Background: Blood pressure control has a pivotal role in reducing the incidence and recurrence of stroke. May Measurement Month (MMM), which was initiated in 2017 by the International Society of Hypertension, is the largest global blood pressure screening campaign. We aim to compare MMM participants with and without a previous history of stroke and to investigate associations between national-level estimates of blood pressure management from MMM and premature stroke mortality.

Background: Despite the growing concerns related to the potential of long-term pulmonary sequelae due to COVID-19, data about intermediate and long-term changes in the respiratory function of patients who recover is relatively sparse, particularly in developing countries.
Objectives: To assess the characteristics and pulmonary function at follow-up in a sample of Ecuadorian patients that recovered from the virus.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study that included 43 patients after symptomatic COVID infection, who were evaluated by spirometry, single breath DLCO, and 6MWT.
We have studied an unvaccinated heart transplant 64-year-old patient admitted for low-grade fever, dry cough, general malaise, and bilateral interstitial infiltrates, after two months of a diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) bilateral pneumonia. A bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial biopsy were performed. Bacterial, mycotic and viral infections were ruled out including repeated reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Direct oral anticoagulants have emerged as the drugs that have changed the management of the antithrombotic treatment in the last 15 years. Their advantages, like a more friendly way of anticoagulation and their lower risk of bleeding, especially in the brain, have positioned these new anticoagulants as the first drug of choice in the two most frequent indications of anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation, and the venous thromboembolic disease. However, not all the patients can receive these agents, not all the direct oral anticoagulants have the same characteristics, and most importantly, not all the diseases with an indication of an anticoagulant drug can be treated with them.

Background: Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is the most common cause of severe and persistent hypoglycemia in neonates and children. It is a heterogeneous condition with dysregulated insulin secretion, which persists in the presence of low blood glucose levels.
Case Presentation: We report a case of a 15 year-old male with hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia, who underwent a subtotal pancreatectomy after inadequate response to medical therapy.

Purpose: The expression "learning curve" indicates the relation between the time needed to learn a new technique and the technique-related outcome. Percutaneous surgery (also called "minimally invasive surgery") has experienced sustained and respectable growth, especially in forefoot deformities. The main purpose was to assess the number of feet necessary to become skilled in a specific minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedure.

Purpose Of Review: Intestinal failure (IF) evolved from being the last recognized organ failure, to become one of the most progressive fields in terms of therapeutic alternatives and results. Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the main cause of IF in adults and children. The use of surgery allowed patients with unfavorable anatomy type and length to be wean off parenteral nutrition.

Background: The hemodynamic maintenance of brain-dead donors will influence the quality of the organs procured for transplantation, including the intestine. Although norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) are commonly used to sustain mean arterial pressure in humans, there are no standardized protocols for their use during maintenance of brain-dead donors. Our aim was to compare the effects of each drug, in the intestinal graft quality using a rat brain-dead donation model.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) has a high mortality rate and often requires advanced therapies such as mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and heart transplantation (HT). Those patients who presented an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with CS and required support through MCS as bridge to HT were retrospectively analyzed in a single Center. Between January 1997 and June 2020, 524 patients received HT, 203 for ischemic-cardiomyopathy, 103 were in emergency waiting list.

Background And Aims: The case-mix of patients with intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF) can differ among centres and may also be affected by the timeframe of data collection. Therefore, the ESPEN international multicenter cross-sectional survey was analyzed to compare the characteristics of SBS-IF cohorts collected within the same timeframe in different countries.
Methods: The study included 1880 adult SBS-IF patients collected in 2015 by 65 centres from 22 countries.

Background: Deregulation of immune response and oxidative stress contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) pathogenesis. Resistin is a physiological modulator of inflammation and redox homeostasis of different cell types. Increased resistin serum concentration and the direct association between resistin hepatic expression and NAFLD severity suggest that resistin participates in NAFLD pathogenesis.

Introduction: Macrophages are capable of extreme plasticity and their activation state has been strongly associated with solid tumor growth progression and regression. Although the macrophage response to extracellular matrix (ECM) isolated from normal tissue is reasonably well understood, there is a relative dearth of information regarding their response to ECM isolated from chronically inflamed tissues, pre-neoplastic tissues, and neoplastic tissues. Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is a type of neoplasia driven by chronic inflammation in the distal esophagus, and the length of the esophagus provides the opportunity to investigate macrophage behavior in the presence of ECM isolated from a range of disease states within the same organ.
