Background & Aims: With the rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a significant etiology for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), lean NAFLD-HCC has emerged as a specific distinct subtype. This study sought to investigate long-term outcomes following curative-intent hepatectomy for early-stage NAFLD-HCC among lean patients compared with overweight and obese individuals.
Methods: A multicenter retrospective analysis was used to assess early-stage NAFLD-HCC patients undergoing curative-intent hepatectomy between 2009 and 2022.

Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS) is an autosomal recessive disorder. We established an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a 2-year-old boy with Johanson-Blizzard syndrome carrying a compound heterozygous mutation of c.3167C>G (p.

To investigate the efficacy and safety of tocilizumab in the treatment of critically ill children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE). It is a retrospective cohort study. The children with ANE admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of 4 Chinese tertiary hospitals from December 2022 to November 2023 were divided into conventional treatment group and tocilizumab group, and the comparison between groups was performed by using Mann - Whitney test or Chi-square test.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a fatal tumor type that is prone to drug resistance. In our previous study, we showed that human rhomboid-5 homolog-1 (RHBDF1) was differentially expressed in 5 intrinsic cisplatin-resistant SCLC tissues compared with 5 intrinsic cisplatin-sensitive SCLC tissues by RNA sequencing, which intrigued us. We performed gain- and loss-of-function experiments to investigate RHBDF1 function, bioinformatics analysis, qRT-PCR, western blotting, and immunoprecipitation to elucidate the molecular mechanisms as well as detect RHBDF1 expression in SCLC by immunohistochemistry.

Nanocatalytic therapy is an emerging technology that uses synthetic nanoscale enzyme mimics for biomedical treatment. However, in the field of neuroscience, achieving neurological protection while simultaneously killing tumor cells is a technical challenge. Herein, we synthesized a biomimic and translational cerium vanadate (CeVO) nanozyme for glioblastoma (GBM) therapy and the repair of brain damage after GBM ionizing radiation (IR).

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease. Here we describe the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a patient diagnosed as epilepsy caused by ATP1A2 gene mutation. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were developed using non-integrating episomal vectors containing OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, BCL-XL and C-MYC.

Epidemiological surveys show that the incidence of age-related dementia and cognitive impairment is increasing and it has been a heavy burden for society, families, and healthcare systems, making the preservation of cognitive function in an increasingly aging population a major challenge. Exercise is beneficial for brain health, and FDNC5/irisin, a new exercise-induced myokine, is thought to be a beneficial mediator to cognitive function and plays an important role in the crosstalk between skeletal muscle and brain. This review provides a critical assessment of the recent progress in both fundamental and clinical research of FDNC5/irisin in dementia and cognitive impairment-related disorders.

This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of eltrombopag plus diacerein vs eltrombopag alone in patients with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who were previously unresponsive to 14 days of eltrombopag treatment at the full dose. Recruited patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either eltrombopag plus diacerein (n = 50) or eltrombopag monotherapy (n = 52). Overall response rate, defined as a platelet count of ≥30 × 109/L, at least doubling of the baseline platelet count, and no bleeding, was reached in 44% of patients in the eltrombopag plus diacerein group compared with 13% in the eltrombopag group at day 15 (P = .

Background And Aims: The concept of textbook outcomes (TOs) has gained increased attention as a critical metric to assess the quality and success of outcomes following complex surgery. A simple yet effective scoring system was developed and validated to predict risk of not achieving textbook outcomes (non-TOs) following hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: Using a multicenter prospectively collected database, risk factors associated with non-TO among patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC were identified.

Visualizing the decision-making process is a key aspect of research regarding explainable arrhythmia recognition. This study proposed a visualized lead selection method to classify arrhythmia for multi-lead ECG signals. The proposed method has several advantages, as it uses a visualized approach to select effective leads, avoiding redundant leads and invalid information.

Background: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a rare inherited cystic disease characterized by bilateral renal cyst formation and congenital liver fibrosis. Cardiovascular disorders such as noncompaction of ventricular myocardium (NVM) have not been reported with ARPKD.
Case Presentation: A 5-month-old girl was examined after presenting with a fever and turbid urine for one day and was diagnosed as urinary tract infection.

Objective: Obesity increases deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components of cardiac tissue. Since obesity aggregates with insulin resistance and heart disease, it is imperative to determine whether the increased ECM deposition contributes to this disease cluster. The hypotheses tested in this study were that in cardiac tissue of obese mice i) increased deposition of ECM components (collagens and hyaluronan) contributes to cardiac insulin resistance and that a reduction in these components improves cardiac insulin action and ii) reducing excess collagens and hyaluronan mitigates obesity-associated cardiac dysfunction.
