Background: Online cancer forums (OCF) are increasingly popular platforms for patients and caregivers to discuss, seek information on, and share opinions about diseases and treatments. This interaction generates a substantial amount of unstructured text data, necessitating deeper exploration. Using time series data, our study exploits topic modeling in the novel domain of online cancer forums (OCFs) to identify meaningful topics and changing dynamics of online discussion across different lung cancer treatment intent groups.

A Contemporary Review of the Use of Extracorporeal CytoSorb Hemoadsorption Therapy in Patients with Infective Endocarditis.

J Clin Med

January 2024

Department of Nephrology, Kidney Research Institute, Frontiers Science Center for Disease-Related Molecular Network, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but severe disease with high morbidity and mortality. Cardiac surgery plays a major role in the contemporary clinical management of IE patients. During cardiac surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass significantly contributes to an increased risk of organ dysfunction and mortality by inducing an acute inflammatory response, vascular endothelial cell injury, impairment of the coagulation cascade, and ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Reinsertion of tunneled-cuffed catheter in hemodialysis patients with catheter loss and limited access options.

J Vasc Access

January 2024

Department of Nephrology, West China Hospital/West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Purpose: Maintenance hemodialysis patients who rely on tunneled-cuffed catheters (TCCs) often face difficulty in reinserting a new catheter when the original catheter has been extruded or removed. Potential pathological changes of vessel caused by long-term indwelling of a catheter may contribute to this predicament. The aim of this study was to report and evaluate a re-catheterization technique through the same exit site and tunnel for hemodialysis patients with TCC loss.

A high-throughput droplet digital PCR system aiming eight DNA methylation targets for age prediction.

J Pharm Biomed Anal

March 2024

Department of Forensic Genetics, West China School of Basic Medical Sciences & Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China. Electronic address:

The droplet digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (ddPCR) has garnered recognition for its distinctive attribute of absolute quantification. And it has found practical utility in age prediction through DNA methylation profiles. However, a prevalent limitation in current ddPCR methodologies is the restricted capacity to detect only two targets concurrently in most instruments, leading to high costs, sample wastage, and labor-intensive procedures.

Advanced Mass Spectrometry Center, Research Core Facility, Frontiers Science Center for Disease-related Molecular Network, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610213, China.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) has emerged as a revolutionary analytical strategy in biomedical research for molecular visualization. By linking the characterization of functional metabolites with tissue architecture, it is now possible to reveal unknown biological functions of tissues. However, due to the complexity and high dimensionality of MSI data, mining bioinformatics-related peaks from batch MSI data sets and achieving complete spatially resolved metabolomics analysis remain a great challenge.

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection caused by which commonly presents as an asymptomatic infection in immunocompetent patients but may cause non-specific gastrointestinal and pulmonary complaints. Here, we report the atypical presentation of strongyloidiasis in a 72-year-old Vietnamese male with shortness of breath and flushing. This case is notable for the unique presentation of cutaneous flushing, the absence of eosinophilia, and negligible microscopic findings on stool examination.

Department of Science and Technology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the cost-effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for treating non-small cell lung cancer, reviewing data from multiple global studies.
  • The findings identified several ICIs, such as pembrolizumab and nivolumab, but indicated that many combinations lacked cost-effectiveness in both China and the US, while alternatives like cemiplimab showed better value.
  • Overall, atezolizumab combinations were deemed not cost-effective, while camrelizumab, tislelizumab, and sintilimab were found to have lower cost-effectiveness ratios in China compared to others like pembrolizumab and nivolumab.
