Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common non-melanoma type of skin cancer described in humans that originates in the epidermis, more specifically in the basal layer and its appendages. Environmental, genetic and phenotypic factors contribute to the onset of this cancer; however, damage caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is the primary risk factor. The emergence of this neoplasm in unexposed body areas, such as the soles, groin, armpit, scrotum or vulva is very rare.

Article Synopsis
  • Adrenal tuberculosis is a leading cause of primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) in regions where tuberculosis (TB) is common, as highlighted in a case report that used CT imaging for diagnosis.
  • A 37-year-old woman from Peru, who had been exposed to TB, showed signs of adrenal insufficiency; CT scans revealed enlarged adrenals with calcifications, leading to a diagnosis of adrenal TB.
  • Despite treatment with prednisone and anti-TB medication resulting in symptom relief, she later died from pneumonia, emphasizing the need for awareness of adrenal TB in TB-endemic areas and the role of CT in diagnosis when biopsies are not possible.

Autoimmune encephalitis is an infrequent pathological occurrence documented within our local context. When clinical suspicion arises, employing electroencephalogram and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) proves valuable. However, for conclusive diagnosis confirmation, lumbar puncture for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is indispensable.

Anorectal melanoma is a rare and difficult-to-diagnose highly malignant cancer with a poor prognosis. The treatment usually involves surgery and often includes adjuvants such as radiation therapy and immunotherapy. We present a case of a 77-year-old Peruvian who was eventually diagnosed with this cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicated her treatment and allowed the cancer to spread.

Background: Central line (CL)-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common and associated with a high burden.

Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach, incorporating an 11-element bundle, education, surveillance of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, monitoring compliance with bundle components, feedback of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, and performance feedback in 316 ICUs across 30 low- and middle-income countries. Our dependent variables were CLABSI per 1,000-CL-days and in-ICU all-cause mortality rates.

Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common, costly, and potentially lethal.

Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach and an 8-component bundle in 374 ICUs across 35 low and middle-income countries (LMICs) from Latin-America, Asia, Eastern-Europe, and the Middle-East, to reduce VAP rates in ICUs. The VAP rate per 1000 mechanical ventilator (MV)-days was measured at baseline and during intervention at the 2nd month, 3rd month, 4-15 month, 16-27 month, and 28-39 month periods.
