Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the ABC-SPH score's ability to predict invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) needs in COVID-19 patients and compare it to other existing predictive scores.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis involving 9,350 adult COVID-19 patients across 32 hospitals in Brazil, focusing on data from 2020 to 2022 to assess and recalibrate the ABC-SPH score.
  • Results showed that the ABC-SPH score outperformed other scores like CURB-65 and STSS in predicting IMV, particularly in patients under 80, and recalibration efforts significantly improved its prediction accuracy.

Background: Despite no evidence showing benefits of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine with or without azithromycin for COVID-19 treatment, these medications have been largely prescribed in Brazil.

Objectives: To assess outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, electrocardiographic abnormalities, hospital length-of-stay, admission to the intensive care unit, and need for dialysis and mechanical ventilation, in hospitalized COVID-19 patients who received chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, and to compare outcomes between those patients and their matched controls.

Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study that included consecutive laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients from 37 Brazilian hospitals from March to September 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on global public health, with long-term consequences that are still largely unknown. This study aimed to assess the data regarding acute cardiovascular hospital admissions in five European centers before and during the pandemic. A multicenter, multinational observational registry was created, comparing admissions to the emergency departments during a 3-months period in 2020 (during the pandemic) with the corresponding period in 2019 (pre-pandemic).

Background: Acute kidney injury has been described as a common complication in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, which may lead to the need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in its most severe forms. Our group developed and validated the MMCD score in Brazilian COVID-19 patients to predict KRT, which showed excellent performance using data from 2020. This study aimed to validate the MMCD score in a large cohort of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in a different pandemic phase and assess its performance to predict in-hospital mortality.

August 2023

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Distúrbios da Comunicação Humana, Faculdade de Fonoaudiologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria - UFSM - Santa Maria (RS), Brasil.

Purpose: analyze the effects of hospitalization in the Kangaroo Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (UCINCa), the second stage of the Kangaroo Care (KC), on the development of oral feeding skills in preterm neonates.

Methods: an analytical observational study of the prospective longitudinal type, carried out in a public hospital in Southern Brazil, where infants were accompanied until hospital discharge. The sample consisted of 20 preterm neonates hospitalized at the UCINCa and 26 preterm neonates at the Conventional Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (UCINCo), that were periodically evaluated through the levels of oral skill, in a bottle, according to the criteria of proficiency and milk transfer rate.

Background: Antibiotic prophylaxis in bicuspid aortic valve patients is currently a matter of debate. Although it is no longer recommended by international guidelines, some studies indicate a high risk of infective endocarditis. We aim to evaluate the risk of native valve infective endocarditis in bicuspid aortic valve patients and compare to individuals with tricuspid aortic valve.

Oral anticoagulation significantly reduces the incidence of dementia in atrial fibrillation patients. However, this protective effect has not been compared between Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOAC) and Vitamin K antagonists' anticoagulants (VKA). We conducted an electronic search for potentially eligible studies through the bibliographic databases MEDLINE, CENTRAL, ClinicalTrials.

June 2023

Master in Health Science and Life Science, and Department of Nutrition, Universidade Franciscana, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background: Enteral nutrition (EN) assists in the nutritional status of hospitalised patients unable to feed orally. The aim of this study was to determine which method-continuous EN or discontinuous EN, a diet in which the infusion is discontinued for 4h during the night,-is more effective in meeting nutrient recommendations and improving glycaemic control and biochemical parameters related to protein anabolism.

Methods: Patients were divided into two groups: discontinuous (EN administered in mL/h, 18h/day, 4-h night fasting) and continuous (EN administered in mL/h, 22h/day).

Background: COVID-19 progression is associated with an increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis. Randomised trials have demonstrated that anticoagulants reduce the risk of thromboembolism in hospitalised patients with COVID-19, but a benefit of routine anticoagulation has not been demonstrated in the outpatient setting.

Methods: We conducted a randomised, open-label, controlled, multicentre study, evaluating the use of rivaroxaban in mild or moderate COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: Among the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development members, Portugal has the highest reported consumption of anxiolytics, hypnotics, and sedatives, of which a large proportion are benzodiazepines or related drugs. These are known to cause tolerance and dependence. Other drugs with hypnotic effect, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, or anticonvulsants have been identified by some reports as alternatives to benzodiazepines for the treatment of insomnia.
