Objective: Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) may be at a higher risk of a fatal outcome in case of COVID-19. Current risk stratification among these patients relies on personal experience and extrapolation from patients with acquired heart disease. We aimed to provide an expert view on risk stratification while awaiting results from observational studies.

Radiol Case Rep

January 2021

Section of Neuroradiology, Department of Radiology, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Passeig de la Vall d'Hebron, 119-129 | 08035, Barcelona, Spain.

Spinal cord glioblastoma is a rare disease, with an aggressive course and a poor prognosis. We describe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, in 3 adult cases of biopsy-confirmed glioblastoma. Conventional MRI findings were unclear with regard to the differential diagnosis between this rare tumor and other more common spinal cord lesions, including less aggressive tumors such as ependymoma or pilocytic astrocytoma, abscesses or tumefactive demyelinating lesions.

Current literature and clinical guidelines do not include pregnant women as an a priori risk group for COVID-19. However, a gender vision of health begs the question: Why are pregnant women not considered a risk group for COVID-19? The answer is clear: historically, most community scientific studies have not considered female gender, or pregnancy as a state, to be a focus of special interest or effort. Unfortunately, this bias seems to be maintained in the COVID-19 epidemic: most current guidelines for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy apply the same standard criteria as for the general population.

Online patient registries are used to collect data on clinical conditions with rare occurrence or unclear diagnostic and management practices. The success of these registries depends on clear definition of goals, correct identification of patient population/inclusion criteria, availability of appropriate setup and maintenance tools, and the quality of dissemination. The Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) for Women's Health Issues in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, one of 20 committees of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has developed 6 registries for women's bleeding and thrombotic conditions over the past 2 years and are currently in various stages of progress.

Background: Prophylaxis reduces the frequency of bleeds in boys with severe hemophilia and is the standard care for their management in resource-abundant countries. The effect of prophylaxis on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) has not been established, because the sample sizes of most studies are too small to explore the relationship of multiple factors that influence HRQoL.

Methods: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of hemophilia severity and treatment regimen on HRQoL and to establish the minimum important difference (MID) using the international level of score distributions.

Outcome of kidney transplantation from young pediatric donors (aged less than 6 years) to young size-matched recipients.

J Pediatr Urol

May 2019

Department of Pediatric Nephrology, University Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Passeig de la Vall d'Hebrón 119-129, 08035, Barcelona, Spain; School of Medicine, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Passeig de la Vall d'Hebrón 119-129, 08035, Barcelona, Spain.

Introduction: Pediatric donation is underutilized because of presumed increased risk of vascular thrombosis (VT) and graft loss. Using young pediatric donors (YPDs) for young pediatric recipients (YPRs) is suggested to be even at greater risk and therefore precluded in many centers. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of kidney transplantation (KT) from YPD to age-matched YPR.

We report clinico-pathological features of a 65-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man with a 5-year clinical history who had clinical and neuropathological characteristics of upper and lower motor neuron disease consistent with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and a frontotemporal atrophy pattern in case 2 without TDP-43 pathology. Instead, spongiform change and pathological prion protein deposits were observed in several brain regions. No prion protein gene mutations were found.

Myc is an oncogene deregulated in most-perhaps all-human cancers. Each Myc family member, c-, L-, and N-Myc, has been connected to tumor progression and maintenance. Myc is recognized as a "most wanted" target for cancer therapy, but has for many years been considered undruggable, mainly due to its nuclear localization, lack of a defined ligand binding site, and physiological function essential to the maintenance of normal tissues.
