Introduction: In breast cancer surgery, there are techniques for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) that do not require Nuclear Medicine, such SentiMag®, which uses ferromagnetic particles. The main purpose of this analysis is to study the degree of concordance in SLNB between SentiMag® and the standard method (Tc99 radiotracer). The secondary objective is to identify factors that impact in sentinel node detection rate and matching detection rate between both probes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the use of Direct Oral Drug Provocation Test (DODPT) to safely assess beta-lactam antibiotic (BLA) allergies in children, revealing that over 90% of suspected cases could be ruled out effectively.
  • - It involved 2,133 young patients across 15 hospitals in Spain, noting that most had mild reactions; only a handful experienced severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis, which resolved quickly with treatment.
  • - The results suggest that DODPT is a reliable method for confirming or denying BLA allergies, making it a practical option for doctors in pediatric care to help "delabel" unnecessary allergies.

Objective: The prevalence of osteoporosis (OP) and insufficiency fractures in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) remains controversial. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of OP and insufficiency fractures in a representative cohort of patients with PsA, and to analyse its association with general risk factors and characteristics of the psoriatic disease in our geographical area.

Methods: Multi-centric, descriptive study of patients with PsA.

(1) Scant information is available concerning the characteristics that may favour the acquisition of COVID-19 in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess these differences between infected and noninfected patients with IBD. (2) This nationwide case−control study evaluated patients with inflammatory bowel disease with COVID-19 (cases) and without COVID-19 (controls) during the period March−July 2020 included in the ENEIDA of GETECCU.

Lewis-Sumner syndrome: contribution of diffusion tensor imaging in its differential diagnosis.

Skeletal Radiol

June 2023

Magnetic Resonance Department, Inscanner SL, C/San Pedro Poveda, 10. 03010, Alicante, Spain.

Lewis-Sumner syndrome (LSS) is an atypical variant of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy characterized by an asymmetric sensory-motor neuropathy with multifocal distribution. The diagnosis is typically clinical and electrophysiological but in some cases might be challenging causing a significant therapeutic delay. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been progressively used for the in vivo assessment of peripheral nerves integrity.

We aim to describe the incidence and source of contagion of COVID-19 in patients with IBD, as well as the risk factors for a severe course and long-term sequelae. This is a prospective observational study of IBD and COVID-19 included in the ENEIDA registry (53,682 from 73 centres) between March-July 2020 followed-up for 12 months. Results were compared with data of the general population (National Centre of Epidemiology and Catalonia).

Article Synopsis
  • Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is prevalent in Latin America and poses a global risk due to migration, with many asymptomatic carriers unknowingly infected.
  • A study assessed Chagas disease prevalence and knowledge among Latin American migrants in community screenings in Alicante, Spain, during 2016-2018, using blood tests and questionnaires.
  • The results showed an 11% prevalence among adults, particularly in Bolivian migrants, with educational efforts linked to better disease knowledge, especially among those receiving information in Spain and having a primary education level.

Objective: To assess the epidemiology and outcome at discharge of cancer patients requiring admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Design: A descriptive observational study was made of data from the ENVIN-HELICS registry, combined with specifically compiled variables. Comparisons were made between patients with and without neoplastic disease, and groups of cancer patients with a poorer outcome were identified.

Budget impact of ferric carboxymaltose treatment in patients with chronic heart failure and iron deficiency in Spain.

J Med Econ

December 2020

Community Heart Failure Program, Department of Cardiology, Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Objective: The treatment of iron deficiency (ID) with ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) improves the functional class and quality of life of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and reduces the rate of hospitalization due to worsening CHF. This study aims to evaluate the budget impact for the Spanish National Health System (SNHS) of treating ID in reduced LVEF CHF with FCM compared to non-iron treatment.

Methods: We simulated a hypothetical cohort of 1000 CHF patients with ID and reduced LVEF based on the Spanish population characteristics.

Introduction: Treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients with thrombocytopenia is challenging due to perceived higher risk of bleeding.

Material And Methods: We used the RIETE registry to compare the 10- and 30-day outcomes in cancer patients with acute VTE, according to platelet count at baseline.

Results: As of December 2018, 15,337 cancer patients with VTE were included: 166 (1.

Background: Detection of severe renal impairment in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) is mandatory both for selecting anticoagulant therapy and for evaluating major bleeding risk, increased by severe renal impairment.

Objectives: To determine whether the Cockcroft and Gault (CG) and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formulas identify severe renal impairment in the same VTE patients presenting the same risk of major bleeding.

Patients/methods: We compared clinical characteristics and outcomes during the first 3 months of anticoagulation between VTE patients in the RIETE registry with severe renal impairment according to the CG and/or CKD-EPI formula (estimated glomerular filtration rate <30 mL/min and <30 mL/min/1.

Amyloid goiter (AG) is characterized by the presence of deposits of amyloid protein in the thyroid tissue in sufficient amounts to produce enlargement of the gland, accompanied by fat deposition or thyrolipomatosis. It can be seen in long-standing inflammatory disorders, with the common characteristic of amyloidotic renal failure. In daily practice, practitioners should pay attention to the differential diagnosis in patients with suggestive co-morbidities for amyloidosis.
