Prognostic value of bioelectrical impedance analysis in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy: a VALOR® study.

Introduction: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) serves as a method to estimate body composition. Parameters such as phase angle (PA), standardized phase angle (SPA), body mass cell (BCM), BCM index (BCMI), and fat-free mass (FFM) might significantly impact the prognosis of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. The present study aimed to investigate whether bioelectrical parameters can be used to predict survival in the HNC population and establish the optimal cutoff points for predictive accuracy.

Leaf Supplementation as a Glycemic Control Strategy in Subjects with Prediabetes.

(MO) is a multipurpose plant with a high polyphenol content, which is being increasingly consumed to lessen the risk of chronic metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes; however, scientific evidence from clinical trials is scarce. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group intervention study with MO leaves as a food supplement was conducted in subjects with prediabetes. They consumed six daily capsules of MO dry leaf powder (2400 mg/day) (MO, = 31) or placebo (PLC, = 34) over 12 weeks.

Outcomes of Isolated Tricuspid Valve Surgery.

Background: Isolated tricuspid valve surgery is a rarely performed procedure and traditionally is associated with a bad prognosis, although its clinical outcomes still are little known. The aim of this study was to assess the short- and long-term clinical outcomes obtained at our center after isolated tricuspid valve surgery as treatment for severe tricuspid regurgitation.

Methods: This retrospective study included 71 consecutive patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation who underwent isolated tricuspid valve surgery between December 1996 and December 2017.

The STARMEN trial indicates that alternating treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide is superior to sequential treatment with tacrolimus and rituximab in primary membranous nephropathy.

A cyclical corticosteroid-cyclophosphamide regimen is recommended for patients with primary membranous nephropathy at high risk of progression. We hypothesized that sequential therapy with tacrolimus and rituximab is superior to cyclical alternating treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide in inducing persistent remission in these patients. This was tested in a randomized, open-label controlled trial of 86 patients with primary membranous nephropathy and persistent nephrotic syndrome after six-months observation and assigned 43 each to receive six-month cyclical treatment with corticosteroid and cyclophosphamide or sequential treatment with tacrolimus (full-dose for six months and tapering for another three months) and rituximab (one gram at month six).

Effectiveness of an oral diabetes-specific supplement on nutritional status, metabolic control, quality or life, and functional status in elderly patients. A multicentre study.

Background & Aims: The purpose of this study was to assess nutritional status, quality of life (QoL) and function in malnourished or at risk for malnutrition community-dwelling (CD) and nursing home-dwelling (NHD) elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), receiving treatment with a diabetes-specific oral nutritional supplement (DSONS).

Methods: A prospective, multicentre, observational study was conducted. A DSONS (high-calorie, high-protein, with slow-digestible carbohydrate and high monounsaturated fatty acid - MUFA-content - Glucerna 1.

[Recommendations of the GARIN group for dietary managing of patient with chronic kidney disease].

Background and objectives: by means of this update, the GARIN working group aims to define its position regarding the dietary treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this area there are many aspects of uncertainty. Material and methods: bibliographical review and specific questions in advance were discussed and answered at a meeting in the form of conclusions.

Phase 2 Randomized Study of Radiation Therapy and 3-Year Androgen Deprivation With or Without Concurrent Weekly Docetaxel in High-Risk Localized Prostate Cancer Patients.

Purpose: Docetaxel improves survival in patients with metastatic prostate cancer. This randomized phase 2 trial aimed to assess the activity of weekly docetaxel with radiation therapy (RT) plus androgen deprivation in patients with high-risk localized prostate cancer. The study examined the benefit of 9 weekly docetaxel administrations to RT plus 3 years of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues.

RENACER study: Assessment of 12-month efficacy and safety of 168 certolizumab PEGol rheumatoid arthritis-treated patients from a Spanish multicenter national database.

Objective: To assess effectiveness and safety of certolizumab PEGol (CZP) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients after 12 months of treatment and to detect predictors of response.

Methods: Observational longitudinal prospective study of RA patients from 35 sites in Spain. Variables (baseline, 3- and 12-month assessment): sociodemographics, previous Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug (DMARD) and previous Biological Therapies (BT) use; TJC, SJC, ESR, CRP, DAS28, SDAI.

Preoperative and perioperative use of levosimendan in cardiac surgery: European expert opinion.

In cardiac surgery, postoperative low cardiac output has been shown to correlate with increased rates of organ failure and mortality. Catecholamines have been the standard therapy for many years, although they carry substantial risk for adverse cardiac and systemic effects, and have been reported to be associated with increased mortality. On the other hand, the calcium sensitiser and potassium channel opener levosimendan has been shown to improve cardiac function with no imbalance in oxygen consumption, and to have protective effects in other organs.

Relationship between paravascular abnormalities and foveoschisis in highly myopic patients.

Purpose: To describe the prevalence of paravascular abnormalities in highly myopic patients and its relationship with myopic foveoschisis (MF).

Methods: Cross-sectional study of 250 highly myopic eyes. All of the patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination that included optical coherence tomography .

Effect of apolipoprotein C3 and apolipoprotein A1 polymorphisms on postprandial response to a fat overload in metabolic syndrome patients.

Objectives: Apolipoprotein C-III (APOC3) is a component of triglyceride rich lipoproteins, and SstI polymorphism has been associated with hypertriglyceridemia. Apolipoprotein A-I (APOA1) is the major component of HDL and MspI polymorphism has been associated with APOA1 and HDL-C levels. Thus, we study the influence of these polymorphisms in the postprandial response in metabolic syndrome (MS).
