Beyond secondary prevention drugs: Added benefit in survival and events of a healthy lifestyle in patients after an acute coronary syndrome.

Objective: To quantify the added clinical benefit of a healthy lifestyle following an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Our study seeks to answer the question: Is adherence to medical therapy sufficient or a healthy lifestyle provides additional improvement?.

Methods: This is a prospective observational multi-center study of 685 ACS patients.

Why are we not exploring the potential of lower limb muscle power to identify people with sarcopenia?

Sarcopenia refers to a neuromuscular disease characterized by age-related declines in muscle mass and function. Since Professor Rosenberg first introduced the concept of sarcopenia in 1989, numerous operational paradigms have been proposed, tested, and validated against negative outcomes. The most recent recommendations advocate that dynapenia, or reduced of muscle strength, should be used alongside low muscle mass for the identification of sarcopenia.

Intrarater and interrater reliability of the Clinical Frailty Scale-Es and FRAIL-Es in critically ill patients.

Objective: To evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of the Clinical Frailty Scale-Spain (CFS-España) and FRAIL-España and the internal consistency of the FRAIL-España when implemented in critically ill patients by intensive care nurses and physicians.

Background/objectives: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most concerning complications following gastrectomy. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the predictive accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), fibrinogen, and the mean platelet volume (MPV) in the early diagnosis of post-gastrectomy AL.

Methods: A prospective bicentric observational study was conducted including all patients undergoing elective gastrectomy between August 2018 and December 2022.

Background: Despite muscle power derived from the 5-rep sit-to-stand (STS) test having been demonstrated to be a valuable biomarker in older individuals, there is limited information regarding muscle power derived from the 30-s STS test, a widely used test in the clinical setting. This study aimed (i) to compare relative 30-s STS power values between older men and women, (ii) to identify cut-off points for low relative 30-s STS power, (iii) to compare the prevalence of low relative STS power between sexes and (iv) to evaluate the association of low relative 30-s STS power with adverse conditions in older people.

Angiogenic factors versus fetomaternal Doppler for fetal growth restriction at term: an open-label, randomized controlled trial.

Small fetuses, with estimated fetal weight (EFW) below the tenth percentile, are classified as fetal growth restriction (FGR) or small for gestational age (SGA) based on prenatal ultrasound. FGR fetuses have a greater risk of stillbirth and perinatal complications and may benefit from serial ultrasound scans to guide early delivery. Abnormal serum angiogenic factors, such as the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1):placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, have shown potential to more accurately distinguish FGR from SGA, with fewer false positives.

Avatrombopag in adults with immune thrombocytopenia: A multicentre real-life observational study in Madrid, Spain (AVAMAD study).

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare acquired disorder where thrombopoietin-receptor agonists have become mainstays of ITP treatment. With the recent approval of avatrombopag (AVA), real-world studies are essential to evaluate its efficacy and safety. Our study of 66 adult ITP patients treated with AVA showed a high response rate.

Evaluation of Zhuhai DL Biotech's BT24 automated blood culture system.

Introduction: For the microbiological diagnosis of bacteremia and fungemia, it is essential to use automated blood culture systems that guarantee good performance in the detection of microorganisms. We evaluated the BT24 system for blood cultures by comparing it with the BACTEC™ FX system in detection of positive spiked blood cultures (BC) and bottles, subsequent growth of the microorganism, and time to detection (TTD).

Methods: The parallel analysis of both systems was performed with 160 strains of 31 different species, each inoculated under the same conditions and simultaneously in six blood culture bottles.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Follow-up of Children and Adolescents With HIV Infection in Guatemala.

We conducted a retrospective study to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on children living with HIV in Guatemala. A reduction in physical consultations and laboratory tests was observed in prepandemic versus pandemic period. However, immunovirological status of the children showed no differences.

Objective: Escherichia coli is isolated in most of uncomplicated community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI) and fosfomycin is one of the treatments of choice. We analyzed the evolution of fosfomycin resistance in extrahospitalary E. coli urinary isolates and whether age and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production were associated to antibiotic resistance.

Methods: Retrospective, multi-national, and multicenter studies, including four observational cohort studies, were carried out in 1998, 2004, 2010, and 2016 for the VENTILAGROUP following the same methodology.
