Article Synopsis
  • POEMS syndrome is a rare condition caused by problems in plasma cells and has five main features: nerve issues, organ enlargement, hormone problems, a specific type of protein in the blood, and skin changes.
  • In a study that included 46 patients from Latin America, researchers found that all had nerve problems, and many had skin changes and organ enlargement, with a median time of 7.7 months to get diagnosed.
  • The survival rate for patients was really good, with all patients who had a transplant still alive, suggesting that treatment in Latin America is effective and similar to other parts of the world.

Background: Atraumatic full thickness rotator cuff tears (AFTRCT) are common lesions whose incidence increases with age. Physical therapy is an effective conservative treatment in these patients with a reported success rate near 85% within 12 weeks of treatment. The critical shoulder angle (CSA) is a radiographic metric that relates the glenoid inclination with the lateral extension of the acromion in the coronal plane.

Background: Current reports applying ESPGHAN exception criteria (EEC) to diagnose celiac disease (CD) without duodenal biopsies indicate that a high percentage of patients with CD may be identified when applied correctly in specialized settings. Application of the EEC, however, in "daily life conditions" at the different levels of medical services is not clear.

Methods: EEC was applied to 130 pediatric patients evaluated for CD at 5 public hospitals in Santiago, Chile, during 2010 to 2015.

Objective: The purpose of this work is to present our endoscopic neuroanatomical findings of a series of myelomeningocele and hydrocephalus patients, treated with endoscopic third ventricular cisternostomy (ETVC), in order to describe ventricular configuration abnormalities in this group of patients, in which this neurosurgical procedure has limited performance.

Method: We checked the videos of 10 endoscopic third ventricular cisternostomies of myelomeningocele patients taken during 24 months as from December 1998. A previous guideline is designed to record anatomic variables in the lateral ventricles, IIIrd ventricle, and basal cisterns.

Background: Propionic aciduria (PA) and Methymalonic aciduria (MMA) result from an inherited abnormality of the enzymes propionyl CoA carboxylase and methylmalonyl CoA mutase respectively. This produces marked increases in the amino acids methionine, threonine, valine and isoleucine (MTVI). Their clinical presentation can be neonatal or late onset forms.
