Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted across 13 institutions with 692 patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) to evaluate the effects of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on survival, quality of life (QOL), and overall function over 2 years.
  • Results showed that while HCT initially seemed to reduce mortality risk and improve quality of life, these benefits were less significant once factors like age and comorbidities were considered.
  • The findings suggest that the apparent survival advantages of HCT may stem from healthier patient selection rather than the treatment itself, highlighting the need for more controlled trials to better identify suitable candidates for HCT.

  • A study examined cardiorespiratory events (CREs) in healthy term newborns during early skin-to-skin contact after birth, finding that 66.5% experienced at least one CRE, marked by low oxygen saturation or abnormal heart rates.
  • Factors increasing the risk of CREs included maternal age of 35 or older, being a first-time mother, a gestational BMI over 25, and births occurring at night.
  • Identifying these risk factors allows healthcare providers to monitor at-risk newborns more closely during early skin-to-skin contact, improving care and outcomes.

J Oncol

April 2022

Department of Gastroenterology, Shenzhen People's Hospital (the Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University; The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology), Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Ascites, a condition often caused by various diseases, can be investigated using a new technique called single orifice percutaneous endoscopic surgery (SOPES), which accesses the peritoneal cavity through the contralateral McBurney's point or umbilicus.
  • A study compared the effectiveness of these two access points over a span of 11 years, focusing on diagnostic accuracy, complications, procedure time, and hospital costs.
  • Results indicated that while both approaches had similar diagnostic success rates, the contralateral McBurney's point (IM group) had a significantly lower complication rate and shorter procedure time compared to the umbilicus approach (UM group), demonstrating SOPES as a valuable tool for assessing ascites.

In myelofibrosis, pathologically enhanced extracellular matrix production due to aberrant cytokine signalling and result() in impaired hemopoiesis. Disease progression is still determined by detecting reticulin and collagen fibrosis with Gomori's silver impregnation. Here, we tested whether the expression growth related biomarkers L-NGFR/CD271, phospho-ERK1-2 and CXCL12 can be linked to the functional activation of bone marrow stromal cells during primary myelofibrosis progression.
