Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections after cosmetic surgery have become an increasing concern. These infections are often initially misdiagnosed and treated with standard antibiotic regimens, which fail to resolve the underlying infection, leading to prolonged patient suffering. In this case study, we describe a chronic wound infection caused by subsp.

Introduction: Endoscopy plays a fundamental role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and becomes essential in diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and detection and management of complications.
Materials And Methods: The Pan American Crohn's and Colitis Organization (PANCCO) and the Inter-American Society of Endoscopy (SIED) appointed 22 Latin American experts in IBD to develop a consensus study using the modified Delphi method, based on the best available evidence. A working group of 22 members from 9 countries identified 15 topics and formulated 98 statements, who participated in 2 rounds of voting.

Background: Deep brain electromodulation (DBEM), also known as deep brain stimulation in different intracerebral targets, is the most widely used surgical treatment due to its effects in reducing motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The intracerebral microelectrode recording has been considered for decades as a necessary tool for the success of Parkinson's surgery. However, some publications give more importance to intracerebral stimulation as a better predictive test.

A lack of diversity in genomics for health continues to hinder equitable leadership and access to precision medicine approaches for underrepresented populations. To avoid perpetuating biases within the genomics workforce and genomic data collection practices, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) must be addressed. This paper documents the journey taken by the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (a genomics-based standard-setting and policy-framing organization) to create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for its standards and members.

Objectives: Sleep disturbances, including disrupted sleep and short sleep duration, are highly prevalent and are prospectively associated with an increased risk for various chronic diseases, including cardiometabolic, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune diseases.
Material And Methods: This is a narrative review of the literature based on numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals since the beginning of this century.
Results: The relationship between sleep disorders and metabolic dysregulation has been clearly established, mainly in the setting of modern epidemic of cardiometabolic disease, a cluster of conditions include obesity, insulin resistance, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidaemia, all of them considered as main risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) and its clinical expression such as ischemic ictus, myocardial infarction and type 2 diabetes.

Background: Several clinical studies have shown that cellular therapy based on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) transplantation may accelerate wound healing. One major challenge is the delivery system used for MSCs transplantation. In this work, we evaluated the capacity of a scaffold based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to maintain the viability and biological functions of MSCs, in vitro.

Importance: A clear dosing regimen for methotrexate in psoriasis is lacking, and this might lead to a suboptimal treatment. Because methotrexate is affordable and globally available, a uniform dosing regimen could potentially optimize the treatment of patients with psoriasis worldwide.
Objective: To reach international consensus among psoriasis experts on a uniform dosing regimen for treatment with methotrexate in adult and pediatric patients with psoriasis and identify potential future research topics.

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and incurable entity. The aim of the Pan American Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (PANCCO) is to create awareness of IBD, with special emphasis on Latin America, and the primary objective of the Spanish Working Group on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (GETECCU, the Spanish acronym) is to obtain the accreditation of the clinical and therapeutic criteria for the diagnosis and treatment of IBD.
Aim: To carry out a consensus for evaluating the approval criteria that a Comprehensive Care Clinic for Latin American IBD patients must meet, to be considered a center of excellence.

Background: The infection by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with multiple cutaneous manifestations, although characterization of them in Hispanic patients with darker skin phototypes is lacking. The objective of this study is to characterize the clinical dermatological manifestations associated with COVID-19 infection in cases with few or without general symptoms in patients from Latin America.
Methods: Cross-sectional study using a questionnaire that was made for health professionals (physicians with a specialty in dermatology) to investigate dermatological lesions associated with COVID-19 infection in patients from 25 countries of Latin America.

Platelet-rich plasma has become one of the most widely used facial cosmetics fillers. We evaluated four patients treated by cosmetologists with platelet-rich plasma injections who developed irreversible blindness due to iatrogenic occlusion of the ophthalmic artery; immediately after the injection in the glabellar area in three cases and in the nasolabial fold in one case. Early after the injections the fundi of all patients demonstrated central retinal artery and choroidal occlusions.

This paper describes how the BioDoseNet image repository was used as a training tool for the dicentric assay. The training was implemented in three phases: introduction to dicentric scoring, dose response curve elaboration and dose assessment exercise. Four labs without previous experience in the dicentric assay participated and four modules of the repository were used.

Background And Aims: Experience in the region shows that in some countries there is very good surveillance of Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in health services, but there is no national data consistently in all countries. Therefore, we set to estimate the total burden of HAIs and antimicrobial use in acute care hospitals in Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia using the one-day point prevalence methodology.
Methods: The survey was conducted between June and July 2016.

The Beijing family, the most successful lineage, is considered hypervirulent, associated with clustering and has a strong association with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The Beijing strains have spread worldwide and also to Latin America. Genotyping of a countrywide collection of 380 strains from Ecuador, with 24-loci mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units-variable number tandem repeats (MIRU-VNTR), revealed only six Beijing strains, but four of these were MDR-TB.

The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased in recent years in several Latin American countries. There is a need to raise awareness in gastroenterologists and the population in general, so that early diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease (CD) can be carried out. It is important for all physicians to have homogeneous criteria regarding the diagnosis and treatment of IBD in Latin America.

Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients. The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance.

Increasing prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii strains in the nosocomial setting in Latin America represents an emerging challenge to public health, as the range of therapeutic agents active against these pathogens becomes increasingly constrained. We review published reports from 2002 to 2013, compiling data from throughout the region on prevalence, mechanisms of resistance and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa and A.
