JCO Glob Oncol

January 2025

Servicio de Oncología, Centro Universitario Contra el Cáncer (CUCC), Hospital Universitario "Dr. José Eleuterio González," Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Monterrey, México.

Purpose: Hereditary cancer syndromes (HCS) explain 5%-10% of all cancer cases. Patients with more than one germline pathogenic variant (GPV) result in a clinical syndrome known as multilocus inherited neoplasia allele syndrome (MINAS). In recent years, an increasing number of MINAS cases have been reported.

Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the General Movement checklist.

Acta Neurol Belg

December 2024

Servicio de Medicina Genómica, Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación "Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra", Ciudad de México, México.

Background: The Prechtl's General Movement Assessment (GMA) is a widely accepted tool for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants. However, access to formal training in GMA is limited in low- and middle-income countries, such as Mexico. This study aimed to validate the Spanish version of the General Movement checklist (GMC), a tool designed to facilitate the evaluation of general movements, particularly for clinicians with limited experience.

Objective: There is an ongoing debate regarding the optimal treatment for craniosynostosis as diverse factors influence the election between endoscopic and open surgery. Previous evidence favors endoscopic procedures. However, evidence remains unfulfilled by a limited number of patients and clustered in very few centers worldwide making it difficult to define it as a replicable technique in different populations.

Article Synopsis
  • Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) can be classified into Type A (pharmacokinetics-related) and Type B (immune response-related), with Type B reactions being less well-defined and often categorized into immediate and delayed types.
  • This review aims to explore the immunological mechanisms behind delayed hypersensitivity reactions to medications, highlighting their complexities.
  • Findings discuss the classification, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment plans, and overall prognosis of delayed hypersensitivity, emphasizing the need for prompt, tailored approaches by healthcare professionals.

Trigeminal neuralgia is usually associated with vascular compression of the nerve entry zone. However, a dolichoectatic basilar artery represents the cause in only up to 3% of cases. This is characterized by dilation, elongation, or tortuosity of the vertebrobasilar arteries.

Introduction: Since the COVID-19 outbreak escalated to pandemic levels, numerous hospitals deferred elective interventions. Studies reporting the incidence, presentation, severity, and outcomes in the surgical management of biliary diseases differ before, during and after the pandemic.

Objective: Evaluate the presentation of biliary pathology by diagnosis and Parkland Grading Scale in patients whose surgeries were postponed due to the pandemic, and who were later surgically intervened.

Background: Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) is a rare disease with significant morbidity. Its propensity for posterior circulation and relationship with aneurysms is poorly understood. Here, we aimed to describe the anatomical characteristics of the vertebral arteries (VA) in patients with VBD.

Screening Adherence for Second Primary Malignancies in Breast Cancer Survivors: Behaviors, Facilitators, and Barriers to Enhance Quality Care.

Semin Oncol

December 2024

Breast Cancer Center, Hospital Zambrano Hellion TecSalud, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico; Médicos e Investigadores en la Lucha contra el Cáncer de Mama, Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Due to genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, alongside increased life expectancy, breast cancer (BC) survivors have an increased risk of developing a second primary malignancy. Therefore, regular screening for other types of cancer is of utmost importance for their comprehensive care. This cross-sectional study evaluated BC survivors' compliance with cervical, lung, and colorectal cancer screening, and identified facilitators and barriers influencing adherence.

Introduction: The needs of family caregivers providing care to relatives with visual impairment are often dismissed, leading to caregiver burden. The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) can measure the caregiver burden of caring for a family member with vision impairment. The purpose of this study is to validate the ZBI in Mexican family caregivers of patients with visual impairment.

Purpose: Women with pathogenic variants (PVs) in breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) associated genes are candidates for cancer risk-reducing strategies. Limited information is available regarding risk-reducing surgeries (RRS) among Hispanics. The aim of this study was to describe the uptake of RRS in an international real-world experience of Hispanic women referred for genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA) and to identify factors affecting uptake.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperphosphatemia is common in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and can lead to poor health outcomes; researchers explored whether weekly creatinine clearance (CrCl) is a better indicator of serum phosphate levels compared to urea clearance.
  • A study analyzed data from 16,796 PD patients across several institutions in North and South America, adjusting for various factors like age and gender, to determine the relationship between serum phosphate levels and both CrCl and urea Kt/V.
  • The findings indicated that while CrCl did not outperform urea Kt/V in predicting serum phosphate levels, incorporating CrCl into predictive models improved their overall accuracy, suggesting its importance in managing phosphate levels in PD patients.

The distinction between noncancerous and cancerous breast tissues is challenging in clinical settings, and discovering new proteomics-based biomarkers remains underexplored. Through a pilot proteomic study (discovery cohort), we aimed to identify a protein signature indicative of breast cancer for subsequent validation using six published proteomics/transcriptomics data sets (validation cohorts). Sequential window acquisition of all theoretical (SWATH)-based mass spectrometry revealed 370 differentially abundant proteins between noncancerous tissue and breast cancer.

Characteristics and clinical outcomes of breast cancer in young BRCA carriers according to tumor histology.

ESMO Open

October 2024

Medical Oncology Department, U.O.C. Clinica di Oncologia Medica, IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genoa; Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (DIMI), School of Medicine, University of Genova, Genoa.

Article Synopsis
  • Young women with breast cancer have a higher likelihood of carrying harmful BRCA gene variants, but data on tumor histology's prognostic value is limited.
  • A study involving 4,628 patients revealed that lobular tumors are generally diagnosed at a later stage and are more often linked to BRCA2 mutations, while ductal tumors are frequently associated with BRCA1 mutations.
  • Despite differences in tumor characteristics and treatment approaches, the study found no significant differences in disease-free or overall survival between those with ductal and lobular tumors, indicating that histology may not influence prognosis.

Introduction: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the gold-standard treatment for large renal stones. One potentially significant complication of PCNL is blood loss, which can result in transfusion requirement and poorer stone-free outcomes. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has emerged as a promising intervention, administered systemically (TXA-S) or as part of irrigation fluid (TXA-I) in endourology.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review on transition programs from pediatric to adult care and the role of neurosurgery as individuals with spina bifida (SB) transition, and to provide a framework for neurosurgical providers to assist in the transition to adult-centered care.

Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement, with a search in Medline and Embase to identify US clinical programs reporting on their experiences establishing a transition program for adolescents and young adults with SB. Data were collected for authors, year, transition clinic location, model of care for transition clinic, ages served, and specialty clinical team.
