) were studied for MDR1 phenotype using monoclonal antibodies and rhodamine-123 dye exclusion, a functional assay of MDR1 expression. The duration of the disease varied from 1 month to 22 years at the time of initial study. Overall, 74% of the patients were positive for rhodamine-123 exclusion.

Intravascular lymphomatosis (IVL) is a rare malignancy characterized by neoplastic proliferation of lymphoid cells within the lumens of arteries, small veins and capillaries. We report four patients with IVL and review the recent world literature, relating to incidence, clinical features and possible therapy. In these cases diagnosis was established coincidentally in one patient after prostatectomy.

This report describes the development of B-cell lymphocytic, leukemia, probably a leukaemic phase of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, in a patient with Hodgkin's disease (HD) who was successfully treated and cured with MOPP combination chemotherapy and mantle radiotherapy. The leukaemia occurred seven years after the completion of chemoradiotherapy, and manifested as peripheral blood and bone-marrow involvement alone without any initial evidence of lymphadenopathy, organomegaly or extranodal disease at the time of diagnosis. The occurrence of B-lymphocytic leukaemia in a cured patient with HD is rare, and the association of these two disorders is reviewed and discussed in the light of current knowledge.

During the last five years, a new anthracycline 4:demethoxy daunorubicin or ldarubicin (IDR) has been found to be useful as an antileukemic agent. IDR is less cardiotoxic and has unequivocal biological activity when administered orally. Therefore, the choice of this oral agent to treat elderly acute non-lymphoid leukemias (ANLL) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) on an out-patient basis is attractive for obvious reasons.
